Abstract: Companies have increasingly advocated social media technologies to transform businesses and improve organizational performance. This study scrutinizes the predictive relationships between social media and firm equity value, the relative effects of social media metrics compared with conventional online behavioral metrics, and the dynamics of these relationships. The results derived from vector autoregressive models suggest that social media-based metrics (web blogs and consumer ratings) are significant leading indicators of firm equity value. Interestingly, conventional online behavioral metrics (Google searches and web traffic) are found to have a significant yet substantially weaker predictive relationship with firm equity value than social media metrics. We also find that social media has a faster predictive value, i.e., shorter “wear-in” time, than conventional online media. These findings are robust to a consistent set of volume-based measures (total blog posts, rating volume, total page views, and search intensity). Collectively, this study proffers new insights for senior executives with respect to firm equity valuations and the transformative power of social media.

Abstract: We develop two measures of board composition to investigate whether directors appointed by the CEO have allegiance to the CEO and decrease their monitoring. Co-option is the fraction of the board comprised of directors appointed after the CEO assumed office. As Co-option increases, board monitoring decreases: turnover-performance sensitivity diminishes, pay increases (without commensurate increase in pay-performance sensitivity), and investment increases. Non-Co-opted Independence�the fraction of directors who are independent and were appointed before the CEO�has more explanatory power for monitoring effectiveness than the conventional measure of board independence. Our results suggest that not all independent directors are effective monitors.

Abstract: Depressed contractility is a central feature of the failing human heart and has been attributed to altered [Ca2+]i. This study examined the respective roles of the L-type Ca2+ current (ICa), SR Ca2+ uptake, storage and release, Ca2+ transport via the Na+-Ca2+ exchanger (NCX), and Ca2+ buffering in the altered Ca2+ transients of failing human ventricular myocytes. Electrophysiological techniques were used to measure and control V(m) and measure I(m), respectively, and Fluo-3 was used to measure [Ca2+]i in myocytes from nonfailing (NF) and failing (F) human hearts. Ca2+ transients from F myocytes were significantly smaller and decayed more slowly than those from NF hearts. Ca2+ uptake rates by the SR and the amount of Ca2+ stored in the SR were significantly reduced in F myocytes. There were no significant changes in the rate of Ca2+ removal from F myocytes by the NCX, in the density of NCX current as a function of [Ca2+]i, ICa density, or cellular Ca2+ buffering. However, Ca2+ influx during the late portions of the action potential seems able to elevate [Ca2+]i in F but not in NF myocytes. A reduction in the rate of net Ca2+ uptake by the SR slows the decay of the Ca2+ transient and reduces SR Ca2+ stores. This leads to reduced SR Ca2+ release, which induces additional Ca2+ influx during the plateau phase of the action potential, further slowing the decay of the Ca2+ transient. These changes can explain the defective Ca2+ transients of the failing human ventricular myocyte.

Abstract: Many organizations are concerned about the potential for workplace aggression and violence, yet pay little heed to lesser forms of interpersonal and organizational mistreatment. Drawing from knowledge and experiences of managers, attorneys, law enforcement officers and emergency medical professionals, we report a multi-method, multidisciplinary inductive study addressing two questions: (1) what is the nature of workplace incivility and how does incivility differ from and fit among other types of workplace mistreatment; and (2) what are some implications of incivility for employees and organizations?
