TL;DR: A multiply twinned particle model is proposed by the present author, and the appearance of the 111 spots and the dark field image contrasts can satisfactorily be explained by this model.
Abstract: The orientation and structure of gold particles formed by evaporation on rocksalt cleaved in ultrahigh vacuum have been studied at various stages of the nucleation and growth process. Besides four 200 and twenty-four 220 spots which indicate the presence of the (001) orientation and (111) orientation respectively, twenty-four abnormal 111 spots have been observed in electron diffraction patterns taken at earlier stages of growth, and various unusual contrasts have been observed in dark field electron micrographs using one of 111 spots. A multiply twinned particle model is proposed by the present author, and the appearance of the 111 spots and the dark field image contrasts can satisfactorily be explained by this model. With increasing thickness particles with the (111) orientation and without the multiple twinning exclusively grow up, while multiply twinned particles and those with the (001) orientation seem to stop their growth; and a continuous gold film with the (111) fibrous structure is formed at a t...

TL;DR: Key parameters associated with conformation of the protein solubilized from inclusion bodies, change in conformation and flexibility or solubility of proteins during refolding upon reduction of denaturant concentration, and the effect of small molecule additives on refolding and aggregation of the proteins are reviewed.

TL;DR: In this article, the synthesis of continuous β-SiC fibres by a new process: the conversion of organometallic polymers to inorganic substances was studied, and the transformation process and the structure and mechanical properties of these fibres were studied.
Abstract: MUCH work has been done on preparing heat-resistant silicon carbide materials in fibrous form, since plastics or metals can be reinforced with them to obtain very heat-resistant material of great mechanical strength. SiC whiskers1 are, however, impractical because of their shortness (several mm), their non-uniform diameter and high cost of production. SiC-on-W (ref. 2) and SiC-on-C (ref. 3) filaments have been produced by chemical vapour methods. These coated filaments are more expensive, and the treatment for making such composite materials requires careful control. We report here on the synthesis of continuous β-SiC fibres by a new process: the conversion of organometallic polymers to inorganic substances. We have studied the transformation process and the structure and mechanical properties of these fibres.

TL;DR: These studies have enlightened us as to the paracrine roles of GDF-9 as well as the normal steps of granulosa cell and theca cell growth and differentiation within ovarian follicles.
Abstract: Growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF-9), a secreted member of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily, is expressed at high levels in the mammalian oocyte beginning at the type 3a primary follicle stage. We have previously demonstrated that GDF-9-deficient female mice are infertile because of an early block in folliculogenesis at the type 3b primary follicle stage. To address the molecular defects that result from the absence of GDF-9, we have analyzed the expression of several important ovarian marker genes. The major findings of our studies are as follows: 1) There are no detectable signals around GDF-9-deficient follicles for several theca cell layer markers [i.e. 17α-hydroxylase, LH receptor (LHR), and c-kit, the receptor for kit ligand]. This demonstrates that in the absence of GDF-9, the follicles are incompetent to emit a signal that recruits theca cell precursors to surround the follicle; 2) The primary follicles of GDF-9-deficient mice demonstrate an up-regulation of kit ligand and inhibin-α...
