TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the potential for practices and capabilities to be either compensatory or additive in nature, and explore how they are developed in a portfolio, considering the potential to invest in certain practices or capabilities to compensate for the lack of investments in others.
Abstract: Purpose – Operational practices and operational capabilities are critical yet distinct elements in operations strategy. The purpose of this paper is to examine their conceptual differences and explore how they are developed in a portfolio, considering the potential for practices and capabilities to be either compensatory or additive in nature.Design/methodology/approach – The compensatory model argues that the lack of investments in certain practices or capabilities can be offset by higher level of investments in other practices or capabilities. In contrast, the additive model argues that the firm must invest in certain practices or capabilities and that trade‐offs are impossible. The authors examine evidence for these two competing models using an approach borrowed from studies of multi‐attribute consumer preference models and statistical comparisons of non‐nested models.Findings – Data for the study were collected from operations managers who were members of a large professional organization. The findin...

TL;DR: Integrative models containing client and treatment components were tested in a sample of 396 daily opioid users from three methadone maintenance treatment sites and showed that group session attendance was associated with higher rates of drug-negative urines.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present conceptual, empirical, and practical reasons for increasing the use of node-link (box-line) graphic representations in psychological treatment systems, arguing that these general-purpose displays offer clinical advantages by clearly representing interrelationships among ideas, emotions, and actions that are often lost in verbal discourse.
Abstract: Research in psychology and communication shows a strong advantage for visual displays in comparison with typical language, and technological innovations in computer graphics and printing capabilities now make them cost-effective as well. It can be argued that the greater use of evidence-based visualization strategies can enhance communication occurring in the interactions among and between health service delivery counselors, clients, evaluators, administrators, and clinical supervisors. In this article we present conceptual, empirical, and practical reasons for increasing the use of node-link (box-line) graphic representations in psychological treatment systems. These general-purpose displays offer clinical advantages by clearly representing interrelationships among ideas, emotions, and actions that are often lost in verbal discourse.

TL;DR: Results show that these porous silicon-containing polymer scaffolds enhance calcification, can be considered nontoxic to cells, and support the proliferation, viability, attachment, and differentiation of bone precursor cells.
Abstract: In this study, the fabrication and characterization of highly porous composites composed of poly(e-caprolactone) and bioactive mesoporous silicon (BioSilicon) prepared using salt-leaching and microemulsion/freeze-drying methods are described. The role of silicon, along with porosity, in the scaffolds on calcium phosphate deposition was assessed using acellular in vitro calcification analyses. The presence of bioactive silicon in these scaffolds is essential for the deposition of calcium phosphate while the samples are immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF). Silicon-containing scaffolds produced using salt-leaching methods are more likely to calcify as a consequence of SBF exposure than those produced using microemulsion methods. In vitro proliferation and cell viability assays of these porous composites using human embryonic kidney fibroblast cells indicate that no cytotoxic effects are present in the scaffolds under the conditions used. Preliminary analyses of bone sialoprotein and alkaline phosphatase e...
