29 Sep 1999TL;DR: A ceramic material has particular utility as a thermal insulating or thermal barrier coating on metallic substrates as discussed by the authors, where the material may include fluorite and pyrochlore structure.
Abstract: A ceramic material has particular utility as a thermal insulating or thermal barrier coating on metallic substrates. The ceramic material includes gadolinia and zirconia, preferably forming gadolinia-zirconia oxide. The material may include fluorite and pyrochlore structure. This material exhibits chemical stability, thermal stability and thermal insulating properties superior to those of currently used thermal barrier ceramics, and also provides resistance to sintering and erosion comparable to currently used ceramics. A preferred material has between about 5-60 mol. % gadolinia.

TL;DR: A data-driven, kernel-based method for approximating the leading Koopman eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and modes in problems with high-dimensional state spaces is presented, using a set of scalar observables that are defined implicitly by the feature map associated with a user-defined kernel function.
Abstract: A data-driven, kernel-based method for approximating the leading Koopman
eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and modes in problems with high-dimensional state
spaces is presented.
This approach uses a set of scalar observables (functions that map a state to a scalar value) that are defined implicitly by the feature map associated with a user-defined kernel function.
This circumvents the computational issues that arise due to the number of
functions required to span a ``sufficiently rich'' subspace of all possible scalar observables in such applications.
We illustrate this method on two examples: the first is the FitzHugh-Nagumo PDE,
a prototypical one-dimensional reaction-diffusion
system, and the second is a set of vorticity data computed from experimentally obtained
velocity data from flow past a cylinder at Reynolds number 413.
In both examples, we use the output of Dynamic Mode Decomposition, which has a similar computational cost, as the benchmark for our approach.

05 Jun 2002TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method for the fabrication of three-dimensional micro-mechanical devices and/or micro-structures using a production casting process and intermediate molds.
Abstract: In certain exemplary embodiments of the present invention, three-dimensional micro-mechanical devices and/or micro-structures can be made using a production casting process. As part of this process, an intermediate mold can be made from or derived from a precision stack lamination and used to fabricate the devices and/or structures. Further, the micro-devices and/or micro-structures can be fabricated on planar or nonplanar surfaces through use of a series of production casting processes and intermediate molds. The use of precision stack lamination can allow the fabrication of high aspect ratio structures. Moreover, via certain molding and/or casting materials, molds having cavities with protruding undercuts also can be fabricated. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract that will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure. This abstract is submitted with the understanding that it will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or meaning of the claims.

19 Nov 2012TL;DR: The book shows how ADP can be used to design a family of adaptive optimal control algorithms that converge in real-time to optimal control solutions by measuring data along the system trajectories.
Abstract: This book gives an exposition of recently developed approximate dynamic programming (ADP) techniques for decision and control in human engineered systems ADP is a reinforcement machine learning technique that is motivated by learning mechanisms in biological and animal systems It is connected from a theoretical point of view with both adaptive control and optimal control methods The book shows how ADP can be used to design a family of adaptive optimal control algorithms that converge in real-time to optimal control solutions by measuring data along the system trajectories Generally, in the current literature adaptive controllers and optimal controllers are two distinct methods for the design of automatic control systems Traditional adaptive controllers learn online in real time how to control systems, but do not yield optimal performance On the other hand, traditional optimal controllers must be designed offline using full knowledge of the systems dynamics It is also shown how to use ADP methods to solve multi-player differential games online Differential games have been shown to be important in H-infinity robust control for disturbance rejection, and in coordinating activities among multiple agents in networked teams The focus of this book is on continuous-time systems, whose dynamical models can be derived directly from physical principles based on Hamiltonian or Lagrangian dynamics
