Abstract: The HERMES experiment is collecting data on inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarised positrons from polarised targets of H, D, and 3 He. These data give information on the spin structure of the nucleon. This paper describes the forward angle spectrometer built for this purpose. The spectrometer includes numerous tracking chambers (micro-strip gas chambers, drift and proportional chambers) in front of and behind a 1.3 T.m magnetic field, as well as an extensive set of detectors for particle identification (a lead-glass calorimeter, a pre-shower detector, a transition radiation detector, and a threshold Cherenkov detector). Two of the main features of the spectrometer are its good acceptance and identification of both positrons and hadrons, in particular pions. These characteristics, together with the purity of the targets, are allowing HERMES to make unique contributions to the understanding of how the spins of the quarks contribute to the spin of the nucleon.

Abstract: α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrin derivatives bearing a p-(dimethylamino)benzoyl (DMAB) moiety (DMAB-αCyD, DMAB-βCyD, and DMAB-γCyD, respectively) have been synthesized as fluorescent sensors of molecular recognition. These compounds show dual fluorescence emission arising from normal planar (NP) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) exited states, and among them strong TICT emission was observed for DMAB-βCyD. The induced circular dichroism spectra of the derivatives suggest that only DMAB-βCyD among other derivatives binds the DMAB moiety into its own cavity, forming an intramolecular inclusion complex. This conformation was confirmed by the analysis of its 1 H-NMR data and was related to its strong TICT emission

Abstract: Lead magnesium niobate and other relaxor ferroelectrics are promising transducer materials for use as active elements in adaptive optic systems and similar applications. These ceramics are dominantly in the paraelectric phase, and dimension control is obtained through the high intrinsic quadratic electrostrictive effect. Since stable ferroelectric domain structures do not occur, the problems of dimensional creep and non-reproducibility (aging and de-aging effects) of the conventional poled piezoelectric ceramic are largely eliminated. Suitably chosen compositions in the Pb3MgNb2O9-PbTiO3 family give electrostriction strains ten times larger than those of conventional BaTiO3-based ceramics. Low expansion coefficients are an added advantage for thermal stability.

Abstract: Parthenogenesis in the mouse is embryonic lethal partly because of imprinted genes that are expressed only from the paternal genome. In a systematic screen using subtraction hybridization between cDNAs from normal and parthenogenetic embryos, we initially identified two apparently novel imprinted genes, Peg1 and Peg3. Peg1 (paternally expressed gene 1) or Mest, the first imprinted gene found on the mouse chromosome 6, may contribute to the lethality of parthenogenones and of embryos with a maternal duplication for the proximal chromosome 6. Peg1/Mest is widely expressed in mesodermal tissues and belongs to the alpha/beta hydrolase fold family. A similar approach with androgenones can be used to identify imprinted genes that are expressed from the maternal genome only.
