TL;DR: From October 1987 to March 1993, 105 patients were studied who have undergone valvuloplasty with an open ring to confirm the effectiveness of the techniques employed and the results were considered excellent in 63 (84.0%) patients with either normal mitral valve or mitral regurgitation + and/or mitral stenosis +.
Abstract: From October 1987 to March 1993, 105 patients were studied who have undergone valvuloplasty with an open ring. They ranged from 5 to 79 years (mean 30); 33 (31.4%) were under 16. All patients had mitral insufficiency, alone in 62 (59.0%) and associated with mitral stenosis (double mitral lesion) in 43 (41.0%). In the majority of the cases, the aetiology was rheumatic (78.1%); active in 10 (9.5%) patients. Three patients (2.9%) were in class II, 42 (40.0%) in class III, 57 (54.3%) in class IV and 3 (2.9%) in class V. Ten patients (9.5%) had isolated ring implantation while the remaining underwent associated procedures on the leaflets, chordae and papillary muscles. There were two (1.9%) hospital deaths, and six patients (5.7%) had to be reoperated. On the 30th (mean) postoperative day, 75 (71.4%) patients were reevaluated by catheterization, echo Doppler or both to confirm the effectiveness of the techniques employed. The mitral valve was functioning normally or with mitral regurgitation + in 63 (84.0%) patients, mitral regurgitation + + in 2 (2.7%), mitral regurgitation + + + in 5 (6.7%), mitral stenosis + in 4 (5.3%), and mitral stenosis + + in 1 (1.3%) patient. The results were therefore considered excellent in 63 (84.0%) patients with either normal mitral valve or mitral regurgitation +, good in 6 (8.0%) patients with mitral regurgitation + + and/or mitral stenosis +, and poor in 6 (8.0%) patients with mitral regurgitation + + + and/or mitral stenosis + +. Two deaths (1.9%) occurred within the first 7 months of follow-up. Patients were evaluated clinically 1-67 months postoperatively (mean 27):90 (85.7%) were in class I, 4 (3.8%) in class II, 4 (3.8%) in class III and 1 (1.0%) in class IV.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

TL;DR: Lipolysis mediated by a beta-adrenergic mechanism played a significant role in promoting hyperglycemia when Iso was combined with G and C, and showed a clear relationship between hyper glycemia and lipolysis.
Abstract: The synergistic effect of combined injection of glucagon (G), cortisol (C) and phenylephrine+isoproterenol (E) during hypoglycemia in male adult Wistar rats was investigated. For this purpose we injected insulin (1 mg/kg) and 30 min later saline (controls), C (20 mg/kg), G (0.02 mg/kg), or E (1 mg/kg), individually or combined (G+C, G+E, C+E and C+G+E). All drugs were injected i.p. and all rats were killed 60 min after insulin injection. The rise in glycemia with C+G+E was greater (delta = 107 mg/dl) than the sum of the responses to injection of C, G and E individually, or in double combination plus any single hormone injection. This synergistic effect was reproduced by G + C + isoproterenol (Iso) but not by G + C + phenylephrine (delta = 0 mg/dl). The results also showed a clear relationship between hyperglycemia and lipolysis. Thus, lipolysis mediated by a beta-adrenergic mechanism played a significant role in promoting hyperglycemia when Iso was combined with G and C.

TL;DR: The etiologic diagnosis was defined by the complement fixation test (Weinberg) and/ or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for cysticercosis in the cerebrospinal fluid and there were predominancy of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and eosinosis in patients that have c.
Abstract: Twenty seven cases of neurocysticercosis, with clinical picture of acute meningitis, are described. Twenty (74.1%) patients are male; the age was 4 to 42 years (23.6 ±11.7 years). The etiologic diagnosis was defined by the complement fixation test (Weinberg) and/ or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for cysticercosis in the cerebrospinal fluid (c. s. f.). Six patients that realized cranial computerized tomographic scan ressembling neurocysticercosis. Twenty one (77.8%) have predominancy of lymphomononuclear cells in the c. s. f. obtained in the admission to the hospital; in 6 (22.2%) there were predominancy of polymorphonuclear neutrophils. In this c. s. f. there were eosinosis in four patients that have c. s. f. lymphomononuclear pleocytosis and in three that have c. s. f. neutrophyl pleocytosis, suggesting the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis. The treatment of acute neurocysticercosis was made with dexamethasone. All the patients survived and were transfered to the ambulatory of Neurology for follow-up and complementary treatment

TL;DR: In this paper, the time-dependent theory of the resonance Raman effect was employed for the calculation of the Raman excitation profiles and optical absorption spectra of the meial dithiolene species [Zn(dmit)2]2− and [Ni[dmit]2]-2− (dmit = 4,5-dimercapto-1,3-dithiolc-2-thionc).
Abstract: The time-dependent theory of the resonance Raman effect was employed for the calculation of the Raman excitation profiles and optical absorption spectra of the meial dithiolene species [Zn(dmit)2]2− and [Ni(dmit)2]2− (dmit = 4,5-dimercapto-1,3-dithiolc-2-thionc) The model adopted takes into account the three normal modes notable for their enhancement at resonance, and embodies the linear non-Condon coupling contribution. Previous calculations for these species using the transform method lead to estimates of the relative displacements of potential surface minima for the three modes considered, while the present calculations led to absolute values for such displacements. The metal-sulphur bond length is increased by 0.016 and 0.027 A in the zinc and nickel complexes, respectively.

