TL;DR: A TH-17 cell–associated microRNA, miR-326, is identified whose expression was highly correlated with disease severity in patients with multiple sclerosis and mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, and its overexpression led to more TH- 17 cells and severe EAE.
Abstract: Interleukin 17 (IL-17)-producing T helper cells (T H -17 cells) are increasingly recognized as key participants in various autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis. Although sets of transcription factors and cytokines are known to regulate T H -17 differentiation, the role of noncoding RNA is poorly understood. Here we identify a T H -17 cell–associated microRNA, miR-326, whose expression was highly correlated with disease severity in patients with multiple sclerosis and mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). In vivo silencing of miR-326 resulted in fewer T H -17 cells and mild EAE, and its overexpression led to more T H -17 cells and severe EAE. We also found that miR-326 promoted T H -17 differentiation by targeting Ets-1, a negative regulator of T H -17 differentiation. Our data show a critical role for microRNA in T H -17 differentiation and the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis.

TL;DR: The thermally-reduced GO showed p-type semiconducting behavior in ambient conditions and was responsive to low-concentration NO2 and NH3 gases diluted in air at room temperature and can be attributed mainly to the electron transfer between the reduced GO and adsorbed gaseous molecules.
Abstract: We demonstrated high-performance gas sensors based on graphene oxide (GO) sheets partially reduced via low-temperature thermal treatments. Hydrophilic graphene oxide sheets uniformly suspended in water were first dispersed onto gold interdigitated electrodes. The partial reduction of the GO sheets was then achieved through low-temperature, multi-step annealing (100, 200, and 300 ◦ C) or one-step heating (200 ◦ C) of the device in argon flow at atmospheric pressure. The electrical conductance of GO was measured after each heating cycle to interpret the level of reduction. The thermally-reduced GO showed p-type semiconducting behavior in ambient conditions and was responsive to low-concentration NO2 and NH3 gases diluted in air at room temperature. The sensitivity can be attributed mainly to the electron transfer between the reduced GO and adsorbed gaseous molecules (NO2/NH3). Additionally, the contact between GO and the Au electrode is likely to contribute to the overall sensing response because of the adsorbates-induced Schottky barrier variation. A simplified model is used to explain the experimental observations. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

TL;DR: The 16S rRNA gene clone library demonstrated that Clostridia, beta-Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant microbial community when the current anaerobic fermentation system was operated at pH 8.0, which resulted in the greatest propionic acid content in the fermentative VFAs.
Abstract: Volatile fatty acids (VFAs), the carbon source of biological nutrients removal, can be produced by waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic fermentation. However, because of high protein content and low carbon to nitrogen mass ratio (C/N) of WAS, the production of VFAs, especially propionic acid, a more preferred VFA than acetic acid for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), is limited. After the addition of carbohydrate (rice was used as the model matter) to the WAS anaerobic fermentation system to balance the C/N ratio, the effect of pH on WAS protein conversion and VFAs production was investigated in this paper. Experimental results showed that the addition of carbohydrate matter caused a remarkable enhancement of WAS protein conversion and protease activity, and an apparent synergistic effect between WAS and carbohydrate matter was observed. The study of pH effect revealed that pH influenced not only the total VFAs production but the percentage of individual VFA. The maximal VFAs production (52...

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated whether investor sentiment affects the cross-section of stock returns in China A-share market and found that the sensitivity of stock return to sentiment changes is different.
Abstract: We investigate whether investor sentiment affects the cross-section of stock returns in China A-share market. The evidence shows that the sensitivity of stock returns to sentiment changes is different. When an index of investor sentiment takes high values, low tangible assets, high Debt-asset ratio, and non-dividend-paying stocks earn relatively higher returns, when sentiment is low,the aforementioned categories of stocks earn relatively lower returns. When sentiment is high,low-price,unprofitable and high book-market ratio stocks earn relatively higher returns and vice versa, but which is insignificant. The capitalization, volatility and institutional ownership appear to have no significant cross-section effect of investor sentiment on its characteristic Portfolio return.

TL;DR: Six high-resolution genome-wide maps of Saccharomyces cerevisiae nucleosome positions from multiple labs and detection platforms are compiled, and new insights are reported.
Abstract: Nucleosomes have position-specific functions in controlling gene expression. A complete systematic genome-wide reference map of absolute and relative nucleosome positions is needed to minimize potential confusion when referring to the function of individual nucleosomes (or nucleosome-free regions) across datasets. We compiled six high-resolution genome-wide maps of Saccharomyces cerevisiae nucleosome positions from multiple labs and detection platforms, and report new insights. Data downloads, reference position assignment software, queries, and a visualization browser are available online http://atlas.bx.psu.edu/.

