A limited survey of fumonisins in corn and corn-based products in Asian countries

Abstract: Natural occurrence of fumonisins B1 (FB1) and B2 (FB2), a promoter for hepato-carcinogenesis, was investigated in corn and corn — based products sampled in Japan, Nepal, and China by high — performance liquid chromatographic method From the 9 imported corn kernel and 6 gluten feed samples, FB1 was detected in 8 corn (06 ∼ 41μg/g) and all gluten feed (03 ∼ 24μg/g) samples, while FB2 was found in the same corn (03 ∼ 10μg/g) and 3 gluten feed (08 ∼ 85μg/g) samples ELISA analysis also revealed the contamination of aflatoxin B1 in 2 corn and all gluten feed samples along with fumonisins Of 17 corn grit samples, 14 and 5 samples were contaminated with fumonisin B1 and B2, with maximum levels of 26 and 28μg/g, respectively As for corn-based foodstuffs marketed in Japan, no significant contamination of fumonisins was observed Among 24 corn kernel samples in Nepal, 12 and 7 samples were positive for FB1 and FB2, and averaged to 06 and 16μg/g, respectively One sample showed the highest fumonisin contents as 46 and 55μg/g, respectively In corn samples harvested at Shanghai and Beijing, China, FB1 and FB2 were detected in various concentrations Mycological survey has also revealed the presence of a fumonisin — producing fungus in a crop field of Japan These findings have for the first time demonstrated high levels of contamination of fumonisins in corn and corn — based products in Asian countries Natural co — occurrence of fumonisins and aflatoxin B1 was also detected in raw materials for mixed feed

Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti L. e a culicideofauna associada em área urbana da região sul, Brasil

Abstract: Foram mostrados alguns aspectos sobre a ecologia de 11 especies de Culicidae que procriam em recipientes, em uma area urbana do Sul do Brasil. Os mais variados tipos de recipientes foram listados como eficientes criadouros para larvas de culicideos. Aedes aegypti apareceu como especie recem-introduzida e limitada somente a duas areas da cidade. As especies predominantes foram: Culex quinquefasciatus, Culex coronator, Aedes aegypti, Aedes fluviatilis e Limatus durhamii.

Direct root tip conversion of Catasetum into protocorm-like bodies. Effects of auxin and cytokinin

Abstract: Root apex conversion ofCatasetum fimbriatum into protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) can occur in the absence of any added plant growth regulator. The presence of exogenous auxins in media drastically reduced the number of PLBs formed; on the other hand the concentrations of these auxins used greatly increased the process of callus formation. No effect on the mean number of root tip conversions into PLBs was observed with chlorogenic acid. However, this process was significantly increased in one of the concentrations used of p-coumaric acid. BA did not have any effect on callus formation, but caused marked acceleration in the process of root tip conversion and on the mean number of PLBs formed. PLB formation observed in the absence of any exogenous growth substance seemed to reflect a disruption in the interactions between the excised roots and the rest of the plants. The presence of light decreased the process of conversion.

Axenic Cultivation of Trypanosomatids Found in Corn (Zea mays) and in Phytophagous Hemipterans (Leptoglossus zonatus Coreidae) and Their Experimental Transmission

Abstract: . Trypanosomatids isolated from corn seeds and from digestive tract and salivary glands of Leptoglossus zonatus (Hemiptera, Coreidae) were obtained in pure cultures. In experimental transmission, the flagellates present in naturally infected insects were able to infect laboratory-raised corn. A simplified liquid culture medium was established that increased parasite yield three- to five-fold. Cultured and cloned parasites, and forms found in insects and corn as well, were studied by light and electron microscopy. A remarkable finding was the observation that the cultured strain 163M bears a surface coat similar to that observed in naturally occurring African trypanosomes. but not observed in trypanosomes in vitro. Based on the biochemical characteristics of the arknine-ornithine cycle and on the presence of this cell coat, we propose that the strain 163M is a new species and name it Herpetomonas macgheei n. sp.

Lowering Phytic Phosphorus by Hydration of Soybeans

Abstract: Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to study the effects of three independent variables at three levels of variation (ratio of liquid-solid, temperature and time of hydration) on the phytic and inorganic phosphorus concentration of hydrated soybeans. Temperature of hydration was the most important factor in lowering phytic phosphorus. Average reduced amount of phytic phosphorus was 26% and minimum reduction was 36.1% for cotyledons soaked at 50 o C. Inorganic phosphorus, both in cotyledons and soak water, increased up to 225.8% at 50 o C

Quirópteros de Londrina, Paraná, Brasil (Mammalia, Chiroptera)

Abstract: Due to the lack of information concerning mammals in the North of Parana State, Brazil. a preliminary survey of bat species of the region of Londrina is presented. Three hundred and thirty four individuais of 18 species belonging to Phyllostomidae, Desmodontidae, Vespertilionidae and Molossidae families were collected. Data were gathered related to threir feeding habits, reproduction and time of achvity.

