Abstract: Tensors, or multidimensional arrays, are data structures that can naturally represent visual data of multiple dimensions. Inherently able to efficiently capture structured, latent semantic spaces and high-order interactions, tensors have a long history of applications in a wide span of computer vision problems. With the advent of the deep learning paradigm shift in computer vision, tensors have become even more fundamental. Indeed, essential ingredients in modern deep learning architectures, such as convolutions and attention mechanisms, can readily be considered as tensor mappings. In effect, tensor methods are increasingly finding significant applications in deep learning, including the design of memory and compute efficient network architectures, improving robustness to random noise and adversarial attacks, and aiding the theoretical understanding of deep networks. This article provides an in-depth and practical review of tensors and tensor methods in the context of representation learning and deep learning, with a particular focus on visual data analysis and computer vision applications. Concretely, besides fundamental work in tensor-based visual data analysis methods, we focus on recent developments that have brought on a gradual increase of tensor methods, especially in deep learning architectures, and their implications in computer vision applications. To further enable the newcomer to grasp such concepts quickly, we provide companion Python notebooks, covering key aspects of the paper and implementing them, step-by-step with TensorLy.

Abstract: Following the first imported case in a tourist in Cyprus on 2 June 2009, the influenza A(H1N1)v virus has spread on the island affecting mainly young adults and children. We describe here the first 45 cases in children. Fever, cough, rhinorrhoea and sore throat were the most common symptoms of infection. Half of the children had fever for one day or only for a few hours. Five children were hospitalised, and overall their symptoms were mild. Adherence to oseltamivir treatment was very high, with low frequency of gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and vomiting. Camping places and summer schools played a significant role in spreading the infection among children of school age.

Abstract: . Recent and future changes in temperature and precipitation climate extremes are estimated using the Hadley Centre PRECIS ("Providing REgional Climates for Impacts Studies") climate model for the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region. The area of interest is considered vulnerable to extreme climate events as there is evidence for a temperature rise while precipitation tends to decline, suggesting likely effects on vital socioeconomic sectors in the region. Observations have been obtained for the recent period (1961–1990) and used to evaluate the model output. The spatial distribution of recent temporal trends in temperature indicates strong increasing in minimum temperature over the eastern Balkan Peninsula, Turkey and the Arabian Peninsula. The rate of warming reaches 0.4–0.5 °C decade−1 in a large part of the domain, while warming is expected to be strongest in summer (0.6–0.7 °C decade−1) in the eastern Balkans and western Turkey. The trends in annual and summer maximum temperature are estimated at approximately 0.5 and 0.6 °C decade−1 respectively. Recent estimates do not indicate statistically significant trends in precipitation except for individual sub-regions. Results indicate a future warming trend for the study area over the last 30 years of the 21st century. Trends are estimated to be positive and statistically significant in nearly the entire region. The annual trend patterns for both minimum and maximum temperature show warming rates of approximately 0.4–0.6 °C decade−1, with pronounced warming over the Middle Eastern countries. Summer temperatures reveal a gradual warming (0.5–0.9 °C decade−1) over much of the region. The model projects drying trends by 5–30% in annual precipitation towards the end of the 21st century, with the number of wet days decreasing at the rate of 10–30 days year−1, while heavy precipitation is likely to decrease in the high-elevation areas by 15 days year−1.

Abstract: This study concerns the determination of beta-thalassemia alleles and other hemoglobin variants in 82 patients from Syria. We have characterized 146 chromosomes and found 17 different beta-thalassemia mutations, and one beta-globin chain variant that gives rise to the abnormal Hb S. The eight most common beta-thalassemia mutations were the IVS-I-110 (G-->A), IVS-I-1 (G-->A), codon 5 (-CT), -30 (T-->A), codon 39 (C-->T), IVS-I-6 (T-->C), IVS-II-1 (G-->A), and codon 15 (TGG-->TAG). These mutations accounted for almost 75% of the total beta-thalassemia chromosomes. We identified 34 different genotypes with a high level of homozygosity. The various beta-thalassemia mutations were characterized using gene amplification with specific oligonucleotide primers, restriction enzyme analysis, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and direct sequencing. By combining these three approaches we were able to detect mutations in almost 90% of the chromosomes studied. Our findings provide a sound foundation on which to base a preventive program for thalassemia and we believe that the data that we present will facilitate the improvement of medical services such as carrier screening, genetic counseling, and prenatal diagnosis. Furthermore a detailed knowledge of the molecular pathology of beta-thalassemia will strongly improve the prenatal diagnosis services in Syria.
