TL;DR: It has been shown that the mean serum folic acid level falls as pregnancy advances and that 3 months after delivery the level has not reached that of non‐pregnant women in the child bearing age.
Abstract: Summary In a prospective study of a randomly selected group of pregnant women it has been shown that the mean serum folic acid level falls as pregnancy advances and that 3 months after delivery the level has not reached that of non-pregnant women in the child bearing age. Low serum folic acid levels at the first visit and subsequently throughout pregnancy were observed in 15 patients who developed megaloblastic erythropoiesis at or near term. The haemoglobin level at term of patients with a low folic acid level at the first visit was significantly lower when compared with those with a higher initial level. The duration of low serum folic acid levels, and its relation to subsequent marrow change towards full megaloblastosis is discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, two pea-pod and leaf-spot pathogens, Mycosphaerella pinodes and Ascochyta pisi, have been investigated in soil experiments, showing that the former species may survive overwinter in soil whether introduced as pycnidiospores, mycelium, chlamydospores or sclerotia.
Abstract: SUMMARY Laboratory and field experiments on two pea-pod and leaf-spot pathogens, Mycosphaerella pinodes and Ascochyta pisi, have indicated that the former species may survive overwinter in soil whether introduced as pycnidiospores, mycelium, chlamydospores or sclerotia The survival of pycnidiospores appears to be due at least in part to their transformation into chlamydospores in the soil A pisi was much less successful in soil; the mycelium inoculum survived, somewhat sporadically, and spore viability was reduced, while the total number of spores declined markedly Investigations on the competitive saprophytic ability of these pathogens showed that by the agar plate method M pinodes could be classed as a moderately successful saprophyte, though the Butler and Park methods indicated only intermediate and poor success respectively A pisi was adjudged a poor saprophyte by all three methods Saprophytic growth and survival in soil of both fungi was generally better at 2 °C than at 15 °C

TL;DR: Autographs from fresh frozen sections confirmed areas of fibrinolytic activity around the blood vessels, especially in the region of capillaries and small veins, in two dogs on chlorpropamide who later developed resistance to the drug.
Abstract: Studies have been made on the activation of animal plasminogen in vitro and in vivo. Whole blood lysis times and euglobulin lysis times were determined for animals of different species. Dilution enhanced spontaneous lysis time of dog blood but not of cattle, horse, sheep and rabbit blood. The dog blood contains proactivator and is activated by streptokinase. The initial streptokinase dose has been determined for dog blood in vivo. The blood of cattle, horses, sheep and rabbits was activated by urokinase which does not seem to require the presence of proactivator. A tissue activator was present in the lymph nodes, kidneys, spleen and heart muscle but not in the liver of rabbits. Autographs from fresh frozen sections confirmed areas of fibrinolysis around the blood vessels, especially in the region of capillaries and small veins. Two dogs on chlorpropamide showed a temporary increase in fibrinolytic activity and later developed resistance to the drug. Chlorpropamide had no fibrinolytic effect in rabbits.

TL;DR: The mass spectra of twenty one C-19 modified cholesteryl derivatives have been determined and compared with results for related systems in this paper, where the metastable evidence for C-3 tosylates evidence for pyrolysis before electron impact fragmentation is presented.
Abstract: The mass spectra of twenty one C-19 modified cholesteryl derivatives have been determined and compared with results for related systems. In the case when the hydrogen(s) of the C-19 group have been replaced by other groups the metastable evidence shows that in those molecules with a C-3 hydroxyl group the loss of water followed by the loss of the C-19 group gives rise to an intense ion at m/e 353, whereas the loss of the C-19 group with hydrogen transfer to the ion, followed by the loss of water gives rise to the large ion at m/e 354. In contrast in the case of the C-3 acetates the main fragmentation is the loss of acetic acid followed by the loss of the C-19 group to give the ion at m/e 353. This is rationalised on the basis of results observed in other systems. In the case of the C-3 tosylates evidence for pyrolysis before electron impact fragmentation is presented. The subsequent fragmentation of the large ions at m/e 354, 353 and other m/e values in the high mass region is shown to be in line with earlier work.

TL;DR: Four brothers were found to be severely intolerant to lactose and routinely drink cold milk as a laxative and the mode of inheritance is that of a recessive gene.
Abstract: Three generations of a family have been investigated. Four brothers were found to be severely intolerant to lactose and routinely drink cold milk as a laxative. The mode of inheritance is that of a recessive gene. Boiled milk has no effect on three of these, brothers and the significance of this is discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the eigenset of a Riesz operator is defined, which is a sequence of quadruples each of which consists of an eigenvalue, the corresponding spectral projection, index and nilpotent part.
Abstract: A Riesz operator is a bounded linear operator on a Banach space which possesses a Riesz spectral theory. These operators have been studied in [5] and [6]. In §2 of this paper we characterise Riesz operators in terms of their resolvent operators. In [6] it was shown that every Riesz operator on a Hilbert space can be decomposed into the sum of compact and quasi-nilpotent parts. §3 contains an example to show that these parts cannot, in general, be chosen to commute. In §4 the eigenset of a Riesz operator is defined. It is a sequence of quadruples each of which consists of an eigenvalue, the corresponding spectral projection, index and nilpotent part. This sequence satisfies certain obvious conditions, and the question arises of the existence of a Riesz operator which has such a sequence as its eigenset. We give an example of an eigenset which has no corresponding Riesz operator.

TL;DR: It is found that a chloroform extract of chorion microsomes behaves in a procoagulant fashion similar to the platelet substitute of Bell and Alton7.
Abstract: THERE is conflicting evidence on the nature of the phospholipid which contributes to the acceleration of clotting in recalcified plasma1–4. Microsomes are a principal source of chorion intracellular thromboplastin5 and we have found6 that a chloroform extract of chorion microsomes behaves in a procoagulant fashion similar to the platelet substitute of Bell and Alton7. We find similar activity in chloroform extract of freeze-dried whole chorion homogenate.

TL;DR: A parallel is drawn between M?
Abstract: Monoclimacis? galaensis (Lapworth), a biform Llandoverian graptolite, is interpreted as having proximal thecal ‘hooks’ composed of paired lateral lappets, and lacking retroversion of the dorsal thecal wall. A parallel is drawn between M? galaensis and members of the Ludlovian genus Lobograptus Urbanek. The significance of the thecal structure is discussed with reference to the principles involved in the classification of the monograptids.

TL;DR: In this paper, three cases of a rare renal lesion, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, were presented, and a solution based on lymphatic obstruction was proposed for the obscure aetiology of the lesion.
Abstract: Three cases of a rare renal lesion, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, are presented. Amyloidosis, hitherto unreported in association with this lesion, was found in the liver in one case. The need for an accurate preoperative diagnosis and long-term follow up are discussed. A solution, based on lymphatic obstruction, is proposed for the obscure aetiology of the lesion.

TL;DR: It was an unusual case because the patient was so young and the involvement of oral soft tissues was so diffuse, and the absence of normally occurring immunoglobulins in the plasma cells was felt to be significant.
Abstract: A review of the literature on myeloma is presented and an unusual case of a myeloma-like plasma cell lesion of the maxilla is reported. The definitive diagnosis was based on the highly characteristic histological appearances, the local immunological findings and the advanced clinical aspects of the condition. The absence of normally occurring immunoglobulins in the plasma cells was felt to be significant. It was an unusual case because the patient was so young and the involvement of oral soft tissues was so diffuse.
