Abstract: Oxygen reduction characteristics of graphite electrodes modified with aggregated cobalt-porphyrins heat-treated at various temperatures and then impregnated in Nafion polymer were investigated systematically. The aggregated cobalt-porphyrin compound was adsorbed on graphite powder and then heat-treated at various temperatures ranging from 200 through 1200 °C. The catalysts were evaluated for electroreduction performances of oxygen on modified electrodes in sulfuric acid solutions. The electrocatalytic performances of catalysts as measured in rotating ring-disk electrodes showed that the most effective catalytic activity for oxygen reduction was attained for the aggregated cobalt-porphyrin compounds on graphite powder heat-treated at temperatures between 600 and 800 °C. The surface concentration of Co and N as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy increased as the heat-treatment temperature was increased up to 800 °C. The electrochemical performance of pyrolyzed cobalt-porphyrin catalysts changed in parallel with the surface concentration of Co and N. In the temperature range 600-800 °C, it appeared that the increased catalytic activity originated from the well-dispersed Co-N 4 moiety or from fragments of the original molecules still retaining the cobalt bound to nitrogen atoms. In the higher temperature region, Co-N 4 bonds were no longer detected, and the presence of cobalt in the metallic states (β-Co) in the catalysts was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. From the results of the stability tests, the pyrolyzed cobalt porphyrin electrode systems were found to be more stable than the nonheat-treated catalysts.

Abstract: Bismuth crystal is known for its remarkable properties resulting from particular electronic states, e. g., the Shubnikov-de Haas effect and the de Haas-van Alphen effect. Above all, the large diamagnetism of bismuth had been a long-standing puzzle soon after the establishment of quantum mechanics, which had been resolved eventually in 1970 based on the effective Hamiltonian derived by Wolff as due to the interband effects of a magnetic field in the presence of a large spin-orbit interaction. This Hamiltonian is essentially the same as the Dirac Hamiltonian, but with spatial anisotropy and an effective velocity much smaller than the light velocity. This paper reviews recent progress in the theoretical understanding of transport and optical properties, such as the weak-field Hall effect together with the spin Hall effect, and ac conductivity, of a system described by the Wolff Hamiltonian and its isotropic version with a special interest of exploring possible relationship with orbital magnetism. It is shown that there exist a fundamental relationship between spin Hall conductivity and orbital susceptibility in the insulating state on one hand, and the possibility of fully spin-polarized electric current in magneto-optics. Experimental tests of these interesting features have been proposed.

Abstract: Sodium-doped carbon nitride nanotubes (Na
x
-CNNTs) were prepared by a green and simple two-step method and applied in photocatalytic water splitting for the first time. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) element mapping and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements confirm that sodium was successfully introduced in the carbon nitride nanotubes (CNNTs), and the intrinsic structure of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was also maintained in the products. Moreover, the porous structure of the CNNTs leads to relatively large specific surface areas. Photocatalytic tests indicate that the porous tubular structure and Na+ doping can synergistically enhance the hydrogen evolution rate under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation in the presence of sacrificial agents, leading to a hydrogen evolution rate as high as 143 μmol·h−1 (20 mg catalyst). Moreover, other alkali metal-doped CNNTs, such as Li
x
-CNNTs and K
x
-CNNTs, were tested; both materials were found to enhance the hydrogen evolution rate, but to a lower extent compared with the Na
x
-CNNTs. This highlights the general applicability of the present method to prepare alkali metal-doped CNNTs; a preliminary mechanism for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction in the Na
x
-CNNTs is also proposed.
