TL;DR: In this paper, a theory for the resonant scattering mechanism has been developed by considering the splitting of the Mn $4p$ levels due to the orbital ordering, concomitant with a structural phase transition.
Abstract: Dipole resonant x-ray scattering from ordered Mn $3d$ orbitals in $\mathrm{LaMn}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ has been observed near the Mn $K$-absorption edge. The polarization of the scattered photons is rotated from $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ to ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ and the azimuthal angle dependence shows a characteristic twofold symmetry. A theory for the resonant scattering mechanism has been developed by considering the splitting of the Mn $4p$ levels due to the Mn $3d$ orbital ordering. The order parameter of the orbital ordering decreases above the N\'eel temperature ( ${T}_{N}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}140\mathrm{K}$) and disappears at ${T}_{O}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}780\mathrm{K}$, concomitant with a structural phase transition.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the relationship between ambulatory systolic blood pressure and cardiovascular mortality is not U-shaped or J-shaped, and that nighttime blood pressure has better prognostic value than daytime blood pressure.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to elucidate the long-term prognostic significance of ambulatory blood pressure. Ambulatory and casual blood pressure values were obtained from 1332 subjects (872 women and 460 men) aged ≥40 years from the general population of a rural Japanese community. Survival was then followed for 14 370 patient years and analyzed by a Cox hazard model adjusted for possible confounding factors. There were 72 cardiovascular deaths during the 10.8-year follow-up. The relationship between 24-hour systolic blood pressure and the cardiovascular mortality risk was U-shaped in the first 5 years, then changed to J-shaped over the rest of the 10.8-year follow-up. After censoring the first 2 years of data, the risk flattened until it again increased for the fifth quintile of 24-hour systolic blood pressure for the 10.8-year follow-up period. For 24-hour diastolic blood pressure, the J-shaped relationship remained unchanged, regardless of follow-up duration and censoring. Ambulatory systolic blood pressure values consistently showed stronger predictive power for cardiovascular mortality risk than did casual systolic blood pressure in the 10.8-year follow-up data, whereas such relationships became more marked after censoring the first 2 years. When nighttime and daytime systolic blood pressure values were simultaneously included in the same Cox model, only nighttime blood pressure significantly predicted the cardiovascular mortality risk for the 10.8-year follow-up data. We conclude that the relationship between ambulatory systolic blood pressure and cardiovascular mortality is not U-shaped or J-shaped, and that nighttime blood pressure has better prognostic value than daytime blood pressure.

TL;DR: Spintronics is one of the emerging research fields in nanotechnology and has been growing very rapidly as mentioned in this paper, which has led to the discovery of giant magnetoresistance in 1988, which utilized spin-polarized electron transport across a non-magnetic metallic layer.
Abstract: Spintronics is one of the emerging research fields in nanotechnology and has been growing very rapidly. Studies of spintronics were started after the discovery of giant magnetoresistance in 1988, which utilized spin-polarized electron transport across a non-magnetic metallic layer. Within 10 years, this discovery had been implemented into hard disk drives, the most common storage media, followed by recognition through the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics 19 years later. We have never experienced such fast development in any scientific field. Spintronics research is now moving into second-generation spin dynamics and beyond. In this review, we first examine the historical advances in spintronics together with the background physics, and then describe major device applications.

TL;DR: These transgenic mice proved to be powerful tools for isolating living germ cells at various developmental stages to study their nature and to isolate new genes.
Abstract: The Pic-1, Oct-1,2, Unc-86 (POU) transcription factor Oct-4 is specifically expressed in the germ cell line, and a previous study has indicated that the expression of the lacZ gene inserted into an 18 kb genomic fragment encompassing the Oct-4 gene can come close to mimicking the endogenous embryonic expression pattern of Oct-4 in transgenic mice. In the present study transgenic mice expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) in the germ cell line were generated using the same Oct-4 genomic fragments and the expression pattern was analyzed in detail through all stages of germ cell development. The GFP expressing primordial germ cells were first detected as early as 8.0 days post-coitum (d.p.c.; early head fold stage) at the base of the allantois in living embryos. The GFP expression was thereafter found in both male and female germ cells at all developmental stages except in male germ cells after differentiating into type A spermatogonia in the postnatal testis. There was also a lower level of expression in female germ cells in the prophase of the first meiotic division. These transgenic mice therefore proved to be powerful tools for isolating living germ cells at various developmental stages to study their nature and to isolate new genes.

TL;DR: In this article, the degree of penetration, D p, was introduced as an index to describe the severity of contact and a wear mode diagram was developed to show the possible region for each wear mode of cutting, wedge forming or ploughing with parameters of D p and the shearing strength at the contact interface.
