TL;DR: The Sudbury Basin in the Canadian Shield has been proposed as a meteorite impact site subsequently deformed by endogenic tectonism as mentioned in this paper, and detailed study of the structural geology strengthens this hypothesis and strongly suggests that the deformation of the basin was coeval with major folding and flattening (2.0 to 1.6 b.y.
Abstract: The Sudbury Basin in the Canadian Shield has been proposed as a meteorite impact site subsequently deformed by endogenic tectonism. Detailed study of the structural geology strengthens this hypothesis and strongly suggests that the deformation of the basin was coeval with major folding and flattening (2.0 to 1.6 b.y. ago) of the rocks of the eastern Southern province and the northwesternmost Grenville province. The structural geometry indicates that most of these rocks have a similar strain history. Finite-strain analysis of deformed concretions within the Sudbury Basin suggests that originally it was almost circular in outline.

TL;DR: Variations in the depth distribution of biomass, due to differing growth and sloughing patterns, resulted in different depth relations of photosynthesis at the other rooting depths, and light extinction and light adaptation of photosynthetic tissues were other factors determining the depth relations.
Abstract: Photosynthetic rates and productivity of Myriophyllum spicatum L. were examined in the littoral by incubating shoot sections at three rooting depths using a 14C technique. At a rooting depth of 240 cm, the interrelation of biomass and photosynthetic rates resulted in the production of 56% of the total photosynthetic productivity within 100 cm of the water surface in May. In August, 57% of the total productivity occurred within only 20 cm of the surface. Variations in the depth distribution of biomass, due to differing growth and sloughing patterns, resulted in different depth relations of photosynthesis at the other rooting depths. Light extinction and light adaptation of photosynthetic tissues were other factors determining the depth relations of photosynthesis.

TL;DR: Information concerning types and frequencies of pretreatment drug abuse, obtained by interview from 11,380 patients included in the first two years of the NIMH-TCU Drug Abuse Reporting Program, indicated that the most frequent drug-abuse pattern was the daily or weekly use of heroin with no other drugs.
Abstract: Information concerning types and frequencies of pretreatment drug abuse, obtained by interview from 11,380 patients included in the first two years (June 1969-June 1971) of the NIMH-TCU Drug Abuse Reporting Program, were examined with respect to patterns of usage. Twenty-eight patterns were defined, involving various combinations of drugs used and frequencies of use. The results indicated that the most frequent drug-abuse pattern in this patient sample, accounting for 28% of the entire sample, was the daily or weekly use of heroin with no other drugs. The daily or weekly use of heroin with cocaine, with marihuana, and with both cocaine and marihuana were also frequently observed patterns, and combined with the heroin-only pattern, they characterized the majority of all the patients. The most common patterns reported by the remainder of the patients were of poly-drug use, typically involving marihuana, amphetamines, and barbiturates, as well as heroin and cocaine.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the use of a psychophysiological method for training children in the control of hyperactive behavior by incorporating biofeedback and operant conditioning principles to help the child develop self-control over excessive and distracting motor behaviors and to maintain attention in learning situations.
Abstract: The use of a psychophysiological method for training children in the control of hyperactive behavior is explored. The method involved attention training through breathing control, incorporating biofeedback and operant conditioning principles to help the child develop self-control over excessive and distracting motor behaviors and to maintain attention in learning situations. Six children (age 6-8 years old), from a private school for children with learning disabilities, participated in the study, three assigned to a group given the breathing control and attention training and three assigned to a control group. Measures obtained before, during, and after training included respiration indices, attention and vigilance test performance scores, and teacher ratings of classroom behaviors. The findings supported the feasibility of the training approach and provided important information relevant for future refinements in training and evaluation procedures.

TL;DR: P pneumographic respiration records were obtained on 22 female undergraduates during a visual signal detection task and analysis of signal detection with respect to respiration phase showed that signals presented during exhalation were detected more frequently than those presented during inhalation.
Abstract: Previous studies have implicated respiration as a source of intra-S variation in visual signal detection tasks. In the present study, pneumographic respiration records were obtained on 22 female undergraduates during a visual signal detection task. The analysis of signal detection with respect to respiration phase showed that signals presented during exhalation were detected more frequently than those presented during inhalation. These findings suggest that the intra-S variation in signal detection performance may be partially accounted for by respiratory behavior at the moment of signal presentation.

Abstract: A coincidence measurement was made of the absolute cross section for electron-atomic-field bremsstrahlung, differential in photon energy, photon-emission angle, and electron scattering angle. The incident electron energy was 140 keV and the scattering materials were thin films of aluminum and gold. The data are compared to the theoretical calculations of Elwert and Haug and of Bethe and Heitler. Both theories give generally satisfactory agreement for aluminum. The Elwert-Haug theory is somewhat more accurate for gold.

