TL;DR: The first successful example of a polymer-clay hybrid was nylon-Clay hybrid (NCH), which is a nano-meter-sized composite of nylon-6 and 1-nm-thick exfoliated aluminosilicate layers of the clay mineral.
Abstract: The first successful example of a polymer-clay hybrid was nylon-clay hybrid (NCH), which is a nano-meter-sized composite of nylon-6 and 1-nm-thick exfoliated aluminosilicate layers of the clay mineral. NCH was found and developed at Toyota Central Research and Development Laboratories over 17 years ago. The NCH containing a few weight percentages of clay exhibits superior properties such as high modulus, high strength, and good gas-barrier properties. The key for the discovery of NCH was the polymerization of a nylon monomer in the interlayer space of the clay. This highlight presents the development of NCH from its discovery to its commercialization. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 819–824, 2004

TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of a rotating disk electrode (RDE) setup for electrochemical area (ECA) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) area specific activity and mass specific activity (MA) was characterized for a statistically significant number of independent samples.
Abstract: Platinum electrocatalysts supported on high surface area and Vulcan carbon blacks (Pt/HSC, Pt/V) were characterized in rotating disk electrode (RDE) setups for electrochemical area (ECA) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) area specific activity (SA) and mass specific activity (MA) at 0.9 V. Films fabricated using several ink formulations and film-drying techniques were characterized for a statistically significant number of independent samples. The highest quality Pt/HSC films exhibited MA 870 ± 91 mA/mgPt and SA 864 ± 56 μA/cm2 Pt while Pt/V had MA 706 ± 42 mA/mgPt and SA 1120 ± 70 μA/cm2 Pt when measured in 0.1 M HClO4, 20 mV/s, 100 kPa O2 and 23±2°C. An enhancement factor of 2.8 in themeasured SA was observable on eliminating Nafion ionomer and employing extremely thin, uniform films (~4.5 μg/cm2 Pt) of Pt/HSC. The ECA for Pt/HSC (99 ± 7 m2/gPt) and Pt/V (65 ± 5 m2/gPt) were statistically invariant and insensitive to film uniformity/thickness/fabrication technique; accordingly, enhancements in MA are wholly attributable to increases in SA. Impedance measurements coupled with scanning electron microscopy were used to de-convolute the losses within the catalyst layer and ascribed to the catalyst layer resistance, oxygen diffusion, and sulfonate anion adsorption/blocking. 21 Jun 2000TL;DR: In this article, a portable terminal and an on-vehicle device are combined such that effective navigation can be provided, where the portable terminal provided with communication function is connected with the onvehicle information processing device when placed on a cradle.
Abstract: A portable terminal and an on-vehicle device are combined such that effective navigation can be provided. The portable terminal provided with communication function is connected with the on-vehicle information processing device when placed on a cradle. The portable terminal transmits a destination to an information center, and shows obtained route data on a display while transmitting the route data to the on-vehicle device which outputs guidance speech from a speaker. On arriving near the destination, the on-vehicle information processing device provides the portable terminal with map data for the vicinity of the destination. A user can remove the portable terminal from the cradle and reach the destination while viewing a map shown on the display of the portable terminal.

23 Oct 1998TL;DR: In this paper, a compression ignition type engine, where a first combustion where the amount of the recirculated exhaust gas supplied to the combustion chamber is larger than the amount consumed by the second combustion is switched to the first combustion when the temperature of the catalyst arranged in an engine exhaust passage is about to fall below the activation temperature was investigated.
Abstract: A compression ignition type engine, wherein a first combustion where the amount of the recirculated exhaust gas supplied to the combustion chamber is larger than the amount of recirculated exhaust gas where the amount of production of soot peaks and almost no soot is produced and a second combustion where the amount of recirculated exhaust gas supplied to the combustion chamber is smaller than the amount of recirculated exhaust gas where the amount of production of soot peaks are selectively switched between and where the second combustion is switched to the first combustion when the temperature of the catalyst arranged in an engine exhaust passage is about to fall below the activation temperature.
