Abstract: Successional stages of macrofaunal fouling organisms of test blocks were exposed in the subtropical waters of Hong Kong. A comparison of 5 types of wood commonly used to build boats, and 5 types of locally available antifouling paints is made. Rafts holding the test blocks were exposed at 1 m depth from 24 March, 1970, to 23 October, 1970. The initial macrofoulers on the control (chinese fir) were Balanus and Bugula, and the final dominance was a Styela-Mytilus community. On painted surfaces, the Balanus-Elasmopus community was dominant. Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity were recorded weekly during the test. A preliminary chemical analysis of percentage pigment and cuprous oxide content in the antifouling paints is presented.

Abstract: Let (E, τ) be a complete, semi-metrizable topological vector space. Let p be a pseudo-norm (not to be confused with a semi-norm, cf. (8), p. 18) inducing the topology τ. For each positive real number r, letLet f be a continuous linear function from E into a topological vector space F. The open mapping theorem of Banach may be stated as follows: If f is nearly open, that is, if the closure of each f(Vr) is a neighbourhood of O in F then whenever β > α > O; in particular, each f(Vr) is a neighbourhood of O. We note that f, identifying with its graph, is a closed linear subspace of the product space E × F. In this paper, we shall employ techniques developed by Kelley (6) and Baker (1) to extend the theorem to the case where f is taken to be a closed cone in E × F. The generalized theorem throws some light onto the duality theory of ordered spaces. In particular, the theorem of Ando–Ellis is generalized to (not assumed, a priori to be complete) normed vector spaces.

Abstract: A red tide in June 1971 off Hong Kong immediately followed the passing of a typhoon; the causative agent was Noctiluca scintillans. Previous occurrence of N. scintillans was during winter. The summer conditions were not suitable for N. scintillans, which disappeared in a few days, causing no apparent harm. Its presence in high density is explained by convergence associated with the high velocity winds of the typhoon.

Abstract: Escherichia coli cells lysogenic for temperate phage HK239 exclude phages λ, HK022, P1 vir, P2, and rII mutants of phage T4. After mutagenic treatment, four isolates were obtained for their inability to exclude T4rII. It is shown that this mutation, designated exc, is located in the prophage HK239, and that, it also abolishes the exclusion of phages λ, HK022, P1 vir, and P2.

Abstract: Let ( E , ) be a topological vector space with a positive cone C. Jameson (3) says that C given an open decomposition on E if V ∩ C − V ∩ C is a -neighbourhood of 0 whenever V is a -neighbourhood of 0. The concept of open decompositions plays an important role in the theory of ordered topological vector spaces; see (3). It is clear that C is generating if C gives an open decomposition on E; the converse is true for Banach spaces with a closed cone, by Ando's theorem (cf. (1) or (9)). Therefore the following question arises naturally: (Q 1) Let ( E , ) be a locally convex space with a positive cone C. What condition on is necessary and sufficient for the cone C to give an open decomposition on E ?

Abstract: It has been found by mass spectrometric studies that the so-called ‘1:1-adduct’ formed by N-( nbutyl)maleimide and benzaldazine, is in fact a solid mixture of one part bis-imide L and one part benzaldazine. Bis-imide L is one of the three stereoisomeric products obtained by the addition of two mole of N-( n-butyl)malemide and one mole of benzaldazine. The three stereoisomeric bis-imides gave identical mass spectra. Mass spectra of bis-imide M and bis-imide M- d2 are discussed, and confirm the proposed structures of perhydroprazolo-pyrazole derivatives for these 1:2-adducts.
