TL;DR: A novel prion disease variant characterized by an early onset and long duration of the symptoms, severe spongiform change with minimal gliosis, associated with a prion protein gene mutation at codon 183 is identified.
Abstract: Human prion diseases include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker disease, fatal familial insomnia, and kuru. Each of these diseases has a specific clinical presentation while spongiform encephalopathy, neuronal loss, and gliosis are their neuropathological hallmarks. We studied a Brazilian family with an autosomal dominant form of dementia. Nine members of the family were affected by a dementia with frontotemporal clinical features, with a mean age at onset of 44.8 ± 3.8 years and a mean duration of symptoms of 4.2 ± 2.4 years. Neuropathological examination of 3 patients showed severe spongiform change and neuronal loss in the deep cortical layers and in the putamen, but minimal gliosis in the most severely affected areas. The putamen and cerebellum, but not other areas of the affected brain, displayed prion protein immunoreactivity. A novel prion protein gene mutation causing a nonconservative substitution at codon 183 was identified in 2 neuropathologically confirmed affected individuals (mother and son). The mutation was transmitted in a mendelian fashion to 12 members of the family. Therefore, we identified a novel prion disease variant characterized by an early onset and long duration of the symptoms, severe spongiform change with minimal gliosis, associated with a prion protein gene mutation at codon 183.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of storage temperature and time on orange juice concentrates were studied for samples irradiated with 25, 50 and 75 kGy doses from a gamma-ray source as well as for untreated samples.
Abstract: Effects of storage temperature and time on orange juice concentrates were studied for samples irradiated with 25, 50 and 75 kGy doses from a gamma-ray source as well as for untreated samples Samples were stored at 0, 5 and 25 C for periods of 1, 30, 60 and 90 days “Quantitative Descriptive Analysis” was used to measure concentrate juice quality Samples stored for more than one day lost quality as indicated by increases in ratings for “bitterness”, “medicinal” and “cooked” attributes Storage at 0 and 5C seemed to have lesser effect on “sweetness”, “oily”, “acidic” and “medicinal” characteristic than those evaluated for samples stores at 25C Effect of radiation dose on flavor and aroma attributes depended on storage temperature and time In most cases, higher doses resulted in lower “orange” and higher “bitter”, “medicinal” and “cooked” ratings These results indicated that 25 kGy combined with 0 and 5C of storage conditions, provided a feasible approach for preserving juice concentrate

Abstract: A neutron probe calibration correction is proposed in order to reduce soil water content variability, assumed to be a consequence of improper calibrations relations. The time stability of spatially measured soil water content data is used to correct the intercepts of linear calibration relations. This procedure reduced the coefficients of variation of soil water content data from 4 to less than 2% in a Rhodic Kanhapludalf.

TL;DR: Although a cytotoxic activity was demonstrated in filtrates of some S. marcescens strains, further studies should be performed to assess the role of this toxin in pathogenesis.
Abstract: Cytotoxin production was studied in 60 Serratia marcescens strainsisolated from hospitalized patients. Association of cytotoxic activitywith serotype, source of isolation and presence of plasmids was alsoevaluated. Thirteen of the 60 S. marcescens strains produced a cyto-toxic effect on Vero cells. These strains were isolated from distinctclinical sources and classified into seven different serotypes (O1:H7;O4:NM; O10:NT; O19:NM; O6,14:H4; O6,14:NM and O6,14:H1).No relationship was observed between cytotoxic activity and clinicalsource or serotypes of the strains. Plasmids from five cytotoxin-producing S. marcescens strains were transferred to E. coli K12/711.The transconjugants did not exhibit cytotoxicity, indicating that thecytotoxic effect is not plasmid-mediated among these strains. Al-though a cytotoxic activity was demonstrated in filtrates of some S.marcescens strains, further studies should be performed to assess therole of this toxin in pathogenesis. Correspondence A.L.C. TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated 80 dogs with clinical signs and histological lesions characteristic of distemper encephalomyelitis and found that Lenz inclusion bodies in the central nervous system were included in the study.
Abstract: Eighty-one dogs with clinical signs and histological lesions characteristic of distemper encephalomyelitis were evaluated. Only dogs with Lenz inclusion bodies in the central nervous system were included in the study. High prevalent findings included: changes in postural reactions (87.65%), decreased tear production (83.95%), myoclonus (75.30%), paresis (69.12%), conjunctivitis (56.79%), chorioretinitis/digital and nasal hyperkeratosis (51.85%). Anemia (48.05%), lymphopenia (51.95%), and mild changes in the cerebrospinal fluid characterized by increase in total protein (77.33%) and lymphocytic pleocytosis (50.72%) were common laboratorial findings. Presence of Lenz inclusions bodies in tissues other than nervous system varied from 30 to 45%, with a higher frequence in the limph nodes. Other abnormalities in physical, neurological and laboratorial examinations were not helpful in establishing the diagnosis. Most animals examined were not properly vaccinated.

TL;DR: In this article, rice hulls were pretreated with an alkaline (pH 11.5) solution of hydrogen peroxide (1%) and then extruded in a single-screw extruder.
Abstract: Rice hulls were pretreated with an alkaline (pH 11.5) solution of hydrogen peroxide (1%) and then extruded. Pretreatment of rice hulls (4% db) at 50°C for 12 hr promoted 94.4% silica reduction, caused lignin solubilization and increased water absorption index (54%) and swollen volume (44%). The effects of temperature (125, 175, and 225°C), moisture content (25, 30, and 35%) and screw speed (120, 140, and 160 rpm) on water absorption and swollen volume of rice hulls fiber were evaluated after extrusion in a single-screw extruder. Operational conditions that produced the most modified product with regard to the functional properties were: 125°C, 35% moisture, and 120 rpm. Extruded fiber had a water absorption index 95% higher and swollen volume 138% higher than the unprocessed material. Microscopic examination showed a slight effect on the hulls epidermis after pretreatment, while extrusion promoted cellular structure disruption.

