TL;DR: The production of primary and secondary metabolites in leaves of A. colubrina can be maximised by mycorrhization, with the benefit depending on supplementation of soil phosphate.
Abstract: Background The application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can increase the growth and concentration of primary and secondary metabolites in several plant species. Cebil (Anadenanthera colubrina), a medicinal plant, benefits from mycorrhizal association, but the influence of the symbiosis on the production of its bioactive compounds is unknown. In this study the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation and phosphorus (P) supply on the production of primary and secondary metabolites in cebil seedlings was determined. Results The production of proteins and carbohydrates in terms of both concentration and content was enhanced by inoculation with AMF, but this benefit was mitigated at higher levels of P (30 and 50 mg dm−3 soil). The concentration of phenols, flavonoids and total tannins was favoured by mycorrhizal inoculation even at the highest levels of P (30 and 50 mg dm−3 soil). Conclusion The production of primary and secondary metabolites in leaves of A. colubrina can be maximised by mycorrhization, with the benefit depending on supplementation of soil phosphate.© 2012 Society of Chemical Industry

TL;DR: Just a few studies to date have focused on headaches, quality of life, and academic performance in children, but more needs to be done to understand why headaches in children are so common.
Abstract: Background Just a few studies to date have focused on headaches, quality of life, and academic performance in children. Objective Determine the effect of headaches on the life of schoolchildren and the association between headaches and academic performance. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study. One hundred and ninety-five students from an elementary school were randomly selected out of 355 students aged from 10 to 15 years old. Semi-structured interview, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Version 4.0, the Children's Depression Inventory, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used. The variables relating to academic performance were obtained by consulting the academic records. Results Prevalence of headaches: headache: 97.3% (179/184); migraine: 51% (94/184); tension-type headache: 33% (61/184); primary stabbing headache: 7.6% (14/184); unclassified headaches: 5.4% (10/184). Migraine (relative risk: 3.11; 95% confidence interval: 1.54-6.30) and more severe headaches (relative risk: 7.93; 95% confidence interval: 2.65-23.7) were associated with lower quality of life (P .05; chi-square test and Fisher's exact test). Conclusion Headaches were found to be associated with lower quality of life and poor academic performance.

TL;DR: In the time series, mortality coefficients due to external causes showed an increasing trend, in particular due to homicides among adolescents, where the coefficient increased on average 3.05 per year, yielding a relative increase of 601, 3% over the study period.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To analyze the magnitude and trends of mortality due to external causes in specific age groups, from 0 to 19 years old in a population living in the city of Recife, Brazil, from 1979 to 1995. METHODS: Data from the Mortality Data System of the Ministry of Health and Health Department of Pernambuco State was used. The studied population, aged 0 to 19 years old, represented 41.8% of total city population in 1991. A time series exploratory ecological model was created to analyze trends in mortality coefficients due to external causes. Using simple linear regression these coefficients were assessed in specific age groups categorized by gender. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: In the time series, mortality coefficients due to external causes showed an increasing trend, in particular due to homicides among adolescents, where the coefficient increased on average 3.05 per year, yielding a relative increase of 601, 3% over the study period. In 1995, more than 90% of these homicides were perpetrated with fire weapons. These data reinforce the seriousness of this problem and the need to deal with it, taking into account the difficulties in determining the causes of violence.
