Abstract: Abilities associated with adjudicative competence were assessed among 927 adolescents in juvenile detention facilities and community settings. Adolescents' abilities were compared to those of 466 young adults in jails and in the community. Participants at 4 locations across the United States completed a standardized measure of abilities relevant for competence to stand trial (the MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool—Criminal Adjudication) as well as a new procedure for assessing psychosocial influences on legal decisions often required of defendants (MacArthur Judgment Evaluation). Youths aged 15 and younger performed more poorly than young adults, with a greater proportion manifesting a level of impairment consistent with that of persons found incompetent to stand trial. Adolescents also tended more often than young adults to make choices (e.g., about plea agreements) that reflected compliance with authority, as well as influences of psychosocial immaturity. Implications of these results for policy and practice are discussed, with an emphasis on the development of legal standards that recognize immaturity as a potential predicate of incompetence to stand trial.

Abstract: The current short-term longitudinal study investigated the role of college students’ identity development and motivational beliefs in predicting their chemistry achievement and intentions to leave science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors. We collected 4 waves of data over 1 semester from 363 diverse undergraduate STEM students enrolled in a chemistry lab course. The results of analyses that examined the reciprocal relations among the variables over time (i.e., cross-lagged path analysis) suggested that identity development that involved exploration (e.g., information-seeking, reflection) was positively related to students’ beliefs about their competence and value for the STEM major and negatively related to perceptions of effort cost (drawbacks associated with time and effort) for the major. Identity development that did not involve exploration was related to low competence beliefs and high perceptions of costs for the STEM major. Competence beliefs, values, and perceptions of cost for the major were dynamically related to chemistry achievement and to students’ intentions to leave the STEM major over the semester, with different kinds of cost perceptions (drawbacks associated with effort, lost opportunities, and stress and anxiety) relating differentially to students’ intentions. The results support the role of identity development in students’ motivation for a STEM major and address a gap in the literature regarding the role of perceived cost in students’ academic choices.

Abstract: Coprime arrays can achieve an increased number of degrees of freedom by deriving the equivalent signals of a virtual array. However, most existing methods fail to utilize all information received by the coprime array due to the non-uniformity of the derived virtual array, resulting in an inevitable estimation performance loss. To address this issue, we propose a novel virtual array interpolation-based algorithm for coprime array direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in this paper. The idea of array interpolation is employed to construct a virtual uniform linear array such that all virtual sensors in the non-uniform virtual array can be utilized, based on which the atomic norm of the second-order virtual array signals is defined. By investigating the properties of virtual domain atomic norm, it is proved that the covariance matrix of the interpolated virtual array is related to the virtual measurements under the Hermitian positive semi-definite Toeplitz condition. Accordingly, an atomic norm minimization problem with respect to the equivalent virtual measurement vector is formulated to reconstruct the interpolated virtual array covariance matrix in a gridless manner, where the reconstructed covariance matrix enables off-grid DOA estimation. Simulation results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed DOA estimation algorithm for coprime arrays.
