TL;DR: The antiandrogenic activity of procymidone was demonstrated in vivo and in vitro in cell lines transfected with hAR and appears to be slightly less potent in inducing malformations than vinclozolin by a factor of about two.
Abstract: Procymidone is a dicarboximide fungicide structurally related to the well-characterized fungicide vinclozolin. Vinclozolin metabolites bind to mammalian androgen receptors (AR) and act as AR antagonists, inhibiting androgen-dependent gene expression in vivo and in vitro by inhibiting AR-binding to DNA. The current study was designed to determine if procymidone acted as an AR antagonist in vitro and to describe the dosage levels of procymidone that alter sexual differentiation in vivo. In vitro, procymidone inhibited androgen from binding the human AR (hAR) in COS (monkey kidney) cells transfected with hAR at 3.16 μM. In vitro, procymidone acted as an androgen antagonist, inhibiting dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced transcriptional activation at 0.2 μM in CV-1 cells (cotransfected with the hAR and a MMTV-luciferase reporter gene). In vivo, maternal procymidone exposure at 0, 25, 50, 100, or 200 mg kg−1 day−1 during gestation and early lactation (gestational day 14 to postnatal day 3) altered reproductive d...

TL;DR: The blockage of reactive sites on the surface of Fe0 and its corrosion products by specific adsorption of the inner-sphere complex forming ligands (oxalate, citrate, sulfate, borate, and phosphate) may be responsible for the decreased nitrate reduction by Fe0 relative to the chloride system.
Abstract: Recent studies have shown that zerovalent iron (Fe0) may potentially be used as a chemical medium in permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) for groundwater nitrate remediation; however, the effects of commonly found organic and inorganic ligands in soil and sediments on nitrate reduction by Fe0 have not been well understood. A 25.0 mL nitrate solution of 20.0 mg of N L-1 (1.43 mM nitrate) was reacted with 1.00 g of Peerless Fe0 at 200 rpm on a rotational shaker at 23 °C for up to 120 h in the presence of each of the organic acids (3.0 mM formic, 1.5 mM oxalic, and 1.0 mM citric acids) and inorganic acids (3.0 mM HCl, 1.5 mM H2SO4, 3.0 mM H3BO3, and 1.5 mM H3PO4). These acids provided an initial dissociable H+ concentration of 3.0 mM available for nitrate reduction reactions under conditions of final pH < 9.3. Nitrate reduction rates (pseudo-first-order) increased in the order: H3PO4 < citric acid < H3BO3 < oxalic acid < H2SO4 < formic acid < HCl, ranging from 0.00278 to 0.0913 h-1, corresponding to surface a...

TL;DR: The existing literature on the known health effects of PFOA in animal models is reviewed, focusing on sensitive developmental periods, and epidemiologic health data is presented, with the caveat that these studies largely address only associations between adult exposures and outcomes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a series of innovative granular activated carbon (GAC) composites incorporated with iron/palladium (Fe/Pd) bimetallic nanoparticles was developed to achieve the physical adsorption of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to GAC and their electrochemical dechlorination by Fe/pd bimetal on the GAC.
Abstract: Synthesis and use of reactive metal particles have shown significant environmental implications for the remediation of groundwater and sediment contaminated with chlorinated compounds. Herein, we have developed an effective strategy, employing a series of innovative granular activated carbon (GAC) composites incorporated with iron/palladium (Fe/Pd) bimetallic nanoparticles. The physical adsorption of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to GAC and their electrochemical dechlorination by Fe/Pd bimetal on the GAC could be simultaneously achieved. The novel synthesis approaches and targets to achieve in this study are (i) introduction of mesoporous GAC for Fe/Pd bimetal placement, (ii) in situ formation and incorporation of Fe particles in the GAC pores, (iii) modification of Fe surface with a discontinuous layer of noble metal Pd, and (iv) nanoscaling of Fe and Pd particles. Fe was imbedded in 7−40 nm mesoporous GAC via an incipient wetness impregnation method employing Fe(NO3)3. Heat-treated GAC/Fe (as Fe2O3) ...