Abstract: The analytical expansion self-consistent field method was employed to perform ab initio calculations for the ground states of the rare-earth ions, Tm2+, 4f13, 2F, and Tm3+, 4f12, 3H, (Z = 69). In each case the total number of basis functions used in the analytical expansions was 29, distributed as follows: 10, 8, 5, and 6, for the symmetries s, p, d, and f, respectively. All of the orbital exponents of the basis functions were optimized repeatedly, to the extent of the single-precision computer representation. Values of 〈rn〉 for the 4f orbital of both ions are also presented, for the convenience of experimentalists.

Abstract: The role of knowledge of results (KR) in a schematic concept formation task was clarified by manipulating the specificity of information provided during feedback. Ss learned to discriminate between pairs of random forms from two schema families. Verbal correction was compared with a functional KR procedure in which the schema prototypes were superimposed over test stimuli. In no case did verbal correction improve learning in comparison with functional KR. Differences in acquisition persisted in a retention test.

TL;DR: This paper presents some novel observations and recommendations about the uses and usefulness of operational research models as a tool for regulation of industry and introduces the concept of ex post models.
Abstract: This paper presents some novel observations and recommendations about the uses and usefulness of operational research models as a tool for regulation of industry. Reference is made to the first use of a model for regulatory analyses by the United States Federal Power Commission in a natural gas proceeding. A criticism is given of this first attempt to use a model for regulatory purposes, and from this criticism a strategy for a more effective use of models is developed. As a part of this strategy the concept of ex post models is introduced. In addition the potential conflict of model use and the guarantee of due process of law is considered. The paper concludes with a set of remarks on the recommended posture that an operational research analyst should assume when working with policy makers.

Abstract: Reading performance and performance in a schematic concept formation task involving stimuli resembling physical configurations of words were examined in a college sample of initially poor and initially good readers. The initial level of reading performance was more related to the individual’s subsequent performance in the concept formation task than to rate of progress in reading performance. The results appeared sufficient to support further investigation into the nature of processes common to performance in both tasks. Various methodoligical advantages of a schema theory approach to the reading process are discussed.

TL;DR: Kahn, Hottes, and Davis as discussed by the authors found that both females and males were more cooperative with a contingent strategy than with a noncontingent strategy, while females did not discriminate between the two strategies.
Abstract: were consistently found, however the direction of these differences varied from study to study. In reviewing the contradictory results it become clear that mates cooperated more with a contingent strategy (a strategy which chose alternatives as a function of the choices of the subject and could be another subject or a simulated subject) than did females, and females cooperated more with a noncontingent strategy (a strategy which had a random or set group of responses independent of the choices of the subject). Komorita (1965) appeared to have verified this inference when within the same paradigm he compared contingent and noncontingent strategy, finding that males cooperated more with a contingent strategy and females cooperated more with a noncontingent strategy. Kahn, Hottes, and Davis (1971) found both females and males were more cooperative with a contingent strategy than with a noncontingent strategy. On the later trials in the game males discriminated between contingent and noncontingent strategies while females did not. However, on a questionaire males and females showed no differences in understandincontingent versus noncontingent play. The results of Kahn, Hottes, and Davis seem at odds with all previous research in that females were more competitive than males under both contingent and noncontingent strategies of the other. Apparently it was not to the contingency of the strategy that the females were responding, but to some other dimension. In all of the studies employing

TL;DR: It was concluded that personality should be considered in assessing Ss' responses in certain types of perceptual experimentation.
Abstract: 28 Ss' responses to visual perceptual tasks were measured as a function of certain personality characteristics. Half the Ss saw a list of 20 neutral words and half saw a list with four taboo words interspersed. Accuracy was independent of personality characteristics. However, the confidence ratings of Ss differed significantly as a function of each of the three personality variables tested. It was concluded that personality should be considered in assessing Ss' responses in certain types of perceptual experimentation.

TL;DR: These results supported two models of attribute selection and utilization; discussions of these models and their relationships to the findings were directed toward the analysis of the “schema plus correction” hypothesis.
Abstract: A transfer paradigm was used to study the effect of constraint redundancy (Rc) and stimulus exposure time (ET) on the “same-different” classifications of pairs of spatially represented Markov patterns (Vargus 7 stimuli; Evans & Mueller, 1966). In the training phase, each S classified, without feedback, pairs of Vargus 7 stimuli generated as deviations from three prototypes (i.e., most probable sequences). Each S received stimuli generated at one of three levels of Rc and exposed for one of three durations. In the test phase, all Ss classified different deviations from the same three prototypes at a single Rc level and a single ET level. Unsupervised classification performance was above chance in both training and transfer and increased slightly over trials. Significant Rc and ET effects were found. These results supported two models of attribute selection and utilization; discussions of these models and their relationships to the findings were directed toward the analysis of the “schema plus correction” hypothesis.

