Abstract: This paper is related to Greece’s water policy as it was formulated after the incorporation of Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60. We examined the status and evolution of constitutional provisions for the protection and management of water resources spanning from the first Greek Constitution of 1843 up to the current constitutional text of 1975 as formulated in 2008 with the incorporation of its third revision. In parallel, we investigated the Greek water pricing legal framework in accordance with Article 9 "Recovery of costs for water services" of the WFD. We compared the actual rates of water services as set by Municipal Water Supply Sewerage Companies (DEYAs) operating in 11 cities across Greece. The findings reveal that there are considerable problems and delays in the implementation of WFD. Regarding municipal water pricing policies, we concluded that DEYAs do not follow a unified and structured pricing scheme. Furthermore, several companies do not discriminate between data costs either per service (water supply, sewerage) or per use (water supply, irrigation, etc.). Finally, it is evident that none of them has yet adopted the relevant provisions set by the European directive for full cost recovery and water pricing reflecting financial, environmental and water resources costs.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors determining consumers’ intentions to adopt NFC proximity mobile payment services (p-mps). An extended version of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), a model that incorporates the most relevant theoretical approaches in the adoption literature was selected to investigate the consumers’ adoption process. To empirically test the proposed model, data were collected from 513 consumers of mobile internet service providers in Greece and were analyzed using PLS. The results indicated that p-mps features, expressed by consumers’ expectations about service performance and required efforts, along with the social context effects have the biggest impact on consumers’ intentions to use the service, followed by channel characteristics, reflecting consumers’ beliefs about p-mps usage risk and trust. Potential customers’ characteristics moderating analysis suggested that the effects of performance expectancy and perceived trust on behavioral intentions are affected by gender, age and previous experience, while that of social influence only by potential customers’ previous experience. Theoretical and managerial implications, limitations and suggestions for further research are provided at the end of the study.

Abstract: Olive tree cultivation is of major importance in Greece. It has been proved that irrigation of olive orchards increases their production. The classic method followed is diesel pump irrigation. Since Greece favours high insolation the alternative of photovoltaic pumping is proposed. A case study for an olive orchard in Crete is studied with the two alternatives. The photovoltaic pumping system is a direct pumping system as olive trees tolerate even deficit irrigation and storage tank increases the cost. A comparison using the Life Cycle Costing method is proposed. Considerations about climate and economic conditions are taken into account and the study concludes with the profound advantage of the renewable system over the conventional one in strict economic terms.

Abstract: Renewable Energy Sources (RES) plants still have to operate at their maximum possible output and are therefore independent of electric energy consumption. Thus, coordination between distributed generators, energy storage systems and flexible loads is expected to add a great value to grid operations and facilitate further RES penetration. Increasing penetration of home automation technologies at the demand-side and their control possibilities over energy consumption may also make valuable contributions to the grid operation. Thus, the control system of the future grid should be compatible with home automation systems. This paper presents a simple technique that enables home automation technologies to be used for demand-side management in smart grids. The proposed technique does not require additional interface or software tools and therefore is cost-effective. Experimental results prove that these technologies could contribute to the voltage regulation as well as to the application of efficient energy management policies of microgrids.
