TL;DR: A significant association was found between children with negative behavior and the variables of the child's age, parent's or guardian's education, learning or behavioral problems, parents' and guardian's anxiety, child oral health status, general health problems, history of hospitalization, and dental history.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the uncooperative behavior of low income preschool children receiving dental treatment and the factors associated with that behavior. The sample consisted of 177 Brazilian children of both sexes, ages from three to six years. The children were observed during their dental appointments and their behavior was categorized by the Frankl Behavioral Rating Scale. The oral health of the children was evaluated on the basis of a clinical examination and classified using the dmft index. A history taking with the child's parent or guardian provided current medical condition, dental history, and family situation. Of the children, 1 percent presented definitely positive behavior, 59 percent positive behavior, 28 percent negative behavior, and 12 percent definitely negative. A significant association was found between children with negative behavior and the variables of the child's age, parent's or guardian's education, learning or behavioral problems, parent's or guardian's anxiety, child oral health status, general health problems, history of hospitalization, and dental history.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed adherence and side effects of three iron supplement regimens (ferrous sulfate) on anemic pregnant women and found that complaints are directly proportional and compliance is inversely proportional to the amount of medicinal iron.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to analyze adherence and side effects of three iron supplement regimens (ferrous sulfate) on anemic pregnant women. The clinical trial involved 150 women between the 16th and 20th gestational weeks, at low obstetric risk and with hemoglobin concentration of between 8.0 and 11.0g/dL. Treatment was provided by ferrous sulfate with 60mg of elemental iron during 16 (± 1) weeks, in three regimens: single tablet a week (n = 48); single tablet twice a week (n = 53) or single tablet a day (n = 49). The outcomes were adherence, assessed through interviews and by counting tablets, and side effects, according to patient information. The adherence showed a declining trend (92%, 83% and 71%; p = 0.010) and the side effects revealed a growing trend (40%, 45% and 71%; p = 0.002) as the dosage increased. Diarrhea and epigastric pain were significantly associated with the dose administered (p = 0.002). These results suggest that in anemic pregnant women, complaints are directly proportional and the compliance is inversely proportional to the amount of medicinal iron.

TL;DR: The association between enamel defects and ECC indicates that alterations in the enamel surface may cause progression of dental caries.
Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC), in a cohort of children of low socioeconomic status at 48 months of age in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil, in relation to feeding practices, oral health behaviors, fluoride exposure, and enamel defects. 224 children were clinically examined in the Knee-Knee position at the children's home under natural light. Teeth were dried and cleaned with gauze, and caries (WHO index) and defect (DDE Index) were determined. Questionnaires on children's oral hygiene and dietary history were completed by parents or guardians. The SAS statistical program was used with the Mantel-Haenszel tests. The results showed a prevalence of 10.7% and 33.0% for ECC and SECC, respectively. Of all the children examined, 79.9% had at least one tooth with enamel defects, which was the only statistically significant factor (p < 0.001) for ECC. The association between enamel defects and ECC indicates that alterations in the enamel surface may cause progression of dental caries.

TL;DR: Negative self-perceived health was exceptional, but positively associated with age, leisure physical activity, perceived quality of sleeping, perceived stress, and sex, while Meanwhile, the outcome was negatively associated with family income and schooling.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of negative self-perceived health and associated factors among industrial workers in Santa Catarina State, in southern Brazil A cross-sectional investigation was conducted with a representative sample of 2,574 subjects (625% men) Negative self-perceived health (fair or poor) was the outcome investigated in association with demographic, socioeconomic, and other health indicators Multivariate analysis was performed through logistic regression based on a hierarchical model Negative self-perceived health was exceptional (118%), but positively associated with age, leisure physical activity, perceived quality of sleeping, perceived stress, and sex Meanwhile, the outcome was negatively associated with family income and schooling Workers with higher physical demands and BMI 30 showed increased odds of negative self-perceived health No significant differences were found for marital status, binge drinking, or smoking Few associations were observed for females

TL;DR: This article introduces CE as an important theoretical framework for evolutionary ethnobiological research and presents the basic concepts and assumptions of CE, along with the adjustments that are necessary for its application in EE.
Abstract: The interest in theoretical frameworks that improve our understanding of social-ecological systems is growing within the field of ethnobiology. Several evolutionary questions may underlie the relationships between people and the natural resources that are investigated in this field. A new branch of research, known as evolutionary ethnobiology (EE), focuses on these questions and has recently been formally conceptualized. The field of cultural evolution (CE) has significantly contributed to the development of this new field, and it has introduced the Darwinian concepts of variation, competition, and heredity to studies that focus on the dynamics of local knowledge. In this article, we introduce CE as an important theoretical framework for evolutionary ethnobiological research. We present the basic concepts and assumptions of CE, along with the adjustments that are necessary for its application in EE. We discuss different ethnobiological studies in the context of this new framework and the new opportunities for research that exist in this area. We also propose a dialog that includes our findings in the context of cultural evolution.
