TL;DR: Evidence of the antiinflammatory and analgesic activities of anethole in acute and persistent inflammation models is provided.
Abstract: Anethole has been reported to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiinflammatory, and anesthetic properties. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of anethole in two pain models of inflammatory origin: acute inflammation induced by carrageenan and persistent inflammation induced by Complete Freund’s adjuvant. We evaluated the effects of anethole (125, 250, and 500 mg/kg) on the development of paw oedema and mechanical hypernociception. The liver was collected for histological analysis. Paw skin was collected to determine the levels of the cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-17 (IL-17), and myeloperoxidase activity. Blood was collected to assess alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST). The chemical composition of star anise oil was determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), showing a presence of anethole of 98.1 %. Oral pretreatment with anethole in mice inhibited paw oedema, mechanical pernociception, myelopewroxidase activity, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-17 levels in acute and persistent inflammation models. Additionally, anethole treatment did not alter prostaglandin E2-induced mechanical hypernociception. Possible side effects were also examined. Seven-day anethole treatment did not alter plasma AST and ALT levels, and the histological profile of liver tissue was normal. The present study provides evidence of the antiinflammatory and analgesic activities of anethole in acute and persistent inflammation models.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the natural honeys possess in vitro antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains.
Abstract: Several studies have tested antimicrobial activity of combinations of honey and various substances. In this study, we tested a combination of two stingless bee honeys against various bacterial strains. In particular: the antibacterial activity of honeys produced by Scaptotrigona bipunctata (SB) and Scaptotrigona postica (SP) was evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains by agar well diffusion assays, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assessment, construction of growth and viability curves and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The interaction of the two honeys was also evaluated by the checkerboard assay. Inhibition zones ranged from 8 to 22 mm. The MIC values of the individual honeys ranged from 0.62 to 10% (v v−1) and decreased to 1/4 to 1/32 when the honeys were combined. SEM images showed division inhibition and cell wall disruption for the SB and SP honeys, respectively, and these alterations were observed in same field when the SB and SP honeys were combined. This study demonstrated that the natural honeys possess in vitro antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains. Combination of the SB and SP honeys could lead to the development of new broad-spectrum antimicrobials that have the potential to prevent the emergence of resistant bacterial strains.

TL;DR: The results show that DFB can cause health disorders in fish and further studies are required to better define its safe use in aquaculture.
Abstract: The effects of diflubenzuron (DFB), an insecticide to control ectoparasites in fish farms, on muscle acetylcholinesterase (AChE), detoxifying and antioxidant enzymes, hematological and physiological parameters, and liver histopathology were evaluated in Prochilodus lineatus after 6, 24 and 96 h of exposure to 25 mg L − 1 of DFB. The insecticide caused a reduction in the number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin content after 96 h exposure, probably due to hemolysis. Hyperglycemic response indicated energy mobilization, and may have contributed to the increase in osmolarity after 96 h exposure to DFB. The induction of glutathione- S -transferase (GST) and catalase activities in liver pointed to the activation of xenobiotic metabolic pathways and antioxidant defenses. The decrease in muscle AChE at all experimental times showed that DFB is an AChE inhibitor. In addition, DFB induced hepatic alterations that might impair normal liver functions. These results show that DFB can cause health disorders in fish and further studies are required to better define its safe use in aquaculture.

TL;DR: Germination speed was significantly higher for seeds treated with GA3 50 ppm and GA3 100 ppm, and the treatment of GA350 ppm was superior for custard apple, with 75% of germination, while GA3100 ppm had 44%, and the others had 2.5 - 3.7%.
Abstract: Annonas are propagated mainly by grafting and rootstocks are obtained usually by seeds. Their seeds have substances that inhibit germination and the seed coat also difficults seedling emergence. This trial evaluated the germination of seeds of custard apple (Annona squamosa L.) and of atemoya cultivars 'PR-1', 'PR-3', and 'Gefner' (Annona cherimola Mill. X Annona squamosa L.) with treatments as follows (soaking during 24 hours): gibberellic acid (GA3) 50 ppm; GA3 100 ppm; water 5oC; water 30oC; and control. All treatments (except control) were preceded by sandpaper scarification. The treatments of GA3 50 and 100 ppm had the same results, providing 55 - 67% of germination for 'Gefner' and 'PR-3', significantly superior to the other treatments with 1 - 21%. For 'PR-1' this difference was also verified, with germination of 35 - 36 % for the treatments with GA3 and 1 - 2% for the others. The treatment of GA3 50 ppm was superior for custard apple, with 75% of germination, while GA3 100 ppm had 44%, and the others had 2.5 - 3.7%. Germination speed was significantly higher for seeds treated with GA3 50 ppm and GA3 100 ppm.
