TL;DR: A backstepping based control design for a class of nonlinear systems in strict-feedback form with arbitrary uncertainty is developed and is able to eliminate the problem of "explosion of complexity" inherent in the existing method.
Abstract: The dynamic surface control (DSC) technique was developed recently by Swaroop et al. This technique simplified the backstepping design for the control of nonlinear systems in strict-feedback form by overcoming the problem of "explosion of complexity." It was later extended to adaptive backstepping design for nonlinear systems with linearly parameterized uncertainty. In this paper, by incorporating this design technique into a neural network based adaptive control design framework, we have developed a backstepping based control design for a class of nonlinear systems in strict-feedback form with arbitrary uncertainty. Our development is able to eliminate the problem of "explosion of complexity" inherent in the existing method. In addition, a stability analysis is given which shows that our control law can guarantee the uniformly ultimate boundedness of the solution of the closed-loop system, and make the tracking error arbitrarily small.

TL;DR: This scheme can remove salt-and-pepper-noise with a noise level as high as 90% and show a significant improvement compared to those restored by using just nonlinear filters or regularization methods only.
Abstract: This paper proposes a two-phase scheme for removing salt-and-pepper impulse noise. In the first phase, an adaptive median filter is used to identify pixels which are likely to be contaminated by noise (noise candidates). In the second phase, the image is restored using a specialized regularization method that applies only to those selected noise candidates. In terms of edge preservation and noise suppression, our restored images show a significant improvement compared to those restored by using just nonlinear filters or regularization methods only. Our scheme can remove salt-and-pepper-noise with a noise level as high as 90%.

TL;DR: In this article, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) have been implicated in the late-phase long-term potentiation (L-LTP) process.
Abstract: Long-term memory is thought to be mediated by protein synthesis-dependent, late-phase long-term potentiation (L-LTP). Two secretory proteins, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), have been implicated in this process, but their relationship is unclear. Here we report that tPA, by activating the extracellular protease plasmin, converts the precursor proBDNF to the mature BDNF (mBDNF), and that such conversion is critical for L-LTP expression in mouse hippocampus. Moreover, application of mBDNF is sufficient to rescue L-LTP when protein synthesis is inhibited, which suggests that mBDNF is a key protein synthesis product for L-LTP expression.

TL;DR: Light is shed on the genetic architecture and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying BMD variation and fracture susceptibility and within the RANK-RANKL-OPG, mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, endochondral ossification and Wnt signaling pathways.
Abstract: Bone mineral density (BMD) is the most widely used predictor of fracture risk. We performed the largest meta-analysis to date on lumbar spine and femoral neck BMD, including 17 genome-wide association studies and 32,961 individuals of European and east Asian ancestry. We tested the top BMD-associated markers for replication in 50,933 independent subjects and for association with risk of low-trauma fracture in 31,016 individuals with a history of fracture (cases) and 102,444 controls. We identified 56 loci (32 new) associated with BMD at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10(-8)). Several of these factors cluster within the RANK-RANKL-OPG, mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, endochondral ossification and Wnt signaling pathways. However, we also discovered loci that were localized to genes not known to have a role in bone biology. Fourteen BMD-associated loci were also associated with fracture risk (P < 5 × 10(-4), Bonferroni corrected), of which six reached P < 5 × 10(-8), including at 18p11.21 (FAM210A), 7q21.3 (SLC25A13), 11q13.2 (LRP5), 4q22.1 (MEPE), 2p16.2 (SPTBN1) and 10q21.1 (DKK1). These findings shed light on the genetic architecture and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying BMD variation and fracture susceptibility.

TL;DR: Extensive experiments on the 3D detection benchmark of KITTI dataset show that the proposed architecture outperforms state-of-the-art methods with remarkable margins by using only point cloud as input.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose PointRCNN for 3D object detection from raw point cloud. The whole framework is composed of two stages: stage-1 for the bottom-up 3D proposal generation and stage-2 for refining proposals in the canonical coordinates to obtain the final detection results. Instead of generating proposals from RGB image or projecting point cloud to bird's view or voxels as previous methods do, our stage-1 sub-network directly generates a small number of high-quality 3D proposals from point cloud in a bottom-up manner via segmenting the point cloud of the whole scene into foreground points and background. The stage-2 sub-network transforms the pooled points of each proposal to canonical coordinates to learn better local spatial features, which is combined with global semantic features of each point learned in stage-1 for accurate box refinement and confidence prediction. Extensive experiments on the 3D detection benchmark of KITTI dataset show that our proposed architecture outperforms state-of-the-art methods with remarkable margins by using only point cloud as input.