TL;DR: In this paper, the growth conditions of V2VI3 semiconductors have been studied using the molecular beam epitaxy technique, which was applied to the growth of Sb2Te3 on Bi2Te-3 substrates.
Abstract: Epitaxial growth conditions of V2VI3 semiconductors have been studied using the molecular beam epitaxy technique, which was applied to the growth of Sb2Te3 on Bi2Te3 substrates. These substrates were prepared by gradient freeze method in a Bridgman apparatus. Ingots were cleaved along the (0001) plane. The deposition conditions have been studied as a function of two parameters: substrate temperature and flux ratios of the two elements. The quality of these epilayers was controlled by SEM and X-ray diffraction. Epilayers of good quality have been obtained for the first time.

TL;DR: It was concluded that S. intermedius is a grazer herbivore whose principal diet consists of leaves and stalks of two monocotyledonous plants: Poaceae and/or Cyperaceae.
Abstract: In order to analyse the diet of Schizodon intermedius Garavello & Britski, 1990, captures were made every season during the period of April/1990 to February/1991, using gillnets of different mesh size at Sertanopolis, a region of Parana State. An analysis of stomach fullness degree was made upon 76 individuals (including young ones). A sample of 20 adult specimens was chose to compare the morphology of the digestive tract with the diet found. It was concluded that S. intermedius is a grazer herbivore whose principal diet consists of leaves and stalks of two monocotyledonous plants: Poaceae and/or Cyperaceae. This species shows quanlitative, but not qualitative feeding seasonal variations. It was verified that intestinal quotient of the species is X = 1.34, the variation of gill rakers number is 18-23 and of the pyloric caeca number is 15-25. These morphological characteristics found in this species are typical of herbivore fishes.

TL;DR: Both isoinhibitors were stable at different pHs, relatively stable at 98C, and resistant to proteolysis by trypsin, chymotrypsin and pepsin, and exhibited specificity to human salivary and porcine pancreatic α-amylases, but had no inhibitory activity on Bacillus subtillis, Aspergillus oryzae and endogenous triticale α- amylases.
Abstract: A total of six α-amylase inhibitory proteins (isoinhibitors) were extracted from triticale (Triticum X Secale) seeds and two of them were purified to homogeneity. The isoinhibitors were extracted by 70% ethanol and produced, by Sephadex G-100 chromatography, two peaks that exhibited α-amylase inhibitory activity. Further purification of the most active peak by DEAE-cellulose chromatography resulted in six active fractions. Two of them designated as TAI-5 and TAI-6, considered to be homogeneous by both acidic and alkaline electrophoresis, were partially characterized. The isoelectric points were 4.80 and 4.70, and the molecular weights 39, 200 and 29, 200, respectively. Under dissociating conditions the molecular weights were 13, 500 and 13, 000, suggesting that the isoinhibitors are composed of three and two subunits, respectively. Both isoinhibitors were stable at different pHs, relatively stable at 98C, and resistant to proteolysis by trypsin, chymotrypsin and pepsin. The optimum interaction pH for both isoinhibitors with human salivary amylase was 7.9. They exhibited specificity to human salivary and porcine pancreatic α-amylases, but had no inhibitory activity on Bacillus subtillis, Aspergillus oryzae and endogenous triticale α-amylases.

TL;DR: The study of the perpendicular part of the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectra of Cu 2+, characterized by a variable number of lines when doped in Ammonium Bromide, has been extended examining crystals grown in acidic solution (pH≈1.6) as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The study of the perpendicular part of the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectra of Cu 2+ , characterized by a variable number of lines when doped in Ammonium Bromide, has been extended examining crystals grown in acidic solution (pH≈1.6). The 19 lines of the spectra that have been observed at 300 K are interpreted like in our quite recent study of Cu 2+ :NH 4 Br (basic). The new hf parameter is A ⊥ =66±2 (the values of A are given in units of 10 -4 cm -1 ) and the shf parameter is A ′ ⊥ =47±3. At 77 K the spectra have ten lines and are interpreted combining seven shf lines and four hf lines. The parameters determined are: g z =2.048±0.005, g x =2.284±0.005, g y =2.189±0.005, A z =108±3, A x =78±3, A y =0±3, A x ′ =0±3 and A y ′ =76±3. The hf and shf interactions are in the same order and are responsible for the characteristic spectra.

TL;DR: Results show the distribution of iron-regulated outer-membrane proteins among avian E. coli and suggest that the protein of approximately 74 kDa may be important for the virulence of these strains.
Abstract: 1. Outer-membrane protein patterns of Escherichia coli recovered from the peritoneal cavities of infected guinea pigs and grown in medium M9 containing 2,2'-dipyridyl were studied by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) to determine whether in vivo conditions of growth affected the expression of these bacterial surface proteins. 2. Eleven strains of septicemic E. coli studied in vitro under conditions of iron restriction expressed iron-regulated outer-membrane proteins, mainly the protein of approximately 74 kDa, whereas avirulent strains grown under similar conditions did not present the 74-kDa protein. 3. These results show the distribution of iron-regulated outer-membrane proteins among avian E. coli and suggest that the protein of approximately 74 kDa may be important for the virulence of these strains.
