TL;DR: In this article, two variants of a test for heteroscedasticity based on ordinary least squares residuals are proposed: a bounds test and an "exact" test, both of which are parametric and make use of tables of the F distribution.
Abstract: Two variants of a test for heteroscedasticity based on ordinary least squares residuals are proposed: a bounds test and an “exact” test. Both variants are parametric and make use of tables of the F distribution. Under a variety of circumstances, the power of the bounds test compares favorably with the powers of the tests of Goldfeld and Quandt, Theil, and Harvey and Phillips. The computational simplicity of the bounds test compared with other tests makes it a particularly attractive practical procedure. The power of the “exact” test generally exceeds that of the other tests, but the “exact” test is rather difficult to apply in practice.

TL;DR: An enrichment procedure that exploits the difference in heat-sensitivity between exponentially growing and stationary phase cells has been developed for the isolation of yeast mutants, and seems adaptable to the selection of a wide variety of types of mutants.
Abstract: An enrichment procedure that exploits the difference in heat-sensitivity between exponentially growing and stationary phase cells has been developed for the isolation of yeast mutants. Enrichments of up to 12-fold for temperature-sensitive lethal mutants and of up to 15-fold for auxotrophs have been obtained with single cycles of selection. Still higher enrichments (to frequencies of greater than 90% and 80% for temperature-sensitive lethals and auxotrophs, respectively) have been obtained with multiple cycles of selection. The method requires no special parent strain, and seems adaptable to the selection of a wide variety of types of mutants.

TL;DR: In this paper, a generalised Marchenko equation was derived for a 2 × 2 matrix inverse method and it was shown that, for the subset of equations solvable by the method which can be construed as defining the flows of Hamiltonians, the inverse transform is a canonical (homogenous contact) transformation.
Abstract: We derive a generalised Marchenko equation for a 2 × 2 matrix inverse method and use it to show that, for the subset of equations solvable by the method which can be construed as defining the flows of Hamiltonians, the inverse transform is a canonical (homogenous contact) transformation. We re-examine Backlund transformations from this point of view.

TL;DR: In this paper, a complex Banach space is characterized in terms of compact holomorphic mappings and equicontinuity conditions on the spaces of n-homogeneous Taylor polynomial coefficients.
Abstract: Let E be an infinite dimensional complex Banach space. Let Hwu(e) be the space of entire complexvalued functions on E which are weakly uniformly continuous when restricted to any bounded subset of E, and let Hwsc(E) be the space of entire complex-valued functions on E which map weakly convergent sequences in E to convergent sequences. These and intermediate spaces are characterized in terms of compact holomorphic mappings and in terms of equicontinuity conditions on the spaces of n-homogeneous Taylor polynomial coefficients.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Burton, Prim and Slichter theoretical model was used to calculate the average growth rate of olivines of different morphologies from the Rhum layered intrusion, Scotland and the BPS model used to assess the average crystal growth rate for each morphological type.
Abstract: Fast crystal-growth rates can lead to the disequilibrium partition of trace and major elements in igneous rocks and to modification of the compositional path taken by an intrusive, fractionating magma. Kinetic variations in partition coefficients may be used to determine crystal-growth rates in selected cases, by the Burton, Prim and Slichter theoretical model (1953). Fission track analysis has been used to study the variation in uranium concentration in olivines of different morphologies from the Rhum layered intrusion, Scotland, and the BPS model used to assess the average crystal growth rate for each morphological type. The growth rate for the harrisitic morphology was approximately five times faster than that for the equant morphology. Reliable data, especially on diffusion coefficients of appropriate elements, are needed before absolute growth rates may be calculated.

TL;DR: The uptake, accumulation and depuration of a labelled hydrocarbon by the marine annelid Arenicola marina were studied and the results discussed with reference to the rehabilitation of oiled environments, as A. marina is thought to be capable, in high numbers, of greatly reworking sediments.
Abstract: The uptake, accumulation and depuration of a labelled hydrocarbon (14C-1-naphthalene) by the marine annelid Arenicola marina were studied. Naphthalene was chosen because it is an important component of oil and is known to be toxic to marine organisms. The bioavailability of the hydrocarbon to the worm from contaminated sediment is examined and the results discussed with reference to the rehabilitation of oiled environments, as A. marina is thought to be capable, in high numbers, of greatly reworking sediments.

TL;DR: In this article, an informal account of the creation of a thematic atlas of Ireland over a period of seven years is given, including the setting up of an organisation for the project under the auspices of the Royal Irish Academy and some of the financial implications.
Abstract: This is an informal account of the creation of a thematic atlas of Ireland over a period of seven years. The first part relates to the setting up of an organisation for the project under the auspices of the Royal Irish Academy and touches also on some of the financial implications. The second part explains how the contents of the atlas were selected and the maps compiled. Various problems including those relating to the choice of data, the scale and format of the maps, the use of colour and the correction of the proofs, are also discussed.

TL;DR: The role of interpersonal relationships in mediating the experience of crowding and loss of personal control was investigated in dormitory environments housing two or three students in bedroom units as mentioned in this paper, and a combination of survey, observational, and laboratory techniques was used to explore the formation of 2-person coalitions in tripled housing and subsequent problems created for the third roommate.
Abstract: The role of interpersonal relationships in mediating the experience of crowding and loss of personal control was investigated in dormitory environments housing two or three students in bedroom units. A combination of survey, observational, and laboratory techniques was used to explore the formation of 2-person coalitions in tripled housing and subsequent problems created for the third, “left-out” roommate. Data strongly suggested that the aversiveness and loss of control previously associated with tripled residential settings may be more plausibly attributed to the inherent instability of 3-person groups and the loss of control associated with being excluded from group activities. In most of the tripled rooms studied, 2-person coalitions formed and most of the crowding and negative affect reported were expressed by the third roommate, who felt left out by the others. Residents of doubled rooms and members of coalitions in tripled rooms did not differ from one another on most dimensions.

