Abstract: The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated
by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the
high-energy universe by performing high-resolution, high-throughput spectroscopy with moderate angular
resolution. ASTRO-H covers very wide energy range from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. ASTRO-H allows a combination
of wide band X-ray spectroscopy (5-80 keV) provided by multilayer coating, focusing hard X-ray
mirrors and hard X-ray imaging detectors, and high energy-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy (0.3-12 keV)
provided by thin-foil X-ray optics and a micro-calorimeter array. The mission will also carry an X-ray CCD
camera as a focal plane detector for a soft X-ray telescope (0.4-12 keV) and a non-focusing soft gamma-ray
detector (40-600 keV) . The micro-calorimeter system is developed by an international collaboration led
by ISAS/JAXA and NASA. The simultaneous broad bandpass, coupled with high spectral resolution of
ΔE ~7 eV provided by the micro-calorimeter will enable a wide variety of important science themes to be
pursued.

Abstract: Highly crystalline TiO2 nanostructures were prepared through a facile inorganic acid-assisted hydrothermal treatment of hexagonal-structured assemblies of nanocrystalline titiania templated by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (Hex-ncTiO2/CTAB Nanoskeleton) as starting materials. All samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The influence of hydrochloric acid concentration on the morphology, crystalline and the formation of the nanostructures were investigated. We found that the morphology and crystalline phase strongly depended on the hydrochloric acid concentrations. More importantly, crystalline phase was closely related to the morphology of TiO2 nanostructure. Nanoparticles were polycrystalline anatase phase, and aligned nanorods were single crystalline rutile phase. Possible formation mechanisms of TiO2 nanostructures with various crystalline phases and morphologies were proposed.

Abstract: Two-dimensional monoclinic WO(3) nanoplates with high specific surface areas are synthesized through a novel conversion process using tungstate-based inorganic-organic hybrid micro/nanobelts as precursors. The process developed involves a topochemical transformation of tungstate-based inorganic-organic hybrid belts into WO(3) nanoplates via an intermediate product of H(2)WO(4) nanoplates, utilizing the similarity of the W-O octahedral layers in both H(2)WO(4) and WO(3). The as-obtained WO(3) nanoplates show a single-crystalline nanostructure with the smallest side along the [001] direction. The WO(3) nanoplates are 200-500 nm x 200-500 nm x 10-30 nm in size, and their specific surface areas are up to 180 m(2) g(-1). Photocatalytic measurements of visible-light-driven oxidation of water for O(2) generation in the presence of Ag(+) ions indicate that the activity of the as-obtained WO(3) nanoplates is one order of magnitude higher than that of commercially available WO(3) powders.

Abstract: 1. Our previous studies revealed that the immunosuppressive agent, FTY720, mainly induces mitochondria-involved apoptosis in some types of cancer cells, since Bcl-2 overexpression prevents the FTY720-induction of apoptotic stimuli. Furthermore, FTY720 induces G0/G1 cell cycle arrest. The present study further examines the correlation between intracellular signaling kinases with FTY720-induced mitochondria-involved apoptosis. 2. Human T cell leukemia Jurkat was exposed to FTY720. Dephosphorylation of Akt occurred in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. FTY720 also induced Bad (Ser(136)) and ribosomal p70S6 kinase (p70(S6k)) (Thr(389)) dephosphorylation. 3. FTY720-induced Akt dephosphorylation was not because of Akt upstream phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase (PI 3-kinase) pathway inhibition. 4. FTY720 also induced Akt dephosphorylation in human B cell leukemia BALL-1. BALL-1 cells were resistant to FTY720-induced apoptosis. 5. Okadaic acid (OA) inhibited the FTY720-induced dephosphorylation of Akt and p70(S6k), suggesting that FTY720 promotes Ser/Thr protein phosphatase (PP) activity. 6. OA partially inhibited FTY720-induced caspase-3 activation. 7. PP2A or PP2A-like phosphatase was temporarily activated in cells exposed to FTY720. In addition, FTY720 activated purified PP2A (ABC). 8. Overall, the results suggest that FTY720 activated PP2A or PP2A-like phosphatase and dephosphorylated Akt pathway factors resulting in the enhancement of apoptosis via mitochondria.
