01 Sep 2007TL;DR: The implementation of national security and emergency preparedness services in a next-generation network (NGN) Internet-Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) environment is described and the implementation was tested during a global interoperability event.
Abstract: Emergency telecommunications services, which provide priority access to public telephony for those responding to emergency situations, have previously been offered in the U.S. and other countries around the world in the public switched telephone network and more recently in cellular telephone networks. This paper describes the implementation of these national security and emergency preparedness (NS/EP) services in a next-generation network (NGN) Internet-Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) environment. The implementation was tested during a global interoperability event. The tests’ results, and implications of the analysis of the test data to future developments, are discussed.

16 May 2000TL;DR: This paper surveys the technologies necessary to provide mobile VoIP, and identifies relevant technical challenges.
Abstract: The use of IP to transport voice is receiving significant attention in the telecommunications and data networking industries. Commonly known as Voice-over-IP (VoIP), this technology has the potential to allow user communication involving multiple media types, and between terminals that offer improved capabilities and user interfaces. Meanwhile there has been explosive growth in the demand for wireless connectivity, raising the question of how VoIP can be extended to situations where users and terminals can be mobile. In this paper we survey the technologies necessary to provide mobile VoIP, and identify relevant technical challenges.