Evolução geotectônica da porção NE de Santa Catarina e SE do Paraná, com base em interpretações geocronológicas

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho e discutir a evolucao geotectonica de terrenos pre-cambrianos localizados na porcao nordeste de Santa Catarina e sudeste do Parana As diferencas litologicas, petrograficas, estruturais e geoquimicas, acopladas principalmente aos estudos geocronologicos, permitiram reconhecer neste setor a existencia de tres grandes dominios geotectonicos, com evolucoes proprias e distintas O primeiro dominio (Luis Alves) localiza-se na porcao meridional da area, sendo representado por rochas da facies granulito, com idades de formacao relativas ao Arqueano (2720-2580 Ma) e ao Paleoproterozoico (2250-1850 Ma) Do ponto de vista geotectonico, esses terrenos foram interpretados como representantes da porcao continental de uma microplaca, localizada entre os Cratons do Congo (Africa) e do Parana (Brasil), no Neoproterozoico No segundo dominio (Curitiba), ocorrem rochas gnaissico-migmatiticas, da facies anfibolito, associadas a granitoides deformados, distribuidos ao longo de toda porcao setentrional estudada Caracterizase por mesossomas formados no Paleoproterozoico (2150-1800 Ma), com leucossomas e porcoes graniticas do Neoproterozoico (720-550 Ma) Os dados geologicos e geocronologicos sugerem tratar-se de zona de borda da mesma Microplaca Luis Alves, intensamente deformada no Neoproterozoico (Ciclo Brasiliano) O terceiro dominio (Costeiro) ocupa parte do setor oriental, sendo representado, principalmente, por granitoides calcio-alcalinos foliados, gerados no Neoproterozoico (615-570 Ma) Adicionalmente, nos Terrenos Luis Alves e Curitiba, ocorre importante granitogenese alcalina-peralcalina (600-550 Ma), bem como intenso vulcanismo acido-intermediario (520-480 Ma) associado a evolucao das bacias molassicas, consequencia do rearranjo crustal, decorrente do espessamento litosferico produzido pelas colisoes continentais que ocorreram no Neoproterozoico com continuidade ate o Cambriano

Enfermagem médico-cirúrgica: uma nova abordagem de ensino e sua avaliação pelo aluno

Abstract: Este trabalho versa sobre a metodologia de ensino adotada pela disciplina Enfermagem Medico-Cirugica da Universidade Estadual de Londrina, modificada no sentido de torna-la centrada no aluno, com maior enfase nas relacoes interpessoais e estruturada na resolucao de problemas. Teve como objetivo verificar a percepcao dos alunos do ultimo periodo do curso em relacao ao desenvolvimento de habilidades cognitivas, afetivas e psicomotoras pela disciplina em questao, quando comparada as demais disciplinas do curso. Os dados foram coletados atraves de um questionario aplicado aos formandos dos anos de 1985 a 1990, em sessoes especificas. Verificou-se que este metodo de ensino proporcionou ao aluno uma maior integracao entre teoria e pratica, maior desenvolvimento de habilidade de pesquisa em biblioteca, participacao mais ativa no seu processo de aprendizagem e maior habilidade para exposicao oral.

Riqueza de aves da Fazenda Santa Rita, região dos Campos Gerais, Palmeira, Paraná, Brasil

Abstract: Two hundred and eighty eight bird species were registered in Santa Rita Farm, east of Parana State in Brazil (28o18'S,49o48'W), from February 1990 to January 1991. Eighty four species were registered in all 12 months and eighty three were registered once during this period. October was the richest in number of species (220) and July was the poorest (137). The natural landscape of the Santa Rita farm is composed of open field with several patches of araucaria forest (from 10 to 40 ha) and some small areas of marshland. Two hundred and eight species occurred only in one of these habitats: 163 in the forest, 35 in the open field and 10 in the marshland. The others often occurred in both forest and open field; there is a gradient of occurrence between them. Columba speciosa Gmelin, 1789; C. maculosa Temminck, 1813; Dolichonyx oryzivorus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Sporophila melanogaster (Pelzeln, 1870) were new field registers in Parana State. Because of its great number of bird species (some endangered species) and its landscape, composed of well preserved habitats, Santa Rita farm is shown as a strategic area for conservation.

An ecological study of the mosquito Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti L. and associated culicifauna in an urban area of southern Brazil

Abstract: Some aspects of the ecology of eleven species of Culicidae that were found breeding in recipients in an urban area of Southern Brazil are presented. A great variety of recipients were listed as efficient breeding sites. Apparently Aedes aegypti has been recently introduced into the region and was limited to two areas of the city. Culex quinquefasciatus, Cx. coronator, Ae. aegypti, Ae. fluviatilis e Limatus durhamii were the predominant species.