TL;DR: The genetic gains by selection were smaller than those obtained by direct selection, but even so they were considered noteworthy and the VPW may be an efficient way of selection in large populations for stink bug resistance.
Abstract: An experiment was carried out at the State University of Londrina School Farm in a randomized complete blocks design with three replications; the plots underwent natural stink bug attacks to check correlations existing among agronomic traits and stink bug damage in 33 F8 pure lines soybean. The seed size trait was measured by the weight of a hundred seeds (WHS) and the percentage of stink bug damage seeds (PDS) was measured by staining the seeds with tetrazolium at 0.01%. Seeds were considered damaged with at least one puncture and or with marks characteristic of stink bug. The phenotypic and genotypic correlations between the WHS and the PDS seeds were positive, being 0.51 and 0.67 ± 0.19, respectively. The relationship between the visual pod width (VPW) and PDS was also significant, being 0.41 and 0.54 ± 0.19 for phenotypic and genotypic correlations, respectively. Thus the breeder can select lines for stink bug resistance indirectly either by WHS or VPW. These two traits are very easy to assess when compared with the assessment of PDS damage, allowing the use of larger populations. However, in this case, the genetic gains by selection were smaller than those obtained by direct selection, but even so they were considered noteworthy. The VPW may be an efficient way of selection in large populations for stink bug resistance.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the time evolution of the population inversion as well as the $Q$ function for center-of-mass motion for a two-level ion, interacting with single-mode laser light field, in an anharmonic-oscillator trap.
Abstract: We investigate the time evolution of the population inversion as well as the $Q$ function for center-of-mass motion for a two-level ion, interacting with single-mode laser light field, in an anharmonic-oscillator trap. The anharmonicities of the trap are quantified in terms of the deformation parameter of the $q$-analog trap. For $\ensuremath{\tau}=0.003$ ${(q=e}^{\ensuremath{\tau}})$ the collapses and revivals of population inversion become well-defined facilitating experimental observation, but for large $\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\sim}0.1$ the time dependence of population inversion is completely wiped out. The quasiprobability function shows an atypical behavior with a single peak at $t=0$ splitting up into as many as seven fragments (at $t=130$) during collapse and at a later time these segments come together to signal the revival of population inversion. A small degree of anharmonicity is seen to enhance the coherence of the ion-trap system, whereas for large $\ensuremath{\tau}$ ($\ensuremath{\sim}0.1$ in the present context) the coherence is completely lost.

TL;DR: In this article, factorial design calculations for the vibrational frequencies and infrared intensities of CH2F2 are reported, and principal component projections of theoretical frequency and intensity results are shown to provide accurate graphical representations of how well these results agree with the experimental values.
Abstract: Factorial design calculations for the vibrational frequencies and infrared intensities of CH2F2 are reported. Vibrational frequencies decrease by about 100 cm−1 compared with results obtained from Hartree-Fock wave functions when the second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation is applied. The inclusion of polarization functions increases the stretching frequencies by about 100 cm−1 and the CH2 and CF2 angular vibrations by about 50 cm−1, whereas it lowers the values of the CH stretching frequencies. CH2F2 calculated frequencies, which are found to have similar factorial design effects, also have optimal calculated results for the same wave function. Principal component projections of theoretical frequency and intensity results are shown to provide accurate graphical representations of how well these results agree with the experimental values. The factorial design models and principal component graphs of CH2F2 are found to be very similar to those of CH3F for the calculated frequencies. However, these results are quite different for the calculated infrared intensities.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the geometry of the matter flow which leads to the formation of one-dimensional walls above the magnetic Freedericksz threshold in some nematic materials.
Abstract: We study the geometry of the matter flow which leads to the formation of one-dimensional walls above the magnetic Fr\'eedericksz threshold in some nematic materials. The corresponding anisotropic Navier-Stokes equation, subject to the appropriate boundary conditions, is solved. We show analytically that the one-dimensional nature of the observed walls arises from the combination of the planar geometry of the director, imposed before the magnetic field is turned on, the anisotropic viscosity of the nematic material, and the saturated profile of the director along the direction of the magnetic field. The matter flow along the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field is analytically studied, and the conditions that restrict it to the edge of the sample are shown. The influence of this transverse flow of matter on the bending profile of the director is also analyzed.

Abstract: Indian ceramic fragments from the region of Londrina, at the north of Parana state, south of Brazil, belonging to the “Padre Carlos Weiss” Museum archaeological collection, were studied by EDXRF, RBS and Gamma Ray Transmission.Besides ceramic pastes’ elements, it was also possible to detect some elements of the plastic decoration remains. Quantitative determination of the pastes composition was obtained and compared with chemical analysis by atomic emission spectroscopy. The fragments were also analyzed by gamma ray transmission in order to inspect their internal structure and homogeneity. The densitometric analysis clearly showed very differentiated ceramic pastes, both in homogeneity and density, being possible the characterization of some ceramic paste manufacture techniques, as the inclusion of small ceramic fragments as antiplastic
