TL;DR: The most important addenda of the proposed E3F are a sophisticated power model for various base station types, as well as large-scale long-term traffic models, which are applied to quantify the energy efficiency of the downlink of a 3GPP LTE radio access network.
Abstract: In order to quantify the energy efficiency of a wireless network, the power consumption of the entire system needs to be captured. In this article, the necessary extensions with respect to existing performance evaluation frameworks are discussed. The most important addenda of the proposed energy efficiency evaluation framework (E3F) are a sophisticated power model for various base station types, as well as large-scale long-term traffic models. The BS power model maps the RF output power radiated at the antenna elements to the total supply power of a BS site. The proposed traffic model emulates the spatial distribution of the traffic demands over large geographical regions, including urban and rural areas, as well as temporal variations between peak and off-peak hours. Finally, the E3F is applied to quantify the energy efficiency of the downlink of a 3GPP LTE radio access network.

TL;DR: This paper explores current perspectives in power consumption for next generation networks, and provides a detailed survey on emerging technologies, projects, and work-in-progress standards, which can be adopted in networks and related infrastructures in order to reduce their carbon footprint.
Abstract: The concept of energy-efficient networking has begun to spread in the past few years, gaining increasing popularity. Besides the widespread sensitivity to ecological issues, such interest also stems from economic needs, since both energy costs and electrical requirements of telcos' and Internet Service Providers' infrastructures around the world show a continuously growing trend. In this respect, a common opinion among networking researchers is that the sole introduction of low consumption silicon technologies may not be enough to effectively curb energy requirements. Thus, for disruptively boosting the network energy efficiency, these hardware enhancements must be integrated with ad-hoc mechanisms that explicitly manage energy saving, by exploiting network-specific features. This paper aims at providing a twofold contribution to green networking. At first, we explore current perspectives in power consumption for next generation networks. Secondly, we provide a detailed survey on emerging technologies, projects, and work-in-progress standards, which can be adopted in networks and related infrastructures in order to reduce their carbon footprint. The considered approaches range from energy saving techniques for networked hosts, to technologies and mechanisms for designing next-generation and energy-aware networks and networking equipment.

TL;DR: A new real-time urban monitoring system that marks the unprecedented monitoring of a large urban area, which covered most of the city of Rome, in real time using a variety of sensing systems and will hopefully open the way to a new paradigm of understanding and optimizing urban dynamics.
Abstract: This paper describes a new real-time urban monitoring system. The system uses the Localizing and Handling Network Event Systems (LocHNESs) platform developed by Telecom Italia for the real-time evaluation of urban dynamics based on the anonymous monitoring of mobile cellular networks. In addition, data are supplemented based on the instantaneous positioning of buses and taxis to provide information about urban mobility in real time, ranging from traffic conditions to the movements of pedestrians throughout the city. This system was exhibited at the Tenth International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. It marks the unprecedented monitoring of a large urban area, which covered most of the city of Rome, in real time using a variety of sensing systems and will hopefully open the way to a new paradigm of understanding and optimizing urban dynamics.

TL;DR: JADE (Java Agent Development Framework) is a software environment to build agent systems for the management of networked information resources in compliance with the FIPA specifications for interoperable multi-agent systems.
Abstract: JADE (Java Agent Development Framework) is a software environment to build agent systems for the management of networked information resources in compliance with the FIPA specifications for interoperable multi-agent systems. JADE provides a middleware for the development and execution of agent-based applications which can seamless work and interoperate both in wired and wireless environment. Moreover, JADE supports the development of multi-agent systems through the predefined programmable and extensible agent model and a set of management and testing tools. Currently, JADE is one of the most used and promising agent development framework; in fact, it has a large user group, involving more than two thousands active members, it has been used to realize real systems in different application sectors, and its future development is guided by a governing board involving some important industrial companies.

TL;DR: This paper analyzes the most important requirements for an effective BSN-specific software framework, enabling efficient signal-processing applications and presents signal processing in node environment (SPINE), an open-source programming framework, designed to support rapid and flexible prototyping and management of BSN applications.
Abstract: Wireless body sensor networks (BSNs) possess enormous potential for changing people's daily lives. They can enhance many human-centered application domains such as m-Health, sport and wellness, and human-centered applications that involve physical/virtual social interactions. However, there are still challenging issues that limit their wide diffusion in real life: primarily, the programming complexity of these systems, due to the lack of high-level software abstractions, and the hardware constraints of wearable devices. In contrast with low-level programming and general-purpose middleware, domain-specific frameworks are an emerging programming paradigm designed to fulfill the lack of suitable BSN programming support with proper abstraction layers. This paper analyzes the most important requirements for an effective BSN-specific software framework, enabling efficient signal-processing applications. Specifically, we present signal processing in node environment (SPINE), an open-source programming framework, designed to support rapid and flexible prototyping and management of BSN applications. We describe how SPINE efficiently addresses the identified requirements while providing performance analysis on the most common hardware/software sensor platforms. We also report a few high-impact BSN applications that have been entirely implemented using SPINE to demonstrate practical examples of its effectiveness and flexibility. This development experience has notably led to the definition of a SPINE-based design methodology for BSN applications. Finally, lessons learned from the development of such applications and from feedback received by the SPINE community are discussed.
