Abstract: BACKGROUND: Satureja Khuzestanica is an endemic plant of Iran that is widely distributed in the southern part of the country. It is famous for its medical uses as an analgesic and antiseptic in folk medicine. The present study was designed to explore the toxicological and pharmacological effects of essential oil of Satureja Khuzestanica (SKEO) in vivo. MATERIAL/METHODS: The intraperitoneal LD50 of SKEO was determined. Teratogenicity was determined by administration of SKEO at doses of 500, 1000 and 1500 ppm to pregnant rats during days 6 to 015 of gestation. FRAP and TBARS assays were used to determine total antioxidant power and lipid peroxidation respectively. Diabetes and hyperlipidemia were induced by administration of streptozocin and lipid regimen in rats. SKEO (1000 ppm) was administered in drinking water for 10 days. RESULTS: SKEO is not lethal up to a dose of 2 g kg-1 in rats. In the teratogenicity test, dams of the treated group were active and did not show any signs of toxicity. A significant increase in the number of implantation and live fetuses were observed with SKEO (500 and 1000 ppm) in comparison to the control group. SKEO treatment decreased the normal blood lipid peroxidation level and increased total antioxidant power. Significant decreases in fasting blood glucose and triglyceride levels were observed with SKEO in diabetic and antihyperlipidemic rats respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary study indicates the safety and interesting stimulatory effect of SKEO on reproduction. The antioxidant properties of SKEO may explain its antidiabetic and triglyceride-lowering effects.

Abstract: Objective: To examine the causes and majority of poisoning in Tehran. Methods: The 7000 poisoning cases referred to Loghman-Hakim Hospital in Tehran over six months in 1994 were evaluated retrospectively. Results: The overall female to male ratio was 1.8:1. Most poisoning occurred in the age range 2-6 y for children and 21-40 y for adults. Oral ingestion was the most common route of intoxication. In children, boys had a higher frequency of poisoning than girls. Most cases of children were referred to the hospital between 8 am and 8 pm. In adults referred to the hospital, there was little diurnal variation in poisoning presentations. In adults, drugs were the most common cause of intoxication (60.2%). Of these, benzodiazepines (24.5%) were the most frequent, followed by antidepressants (20.5%) and analgesics (18%). Pesticide and opiate intoxications were also commonly observed. Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate whether probiotics improve symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for studies that investigated the efficacy of probiotics in the management of irritable bowel syndrome. Clinical improvement was the key outcome of interest. Data were searched within the time period of 1966 through September 2007. Eight randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trials met our criteria and were included in the analysis. Pooling of eight trials for the outcome of clinical improvement yielded a significant relative risk of 1.22 (95 percent confidence interval, 1.07–1.4; P = 0.0042). Probiotics may improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and can be used as supplement to standard therapy.

Abstract: Between 1991-2000, Leishmania species were isolated and characterized by isoenzyme and molecular analysis from rodents caught in various parts of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In areas endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis, parasites were observed by direct microscopy in smears from 18.6% of 566 specimens. L. major was isolated from 4 species: Rhombomys opimus, Meriones libycus, Tatera indica and Mer. hurrianae. L. turanica was isolated from R. opimus for the first time in this country. In endemic areas of visceral leishmaniasis, parasites were observed in liver and spleen from 13.7% of 504 rodents. Two species were positive on culture; promastigotes isolated from Mer. persicus were characterized as L. donovani zymodeme LON50 and from Mesocricetus auratus as L. infantum LON49.
