TL;DR: Paget's disease of bone is a focal disorder of bone remodeling accompanied initially by an increase in bone resorption, followed by a disorganized and excessive formation of bone, leading to pain, fractures and deformities.
Abstract: Paget's disease of bone is a focal disorder of bone remodeling accompanied initially by an increase in bone resorption, followed by a disorganized and excessive formation of bone, leading to pain, fractures and deformities. It exhibits a marked geographical variation in its prevalence. In Brazil it predominantly affects persons of European descent. The majority of the reported cases of the disease in Brazil are from Recife, owing to its peculiar mixed European colonization over approximately four centuries. The etiology is complex and involves both genetic and environmental factors. The disease is often asymptomatic and diagnosis is usually based on biochemical markers of bone turnover, radionuclide bone scan and radiological examination. Bisphosphonates, in particular zoledronic acid, are regarded as the treatment of choice for Paget's disease of bone.

TL;DR: Vascular collapse (shock) was present in 12 (85.7%) cases, with or without the association of major bleeding, and was the most important cause of death, and wasn't identified in the other 6 cases.
Abstract: This paper shows data regarding dengue and hemorrhagic fever of the dengue epidemic in Recife in 2002 and the clinical, laboratorial and necropsy results from the 14 patients who died that year. The sorotype Den-3 was detected in 76.3% of cases. The majority of deaths occurred among men, over 20 years old, on the 11 th day of disease, attended in the private hospitals. The average values of the hematocryt and platelets were 40.7% and 56,313p/mm 3 , respectively. Hepatitis, with high levels oftransaminases, occurred in the majority of patients, who generally were anicteric. Of the fourteen deaths, 13 received laborat orialconfirmation of the infection. In eight cases death occurred due to hemorrhagic phenomena, however, in the other 6 casessignificant bleeding was not identified. Vascular collapse (chock) was present in 12 (85.7%) cases, with or without theassociation of major bleeding, and was the most important cause of death. Key-words: Dengue. Hemorrhagic fever of dengue. Necropsia. Death.

TL;DR: The prevalence of TMD was considered high (33.2%) and adolescents with chronic pain and headache in the past six months were more likely to have TMD.
Abstract: Aims To determine the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders and associated factors in an adolescent sample from Recife, Brazil. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1342 adolescents aged 10–17 years. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) was used by calibrated examiners to evaluate the presence and levels of chronic pain. To evaluate the socioeconomic conditions, the subjects answered the Brazilian Economic Classification Criteria (CCEB) questionnaire. Data were analyzed by means of binary logistic regression in SPSS. Results The results showed that 33.2% of the subjects had TMD irrespective of age (p = 0.153) or economic class (p = 0.653). Statistically significant associations were found between TMD and female gender (p = 0.017), headache/migraine in the past six months (p<0.001), chronic pain (p<0.001) and chronic pain level (p<0.001). In the final model, logistic regression showed that the level of chronic pain and the headache/migraine in the past six months were related to the presence of TMD. Conclusions The prevalence of TMD was considered high (33.2%) and adolescents with chronic pain and headache in the past six months were more likely to have TMD. Clinical relevance The data contribute to the understanding of TMD among adolescents and to the development of preventive measures and polices to identify the dysfunction promptly.

08 Nov 2002TL;DR: A system for efficient storage, indexing and network transmission of images of historical documents, where the documents are first decomposed into their features such as paper texture, colours, typewritten parts, pictures, etc.
Abstract: This paper describes a system for efficient storage, indexing and network transmission of images of historical documents. The documents are first decomposed into their features such as paper texture, colours, typewritten parts, pictures, etc. Document retrieval forces the re-assembling of the document, synthetising an image visually close to the original document. The information needed to build the final image occupies, in average, 2 Kbytes performing a very efficient compression scheme.