TL;DR: In this article, a questionnaire based on the Stereotype Measure of Katz and Braly was administered to a random sample of 400 adults in Dublin to investigate the cognitive component of attitudes to the mentally ill, and the results from the survey show that the public hold stereotyped conceptions of "mental patients", "insane people" and "neurotic people".
Abstract: In order to investigate the cognitive component of attitudes to the mentally ill, a questionnaire based on the Stereotype Measure of Katz and Braly was administered to a random sample of 400 adults in Dublin. The results from the survey show that the public hold stereotyped conceptions of ‘mental patients’, ‘insane people’ and ‘neurotic people’. The neurotic are, clearly differentiated but the stereotypes of mental patients and the insane differ from eachother in degree and emphasis rather than in content. There is little evidence in any of the stereotypes of misinformation that could be corrected by education programs. Indeed, it seems that these groups are generally perceived in terms of unhappiness, confusion and withdrawal, terms that are predictable concomitants of being admitted to a psychiatric hospital. On the other hand a factor analysis of responses to the questionnaire revealed something of the cognitive structure of the public's conceptions and strongly suggested the existence of minority stereotypes. For instance, it appears that a significant minority of the sample perceive mental patients as violent and dangerous. An analysis of the effects of age, sex and socio-economic class on conceptions of the mentally ill was also carried out. The youngest group were shown to hold a generally more positive view of the mentally ill. Class membership was not a major influence on the content of the stereotypes except in the case of the lowest socioeconomic group, a substantial minority of which appear to confuse the mentally ill with the mentally retarded.

TL;DR: An examination of the brain revealed all of the characteristic features of acute necrotising encephalitis with predominant involvement of the left limbic system, and the distribution of herpes simplex virus suggests that the olfactory apparatus is the route of infection.
Abstract: A 49-yr-old female developed a rapidly progressive neurological illness. The gross, light microscopic and electron-microscopic examination of the brain revealed all of the characteristic features of acute necrotising encephalitis with predominant involvement of the left limbic system. The distribution of herpes simplex virus suggests that the olfactory apparatus is the route of infection.

TL;DR: An investigation of medical students’ conceptualizations of different psychiatric patient categories, using the Katz‐Braly stereotype measuring technique and the semantic differential technique, finds that changes that appeared to result from the educational process.
Abstract: The paper describes an investigation of medical students' conceptualizations of different psychiatric patients categories, using the Katz-Braly stereotype measuring technique and the semantic differential technique. The conceptual content of sixteen fourth year medical students' stereotypes of psychiatric patient categories was elicited and their evaluations of the categories were measured. These measures were taken before and after a two-month training course in psychiatry and special attention was paid to changes that appeared to result from the educational process. The Katz-Braly stereotype measure produces a work picture of each patients category involving four traits; for instance for the category neurotic the following traits were derived: 'temperamental', 'hypochondriacal', 'worried' and 'tense'. The important triats for each category were analysed separately to determine if any statistically significant changes in the stereotype had occurred over the two-month training course. Several significant additions and omissions of traits were found. These changes may be explained as the result of teaching, the students' direct experience of psychiatric patients and their acquisition of a new technical vocabulary. Despite the changes in the students' stereotypes of patients, their evaluations of the patients, as measured by the semantic differential, remained substantially unaltered by the training course.

TL;DR: Budo's theory of orientational relaxation of an assembly of molecules containing rotating polar groups, which may interact through dipole-dipole coupling between nearest neighbours of the group, is re-examined in this article.
Abstract: Budo's theory of orientational relaxation of an assembly of molecules containing rotating polar groups, which may interact through dipole-dipole coupling between nearest neighbours of the group, is re-examined. It is shown that many of his results, pertaining to dielectric relaxation, may be rederived in a far simpler way by making use of linear response theory and it is indicated how the treatment may be extended to obtain the relaxation times and correlation functions appropriate to Kerr effect relaxation etc. Further, in the particular case where the dipole-dipole coupling is represented by a harmonic torque, it is shown how both the auto- and cross-correlation functions of the dipoles may be obtained in closed form. Both the two- and the three-dimensional versions of the molecular model predict the occurrence of a distribution of relaxation times and this distribution will always be present, irrespective of the mathematical form of V, the interaction potential, the single exception being the case of f...

TL;DR: In this article, a methodology for performing such an integration, and offers tables of specific output for windmills of different characteristics located at different sites in Ireland, the variations in this specific output are discussed.
Abstract: Data on actual wind energy availability in Ireland are sparse. This is because (a) relatively little data on wind speeds have been collected in Ireland at sites of interest for wind exploitation, and (b) such data need in any case to be integrated with the characteristics of actual windmills which respond more efficiently to certain wind speed than to others. This paper describes a methodology for performing such an integration, and offers tables of specific output for windmills of different characteristics located at different sites in Ireland. the variations in this specific output are discussed.

TL;DR: For instance, this article recorded EMG from 6 male and 6 female college students (22.5 and 22.5 yr) for 5 days during 4 10-min. periods of EMGfeedback on days 1 to 4 while repeating a mantra or relaxing.
Abstract: For 6 male and 6 female college students (22.5 yr.) EMGs were recorded from the frontalis for 5 days during 4 10-min. periods of EMG-feedback on Days 1 to 4 while repeating a mantra or relaxing. Significantly lower frontalis EMG on Day 5 occurred while subjects repeated the mantra although the actual difference was too small to be of clinical value.