TL;DR: For example, Hendrick et al. as discussed by the authors found that high prejudiced Sis were differentially attracted to a white and a Negro stranger, while low prejudiced sis rated the Negro as a more desirable work partner.
Abstract: not provided belief information support Rokeach, Smith, and Evans’ (1960) suggestion that in order for belief congruence to override racial or ethnic considerations, the beliefs of the stimulus person must be salient (Byrne & Wong, 1962; Davenport, 1971; Hendrick, Bixenstine, & Hawkins, 1971; Stein, Hardyck, & Smith, 1965). Those results must be qualified, however, by noting that in studies which identified high and low prejudiced Ss only the high prejudiced Ss responded in that way (Byrne & Wong,.1962; Hendrick et al., 1971; Wong, 1961). Wong (1961) found that, while high prejudiced Sis were differentially attracted to a white and a Negro stranger, low prejudiced Ss rated the Negro as a more desirable work partner. In another study’; Byrne & Wong (1962) reported that high prejudiced Ss assumed greater dissimilarity between themselves and an unknown Negro than between themselves and an unknown white. The same result was not reported for low prejudiced Ss. Hendrick et al. (1971) found that high prejudiced _Ss assumed greater dissimilarity between themselves and a Negro stimulus person than between themselves and a white stimulus person. However, the high prejudiced _Ss did not respond differentially on a Likability Scale. The low prejudiced Ss did not respond differentially to either the Similarity or Likability Scale, and they were

TL;DR: It is suggested that preresponse cues only influence a frustrative depression to S—, and that for unknown reasons such a depression failed to appear in this study.
Abstract: Five groups of rats received differential conditioning to large and small reward in a straight runway. Three groups were confined to startbox for 0, 2, or 8 sec prior to the opportunity to traverse the runway, with no preresponse discriminative cues to signal reward magnitude until admission to the runway. Two additional groups received the discriminative cues for 2 or 8 sec while confined in the startbox. All Ss learned the discrimination, though the sharp depression in performance to S— found in certain other studies failed to appear. Discriminative cue presentation in the startbox did not influence performance. Together, these facts suggest that preresponse cues only influence a frustrative depression to S—, and that for unknown reasons such a depression failed to appear in this study. Startbox confinement depressed performance to both rewards, with longer durations producing greater depressions.

TL;DR: Cayo del Grullo is a hypersaline estuarine bay on the south Texas Gulf Coast as mentioned in this paper, where most surficial sediment is mud, with sand predominating around the periphery of the bay.
Abstract: Cayo del Grullo is a hypersaline estuarine bay on the south Texas Gulf Coast. Most surficial sediment is mud, with sand predominating around the periphery of the bay. Influx of sediment is small and distribution of the several lithofacies and biofacies within the bay is related directly to the prevailing energy conditions. The mud comes from several sources, from Laguna Madre, from erosion of surrounding Pleistocene bluffs, and from intermittent streams during heavy rains. Organic content of bottom sediments is inversely proportional to grain size. Oolitic aragonitic sands are present in the bay and are more extensive than previously reported. Oolitic grains are precipitated and deposited in the high-energy swash zone. Other carbonate material End_Page 2205------------------------------ in the sediments is primarily pelecypod shell fragments. Concentration of carbonate material is a function of currents and wave activity. A few species of Foraminifera and Ostracoda which can tolerate severe fluctuations of salinity comprise the microfauna. End_of_Article - Last_Page 2206------------

TL;DR: The model underlying this procedure assumes that individuals differentially weight the several dimensions of a common psychological space and that these individual weights as well as stimulus projections on the common axes can be determined as part of the scaling solution.
Abstract: CARROLL and Chang (1970) have recently developed a new and powerful procedure, INDSCAL, for treating individual differences in multidimensional scaling. The model underlying this procedure assumes that individuals differentially weight the several dimensions of a common psychological space and that these individual weights as well as stimulus projections on the common axes can be determined as part of the scaling solution. The method of data analysis involves a generalization of the Eckart-Young approach to matrix decomposition known as "canonical decomposition of N-way tables." The INDSCAL program decomposes a derived three-way table of scalar products between stimuli for individuals to produce

TL;DR: Three rats were trained to barpress for food on a multiple schedule that favor emotionality theories over preference theories of behavioral contrast and shocks were “felt” by the rats, but had no effect on behavioral contrast.
Abstract: Three rats were trained to barpress for food on a multiple schedule. One component of the multiple schedule was a FI 2-min schedule. The other component of the multiple schedule was a concurrent FI 2-min FRX schedule. X was constant for each rat, but different between rats. Free shocks were dispensed on a VT 30-sec schedule during the concurrent component. The shocks were “felt” by the rats, but had no effect on behavioral contrast. The data favor emotionality theories over preference theories of behavioral contrast.
