Abstract: Two types of photomodulation of orientations of liquid crystals (LCs) are reviewed: 1) order–disorder phase transitions of LCs induced by photochemical reactions of photochromic molecules and 2) order–order alignment change of LCs (change in LC directors) induced by photochemical reactions or without photochemical events. Both processes produce a large refractive-index modulation, which forms the basis of a range of photonic applications. Various modes of photomodulation of orientations of LCs with plausible mechanisms and their possible applications in photonics are described.

Abstract: The earliest and the most critical stage in VLSI layout design is the placement. The background is the rectangle packing problem: given a set of rectangular modules of arbitrary sizes, place them without overlap on a plane within a rectangle of minimum area. Since the variety of the packing is uncountably infinite, the key issue for successful optimization is the introduction of a finite solution space which includes an optimal solution. This paper proposes such a solution space where each packing is represented by a pair of module name sequences, called a sequence-pair. Searching this space by simulated annealing, hundreds of modules have been packed efficiently as demonstrated. For applications to VLSI layout, we attack the biggest MCNC benchmark ami49 with a conventional wiring area estimation method, and obtain a highly promising placement.

Abstract: Spaceborne digital elevation models (DEMs) are a fundamental input for many geoscience studies, but they still include nonnegligible height errors Here we introduce a high-accuracy global DEM at 3″ resolution (~90 m at the equator) by eliminating major error components from existing DEMs We separated absolute bias, stripe noise, speckle noise, and tree height bias using multiple satellite data sets and filtering techniques After the error removal, land areas mapped with ±2 m or better vertical accuracy were increased from 39% to 58% Significant improvements were found in flat regions where height errors larger than topography variability, and landscapes such as river networks and hill-valley structures, became clearly represented We found the topography slope of previous DEMs was largely distorted in most of world major floodplains (eg, Ganges, Nile, Niger, and Mekong) and swamp forests (eg, Amazon, Congo, and Vasyugan) The newly developed DEM will enhance many geoscience applications which are terrain dependent
