Abstract: Photocatalytic reaction rate (R) is determined by the multiplication of light absorption capability (α) and quantum efficiency (QE); however, these two parameters generally have trade-off relations. Thus, increasing α without decreasing QE remains a challenging issue for developing efficient photocatalysts with high R. Herein, using Fe(III) ions grafted Fe(III) doped TiO2 as a model system, we present a novel method for developing visible-light photocatalysts with efficient R, utilizing the concept of energy level matching between surface-grafted Fe(III) ions as co-catalysts and bulk-doped Fe(III) ions as visible-light absorbers. Photogenerated electrons in the doped Fe(III) states under visible-light efficiently transfer to the surface grafted Fe(III) ions co-catalysts, as the doped Fe(III) ions in bulk produced energy levels below the conduction band of TiO2, which match well with the potential of Fe3+/Fe2+ redox couple in the surface grafted Fe(III) ions. Abstract: Based on 1 yr of field measurements, the diurnal, seasonal, and annual fluxes of energy and carbon dioxide (CO2) at a residential area of Tokyo, Japan, are described. The major findings are as follows. 1) The storage heat flux G in the daytime had little seasonal variation, irrespective of significant seasonal change of net all-wave radiation Rn. 2) The latent heat flux in the summer daytime was large despite the small areal fraction of natural coverage (trees and bare soil). The estimated local latent heat flux per unit natural coverage was 2 times the available energy (Rn − G), which indicates that the “oasis effect” was significant. 3) The CO2 flux was always upward throughout the year and the magnitude was larger in winter, mainly because of an increase of fossil fuel consumption. The annual total CO2 flux was 6 times the downward CO2 flux at a typical temperate deciduous forest.

Abstract: The whisker method using anisole solvent was developed for effective production of high-aspect-ratio poly (3-alkylthiophene) (P3AT) nanofibers, and alkyl chain length dependence on nanofiber formation and their properties were fully investigated. The nanofibers have an anisotropic cross section of 3−4 nm height and 24−27 nm width, which slightly increase with the alkyl chain length, and the aspect ratio reaches 100−1000. The nanofibers consist of more than 104 parallel stacks of the extended polymer backbones along the nanofiber long axis and of 2−3 laminated layers of the polymer backbones separated by alkyl side chains. The nanofiber formation originates from quasi-one-dimensional crystallization of P3ATs induced by both an attractive π−π* interaction between polymer backbones and the crystallization of alkyl side chains.
