Abstract: Aim: Eye drops are the most used dosage form by the ocular route, in spite of their low bioavailability. Due to their properties and numerous advantages, microemulsions are promising systems for topical ocular drug delivery. They can increase water solubility of the drug and enhance drug absorption into the eye. The present study describes the development and characterization of an oil-in-water microemulsion containing dexamethasone and the evaluation of its pharmacokinetics in rabbits after topical ocular application. Methods: The microemulsion was prepared by the titration technique. Its physico-chemical characteristics and stability were determined. The ocular irritation test and the pharmacokinetics of this system were studied in white rabbits. Results: The developed system showed an acceptable physico-chemical behaviour and presented good stability for 3 months. The ocular irritation test used suggested that the microemulsion did not provide significant alteration to eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea and iris. This formulation showed greater penetration of dexamethasone in the anterior segment of the eye and also release of the drug for a longer time when compared with a conventional preparation. The area under the curve obtained for the microemulsion system was more than twofold higher than that of the conventional preparation (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The microemulsion-based dexamethasone eye drop is advantageous for ophthalmic use because it is well-tolerated in the eye and seemed to provide a higher degree of bioavailability. The developed system shows greater penetration in the eye, allowing the possibility of decreasing the number of applications of eye drops per day.

Abstract: Bamboo cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were successfully prepared from the sulfuric acid hydrolysis of bamboo bleached fibers. Reaction parameters such as temperature, acid-to-pulp ratio and hydrolysis time were varied over a limited range and conditions for the preparation of individual bamboo nanorods with a yield of 30 % were identified. The characteristics of bamboo CNCs were compared with those of CNCs obtained from three other sources, namely eucalyptus, sisal and curaua, prepared using already reported conditions. The shape and size of all four types of CNCs were investigated by complementary techniques, namely transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering and X-ray diffraction. The surface charge of the nanocrystals was determined by conductometric titration and zeta potential measurements. In all cases, negatively charged ribbon-like nanoparticles constituted of a few laterally associated elementary crystallites were observed. The influence of the reaction parameters on the CNC characteristics was discussed and compared with the data reported in the literature.

Abstract: For any given animal, the sources of mechanical disturbances inducing tissue deformation define environment from the perspective of the animal's haptic perceptual system. The system's achievements include perceiving the body, attachments to the body, and the surfaces and substances adjacent to the body. Among the perceptual systems, it stands alone in having no defined medium. There is no articulated functional equivalent to air and water, the media that make possible the energy transmissions and diffusions underpinning the other perceptual systems. To identify the haptic system's medium the authors focus on connective tissue and the conjunction of muscular, connective tissue net, and skeletal (MCS) as the body's proper characterization. The challenge is a biophysical formulation of MCS as a continuum that, similar to air and water, is homogeneous and isotropic.
