TL;DR: COVID-19-related fear was a risk factor for developing insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents during the pandemic and Educators should help adolescents to be more physically active in their daily life in the primary prevention of adolescent insomnia, depression and anxiety.
Abstract: Purpose This study aimed to investigate associations of physical activity time (PAT) and sitting time (ST) independently and jointly with insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents in the context of COVID-19. Methods A cross-sectional study including 965 adolescents (mean age = 15.26, SD = 0.46) was conducted in May 2020. PAT, ST and the symptoms of insomnia, depression and anxiety were assessed with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form, the Youth Self-Rating Insomnia Scales, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale via an online survey platform. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between COVID-19-related fear, PAT, ST and combinations of PAT and ST with insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms. Results COVID-19-related fear was associated with higher odds of insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms. PAT was associated with lower odds of insomnia and depressive symptoms, while ST was associated with higher odds of these three symptoms. After combining PAT and ST, the group with both low PAT and high ST was set as the referent. For insomnia, groups with low ST reported significantly lower odds of symptoms. For depression, groups with high PAT and/or low ST reported lower odds of symptoms. Regarding anxiety, only the group with both high PAT and low ST reported lower odds of symptoms. Generally, group with both high PAT and low ST reported lower odds of the three symptoms than the referent. Conclusion COVID-19-related fear was a risk factor for developing insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese adolescents. Fortunately, moving more and sitting less were good for sleep and mental health in Chinese adolescents during the pandemic. Educators should help adolescents to be more physically active in their daily life in the primary prevention of adolescent insomnia, depression and anxiety.

TL;DR: A previously healthy 12-year-old-girl presented with a skin rash, headache, and fever five days after that, she had an acute, progressive, bilateral, and symmetrical motor weakness and evolved to respiratory failure.
Abstract: The authors present a case of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis in a COVID-19 pediatric patient with positive SARS-CoV2 markers from a nasopharyngeal swab. A previously healthy 12-year-old-girl presented with a skin rash, headache, and fever. Five days after that, she had an acute, progressive, bilateral, and symmetrical motor weakness. She evolved to respiratory failure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and cervical spine showed extensive bilateral and symmetric restricted diffusion involving the subcortical and deep white matter, a focal hyperintense T2/FLAIR lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum with restricted diffusion, and extensive cervical myelopathy involving both white and gray matter. Follow-up examinations of the brain and spine were performed 30 days after the first MRI examination. The images of the brain demonstrated mild dilatation of the lateral ventricles and widespread widening of the cerebral sulci, complete resolution of the extensive white matter restricted diffusion, and complete resolution of the restricted diffusion in the lesion of the splenium of the corpus callosum, leaving behind a small gliotic focus. The follow-up examination of the spine demonstrated nearly complete resolution of the extensive signal changes in the spinal cord, leaving behind scattered signal changes in keeping with gliosis. She evolved with partial clinical and neurological improvement and was subsequently discharged.

TL;DR: The results support that measures rarely employed in the gene expression literature can provide better results than commonly employed ones, such as Pearson, Spearman, and euclidean distance.
Abstract: Cluster analysis is usually the first step adopted to unveil information from gene expression microarray data. Besides selecting a clustering algorithm, choosing an appropriate proximity measure (similarity or distance) is of great importance to achieve satisfactory clustering results. Nevertheless, up to date, there are no comprehensive guidelines concerning how to choose proximity measures for clustering microarray data. Pearson is the most used proximity measure, whereas characteristics of other ones remain unexplored. In this paper, we investigate the choice of proximity measures for the clustering of microarray data by evaluating the performance of 16 proximity measures in 52 data sets from time course and cancer experiments. Our results support that measures rarely employed in the gene expression literature can provide better results than commonly employed ones, such as Pearson, Spearman, and euclidean distance. Given that different measures stood out for time course and cancer data evaluations, their choice should be specific to each scenario. To evaluate measures on time-course data, we preprocessed and compiled 17 data sets from the microarray literature in a benchmark along with a new methodology, called Intrinsic Biological Separation Ability (IBSA). Both can be employed in future research to assess the effectiveness of new measures for gene time-course data.

TL;DR: Most of the diabetic patients presented at least one type of oral mucosa lesion or alteration, and Tongue varicose veins and candidiasis were the most prevalent.
Abstract: Summary Aim The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of superficial lesions in the oral cavity mucosa in diabetic patients. Methods The sample was made of 30 patients. To obtain these results we did rigorous clinical and complementary tests. Results Of the 30 patients, 9 (30%) were males and 21 (70%) females. Of the studied patients, 40% were below 60 years of age, and 60% were older than 60 years. Thirteen different types of mucosal alterations were diagnosed. Tongue varicose veins (36.6%) and candidiasis (27.02%) were the most prevalent. Such alterations can be associated with the fact that these conditions are commonly found in senile patients and are also associated with prolonged wear of dentures. Xerostomia was diagnosed in only 1 (3.33%) patient, disagreeing with most of the studies observed in the literature. Conclusion Most of the diabetic patients presented at least one type of oral mucosa lesion or alteration.
