TL;DR: It is confirmed that the winner of the 4 Large White x Landrace competition will be from the Isle of Wight.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the UHI in a small size town in northwestern Greece for four years (2011-2014), by analyzing hourly air temperatures and meteorological data in one urban-traffic and one rural station.
Abstract: The rapid urbanization in the recent decades modified negatively the urban environments. The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon which came as a consequence to this urbanization and has damaging effects in several areas, the ecological, socio-ecological, economical and climatical included. This study investigates the UHI in a small size town in northwestern Greece for four years (2011–2014), by analyzing hourly air temperatures and meteorological data in one urban-traffic and one rural station. Furthermore, the study investigates the dependence of the UHI to the basic atmospheric forcings and comperes the findings with the measured results from other works in Greece. It is worth mentioning from the inter-comparison that despite the fact that Kozani is the smallest and less populated town, Kozani’s UHI has approximately the magnitude of the one measured in Thessaloniki and it is higher from those measured in Volos and Agrinio during the winter period. Finally, the study investigates the energy demands in the city regarding the cooling and heating hours and comments on the impacts of the UHI.

TL;DR: In this article, a citizen survey was conducted using an instrument that contained 14 indices and assessed citizens' perceived importance of e-government as well as e-democracy features incorporated in municipal portals.
Abstract: The purpose of the present study is first to evaluate local e-government initiatives in Greece from a citizen perspective and then to test how well Greek municipalities perform on the most important e-government applications as perceived by citizens. Towards this end, a citizen survey was conducted using an instrument that contained 14 indices and assessed citizens’ perceived importance of e-government as well as e-democracy features incorporated in municipal portals. Results indicate that Greek citizens are not ready to move forward with the adoption of more participatory and deliberative tools of local governments’ websites. Moreover, Greek citizens want easy to complete online services while they place emphasis on the informational content of the local governments’ websites. In addition they desire simple ways to communicate with their local governments such as contact or email forms and suggestion boxes. Based on the citizen survey results, a quantitative website analysis was conducted to examine the level of sophistication of Greek municipal portals in regards to the most important e-government features. Results suggest that Greek local governments can be regarded as laggards in the provision of online services to citizens and businesses as well as the inclusion of information for tourists.

TL;DR: The European Sustainable Energy Award for Prisons (E-seaP) is an Intelligent Energy Europe project that deals with the sustainable energy behavior of prison sites in 8 European regions as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Prison sites are a special type of public buildings or facilities in general that are overlooked by policy makers. The prison size and constant energy use results in excessive energy consumptions, which implies that a focus on such sites is necessary. Most authorities rather focus on the security aspects of prison estates than their energy efficiency, and this is transferred naturally to all members of the prison community, i.e. staff and their families, prisoners and their families and wider community. In this context, the European Sustainable Energy Award for Prisons (E-seaP) is an Intelligent Energy Europe project that deals with the sustainable energy behavior of prison sites in 8 European regions. The main goal is to devise an assessment framework for energy sustainability in prisons using a holistic approach, which takes into consideration not only the building energy management but also the provision for education and training and the wider community impact. This paper presents the adopted assessment framework along with a comparison of energy consumption in 17 prison sites in Europe. The assessment procedure may be adapted for use also in other types of public buildings.
