Abstract: Background This paper deals with the preprocessing of protein sequences for supervised classification. Motif extraction is one way to address that task. It has been largely used to encode biological sequences into feature vectors to enable using well-known machine-learning classifiers which require this format. However, designing a suitable feature space, for a set of proteins, is not a trivial task. For this purpose, we propose a novel encoding method that uses amino-acid substitution matrices to define similarity between motifs during the extraction step.

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare perceptions of retail logistics service quality among Romanian and Tunisian customers, and determine which dimensions of logistics service quality have the greatest influence on customer satisfaction and loyalty.Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected using self‐administered questionnaires from two convenience samples of hypermarket customers (100 in Romania and 100 in Tunisia). Logistics service quality was measured using two dimensions: the relational LSQ (The perception of Carrefour employees' assurance, responsiveness and caring) and the operational LSQ (Carrefour reliability). Data were analyzed by using confirmatory factor analysis, ANOVA and linear regression.Findings – Respondents in both countries reported high levels of perceived logistics service quality in Carrefour. Abstract: Environmental stresses such as salinity directly impact crop growth, and by extension, world food supply and societal prosperity. It is estimated that over 800 million hectares of land throughout the world are salt-affected. In arid and semi-arid regions, salt concentration can be close to that in the seawater. Hence, there are intensive efforts to improve plant tolerance to salinity and other environmental stressors. Salicylic acid (SA) is an important signal molecule for modulating plant responses to stress. In the present study, we examined, on multiple plant growth related endpoints, whether SA applied through the rooting medium could mitigate the adverse effects of salinity on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cv. Marmande. The latter is a hitherto understudied tomato plant from the above perspective; it is a classic variety that produces the large ribbed tomatoes in the Mediterranean and consumed worldwide. We found salt stress negatively affected the growth of cv. Marmande tomato plants. However, the SA-treated plants had greater shoot and root dry mass, leaf area compared to untreated plants when exposed to salt stress. Application of SA restores photosynthetic rates and photosynthetic pigment levels under salt (NaCl) exposure. Leaf water, osmotic potential, stomatal conductance transpiration rate, and biochemical parameters were also ameliorated in SA-treated plants under saline stress conditions. Overall, these data illustrate that SA increases cv. Marmande tomato growth by improving photosynthesis, regulation and balance of osmotic potential, induction of compatible osmolyte metabolism, and alleviating membrane damage. We suggest salicylic acid might be considered as a potential growth regulator to improve tomato plant salinity stress resistance, in the current era of global climate change.

Abstract: Purpose: Trainers and physical fitness coaches’ need a useful tool to assess training loads to avoid overtraining. However, perceived scales or questionnaires were required. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess whether a short 8-item questionnaire of fatigue could be a useful tool for monitoring changes in perceived training load and strain among elite rugby Sevens (7s) players during preparation for a major competition. Methods: Sixteen elite rugby 7s players completed an 8-week training program composed of 6-week intense training (IT) and 2-week reduced training (RT). They were tested before (T0), after the IT (T1) and after the RT (T2). The quantification of the perceived training load and strain were performed by the session-RPE (rating of perceived exertion) method and concomitantly the 8-item questionnaire of fatigue was administered. Results: Training load (TL) and strain (TS) and total score of fatigue (TSF from the 8-item questionnaire) increased during IT and decreased during RT. Simultaneously, physical performances decreased during IT and were improved after LT. The changes in TL, TS and TSF correlated significantly over the training period (r=0.63-0.83). Conclusions: These findings suggest that the short questionnaire of fatigue could be a practical and a sensitive tool for monitoring changes in training load and strain in team-sport athletes. Accordingly, the simultaneous use of the short questionnaire of fatigue along with the session-RPE method for perceived changes in training load and strain during training could provide additional information on the athletes’ status, allowing coaches to prevent eventual states of overreaching or overtraining.

Abstract: In this paper, a new class of a pair of generalized nonlinear contractions on partially ordered partial metric spaces is introduced, and some coincidence and common fixed-point theorems for these contractions are proved. Presented theorems are twofold generalizations of very recent fixed-point theorems of Altun and Erduran (Fixed Point Theory Appl 2011(Article ID 508730):10, 2011), Altun et al. (Topol Appl 157(18):2778-2785, 2010), Matthews (Proceedings of the 8th summer conference on general topology and applications, New York Academy of Sciences, New York, pp. 183-197, 1994) and many other known corresponding theorems.