TL;DR: Experimental and theoretical results on an acoustic metamaterial that exhibits a negative effective modulus in a frequency range from 0 to 450 Hz are presented and a theory is provided to explain the experimental results.
Abstract: We present experimental and theoretical results on an acoustic metamaterial that exhibits a negative effective modulus in a frequency range from 0 to 450 Hz. A one-dimensional acoustic metamaterial with an array of side holes on a tube was fabricated. We observed that acoustic waves above 450 Hz propagated well in this structure, but no sound below 450 Hz passed through. The frequency characteristics of the metamaterial has the same form as that of the permittivity in metals due to the plasma oscillation. We also provide a theory to explain the experimental results.

TL;DR: Sr-doped PbZrO3 antiferroelectric (AFE) thin films have been fabricated on the platinum-buffered silicon substrates via the sol-gel technique.
Abstract: Sr-doped PbZrO3 antiferroelectric (AFE) thin films have been fabricated on the platinum-buffered silicon substrates via the sol–gel technique. The temperature-dependent dielectric properties results indicated that the AFE phase was stabilized for the Sr-modified PbZrO3 thin films with a Curie temperature of 251°C. The recoverable energy density and energy efficiency of the Sr-doped PbZrO3 thin films were enhanced by the doping of strontium. Compared with the pure PbZrO3 AFE thin films, the performance against fatigue of the Sr-doped PbZrO3 thin films were also improved greatly.

TL;DR: In this article, satellite and conventional observations support an alternative hypothesis which considers monsoon as a manifestation of seasonal migration of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and, hence, a climate system of the global scale.
Abstract: Monsoon is now considered as a global system rather than regional phenomena only. For over 300 years, monsoon has been viewed as a gigantic land-sea breeze, but now satellite and conventional observations support an alternative hypothesis which considers monsoon as a manifestation of seasonal migration of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and, hence, a climate system of the global scale. As a low-latitude climate system, monsoon exists over all continents but Antarctica, and through all the geological history at least since the Phenorozoic. The time is ripe for systematical studies of monsoon variations in space and time. As evidenced by the geological records, the global monsoon is controlled by the Wilson cycle on the tectonic time scale (106–108 a). A “Mega-continent” produces “Mega-monsoon”, and its breakdown leads to weakening of the monsoon intensity. On the time scales of 104-105 a, the global monsoon displays the precessional cycles of ∼20 ka and eccentricity cycles of 100- and 400-ka, i.e. the orbital cycles. On the time scales of 103 a and below, the global monsoon intensity is modulated by solar cycles and other factors. The cyclicity of global monsoon represents one of the fundamental factors responsible for variations in the Earth surface system as well as for the environmental changes of the human society. The 400-ka long eccentricity cycles of the global monsoon is likened to “heartbeat” of the Earth system, and the precession cycle of the global monsoon was responsible for the collapse of several Asian and African ancient cultures at ∼4000 years ago, whereas the Solar cycles led to the demise of the Maya civilization about a thousand years ago. Therefore, paleoclimatology should be focused not only on the high-latitude processes centered at ice cap variations, but also on the low-latitude processes such as monsoons, as the latter are much more common in the geological history compared to the glaciations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the physical properties, phase morphology, thermal properties, and melt rheological behavior of the blends were investigated by tensile tests, Charpy impact tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and advanced rheology expended system (ARES).
Abstract: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) were melt-blended in the presence of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by twin-screw extrusion. The physical properties, phase morphology, thermal properties, and melt rheological behavior of the blends were investigated by tensile tests, Charpy impact tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and advanced rheology expended system (ARES). With 2 or 5 wt% GMA, the tensile toughness of the PLA/PBAT blend was greatly increased without severe loss in tensile strength. The impact strength of the blend was also significantly improved at 1 wt% of GMA addition but ultimately trended to be saturated with increasing GMA. SEM micrographs revealed that better miscibility and more shear yielding mechanism were involved in the toughening of the blend. DSC results indicated that the blend is still a two-phase system in the presence of reaction agent and the addition of GMA was found to enhance the interfacial adhesion between PLA and PBAT. Rheological results revealed that the addition of T-GMA increased the storage moduli (G′), loss moduli (G′′) and complex viscosity of the blends at nearly all frequencies. The decreased shear-thinning tendency of the blends in the presence of T-GMA also implied improved melt stability during processing.