Cloned genes of the aerobactin system of virulent avian Escherichia coli do not confer virulence to recombinant strains.

Abstract: 1. We cloned the aerobactin region and its receptor from pMV14, a large nonconjugative plasmid isolated from the virulent strain UEL14, to assess the importance of the aerobactin iron uptake system as a virulence determinant in septicemic avian Escherichia coli. 2. The physical map of the region of the recombinant plasmid (pGMV1) containing the genes for synthesis of aerobactin and its receptor was very similar to the corresponding region in pABN1 containing the genetic determinants for the aerobactin system of pColV-K30. 3. The 74-kDa outer-membrane protein encoded by pGMV1 cross-reacted immunologically with the 74-kDa aerobactin receptor protein encoded by pABN1. 4. Various avirulent E. coli strains carrying the recombinant plasmid, which contains only the aerobactin system, were assayed for virulence and were found to be avirulent for chickens. Only the wild-type aerobactin-producing strain was virulent in a pathogenicity test for chickens. 5. These results show that the aerobactin system by itself does not confer virulence, and that other factors are necessary for virulence of avian strains of E. coli.

Repertoire of the acoustic communication of the azure jay Cyanocorax caeruleus (Vieillot) (Aves, Corvidae)

Abstract: The vocal repertoire of the Azure Jay Cyanocorax caeruleus (Vieillot, 1818) is approached from a quali-quantitative point of view. The qualitative analysis was carried out both in the field and in captivity: the quantitative analysis was made only in captivity. Social acoustic communication in the Azure Jay is achieved through the use of two types of call: basic and intermediate calls. Fourteen basic calls are identified and presented through sonograms: the sotto voce song (courtship call) is related only to courtship and the social call is interpreted as the song in the Azure Jay. The intermediate calls are recombinations of the basic calls uttered during an alteration in motivation level. Examples of them are presented through sonograms of vocalizations recorded during mobbing predators and intraspecific agonistic contexts. The social, social-alarm, contact, flight, proximity, threat and social identity calls were those most frequently uttered by daylight: the other calls represented around 15% of the total number of utterances. The hypothesis of the evolution in American Jays, which tends to simplification of vocal repertoire (HARDY, 1961; 1969), is analysed; C. caeruleus seems to have a small actively-used repertoire.

Latent heat measurements of the smectic A–cholesteric transition on binary mixtures

Abstract: New differential scanning calorimetry measurements of the smectic A-cholesteric latent heat of transition for binary mixtures of cholesteryl nonanoate (C 9) and cholesteryl heptanoate (C 7), cholesteryl nonanoate and cholesteryl caproate (C 6) are reported for cooling cycles. These measurements give evidence of a tricritical point at approximately the reduced temperature T SACh/T Chl ≅ 0·92 for 63·1 mol per cent C 9 in the mixture of C 6 and C 9. This tricritical point occurs at reduced temperatures and concentrations different from those already obtained for heating cycles for the same mixture.

Preparation, electronic, IR and resonance Raman spectra of two nickel dmit-piperidine mixed complexes

Abstract: The preparation of the mixed complexes [Ni(dmit)2(piperidine)2][NBu4] and [Ni(dmit)(pip)2] are reported for the first time and their electronic, IR and resonance Raman spectra are presented. The results suggest that previous assignments for bis-dmit metal complexes are not correct. In particular, the band previously assigned to an internal transition of the ligand in the visible region is now shown to originate from an interligand transition, involving molecular orbitals extensively delocalized over the molecule.

Preparation and characterization of the 1:1 inclusion compound γ-cyclodextrin/[Ni(dmit)2]1-

Abstract: The preparation of a 1:1 inclusion compound involving γ-cyclodextrin and bis(4,5-dimercapto-1,3-dithiole-2-thionato)nickelate (III) complex ion, [Ni(dmit)2]1-, is reported. The inclusion complex is characterized by UV-visible and Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis and X-ray powder diffractometry.

Abstract: Normal 0 21 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Apresentacao da exposicao "Mobilidade em processos de Gravura", da artista plastica Iara Strobel na Secretaria de Cultura/Curitiba. Observa-se este fenomeno criativo, recorrendo a uma estrategia a que chamaria de "refracao" poetica, no sentido bakhtiniano. A refracao do verbal atraves do nao verbal, permite por hipotese gerenciar uma "linguagem sem lingua", embora nao isenta de codigos a serem desvelados na operacao critica. Tenciona, nesta ocorrencia, o proprio instrumento de analise exigindo um deslocamento do pendor referencial para o poetico.
