Extraction of proteins from buckwheat bran

Abstract: Proteins from buckwheat bran were extracted by a wet alkaline extraction process, giving a yield of 37.0%of the total nitrogen in the liquid extract, at pH of 6.5. However, the yield could be improved, given a pretreatment of the bran with carbohydrases, thus producing a yield of 56% with cellulase, 58%with pectinase, whereas the increase was minimal with hemicellulase. The maximum yield of 67.5%was obtained by synergistic action of pectinase and hemicellulase, in a pretreatment lasting for 7 h at pH of 3.7.

Notas sobre alguns morcegos da ilha de Maracá, Território Federal de Roraima (Mammalia, Chiroptera)

Abstract: Resumo Foram analisadas oito especies de morcegos (Pteronotus parnellii rubiginosus, Carollia p. perspicillata, Uroderma b. bilobatum, Uroderma magnirostrum, Chiroderma v. villosum, Artibeus fuliginosus, Desmodus r. rotundus, Molossus m. molossus) colecionados na Estacao Ecologica de Maraca, Territorio Federal de Roraima. Sao fornecidas medidas externas e cranianas dos exemplares, ao lado de observacoes taxonomicas e sobre a distribuicao geografica das especies.

Estudo dos doenças sexualmente transmissíveis no município de Londrina, Paraná, Brasil: III. A prevalência da gonorréia em 1976-1977

Abstract: Estudou-se o problema das doencas sexualmente transmissiveis a nivel local, a partir de informacoes colhidas em 4 grandes laboratorios da cidade. Estimou-se que a prevalencia de gonorreia, para um ano compreendido entre 1976 e 1977, foi de 1993,0 casos por 100.000 habitantes, valores esses dezenas de vezes maior aqueles apresentados pelas estatisticas oficiais. Analisando os servicos existentes, concluiu-se que no municipio nao existem condicoes atuais para um adequado controle da doenca.

Utilization of slaughter plant waste proteins: an investigation on the nature and some functional properties of bovine rumen tissue proteins

Abstract: Bovine rumen and skeletal muscle proteins were studied and compared. Solubility studies indicated that about 90% of the rumen proteins could be extracted at pH 3 or 10, when the tissue was well homogenized. They were least soluble in the pH range 5-6 (11 – 14%). Two protein isolates of distinct compositional differences were obtained from the pH 10 aqueous extract by successive lowering of pH to 7.0 and 5.4. The isolate at pH 7.0 contained predominantly actin and myosin, but no troponin and tropomyosin. Actin, myosin, troponin, and tropomyosin were completely precipitated at pH 5.4. The emulsifying capacity of the rumen proteins were about 30% lower than those of the skeletal muscle proteins; however, they had excellent solubility and consistency. Their whippability and foam stability were also superior to those of purified egg albumin.

Prevalência da doença de Chagas em banco de sangue através da reação de fixação de complemento e imunofluorescência indireta: discrepâncias entre as reações e possibilidade de falhas na seleção de doadores

Abstract: The complement fixation reaction (CF) and indirect immunofluorescence (IF) were used to test serum from 3,000 potential blood donors at the Blood Bank of the University Hospital, Londrina, Parano State, Brazil. A total of 7.4% of positive serological reactions was the results of the two tests being concordant in 97.1% and discordant in 2.9%. The IF test was more sensitive than CF; positive results by IF with negative or doubtful results by CF were 15 times more frequent than positive results by CF with negative or doubtful results by IF. Judging by the results of the two tests, the security of selection of acceptable blood samples was greater when doubtful results or anti complementary sera were considered positive. In another group of volunteer candidates for blood donation who had donated blood on other occasions, 450 had had one to six CF tests carried out in other laboratory. Of these, 10 (2.2%) had had doubtful or positive reactions in one or more of these previous tests but had been accepted as potential donors at the time of the present study. These results demonstra te the relative nature of the process of donor selection on the basis of serological reactions. The alternative utilization of gencian violet by hemotherapy services is discussed.

[Intracranial saccular aneurysms: experimental evaluation of intravascular therapeutic procedures].

Abstract: Studies were performed on adult mongrel dogs to evaluate the possibility of occluding saccular aneurysms with an intravascular injection of the tissue adhesive Bucrylat (isobutyl-2-cyanoacrylate) Fourteen surgically constructed carotid aneurysms were occluded by the injection of Bucrylat through a fluoroscopically positioned intra-arterial catheter Angiography performed immediately before and after injection and up to 1 month following treatment revealed progressive and persistent occlusion of the aneurysms The specimens examined histologically 1 month after the injection showed an endothelialized fibrous tissue bridge crossing the neck of the aneurysm what appear to indicate a permanent occlusion of the structures treated A similar approach to treat intracranial aneurysms will depend on advances in the field of selective intracranial catheterization that will permit safe and accurate catheterization of the aneurysm sac
