Abstract: The diabetic neuropathies are heterogeneous disorders which present with variable clinical manifestations affecting different parts of nervous system [1]. (Table 35.1). Involvement of the peripheral and autonomic nervous systems is probably the most common complication of diabetes. The duration and severity of hyperglycemia are major risk factors for the development of diabetic neuropathy in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes [2]. The United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study showed that other factors, including dyslipidemia and hypertension as part of the metabolic syndrome, are instrumental in the onset and progression of diabetic neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes [3].
