Abstract: Dysmenorrhea is a common symptom secondary to various gynecological disorders, but it is also represented in most women as a primary form of disease. Pain associated with dysmenorrhea is caused by hypersecretion of prostaglandins and an increased uterine contractility. The primary dysmenorrhea is quite frequent in young women and remains with a good prognosis, even though it is associated with low quality of life. The secondary forms of dysmenorrhea are associated with endometriosis and adenomyosis and may represent the key symptom. The diagnosis is suspected on the basis of the clinical history and the physical examination and can be confirmed by ultrasound, which is very useful to exclude some secondary causes of dysmenorrhea, such as endometriosis and adenomyosis. The treatment options include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs alone or combined with oral contraceptives or progestins.

Abstract: Summary 1. Exotic invasive species modify natural food webs in a way frequently hard to predict. In several aquatic environments in Brazil the introduction of Oreochromis niloticus (tilapia) was followed by changes in water quality. Yet, because of its rapid and easy growth, this fish has been used in many aquaculture programmes around the country. 2. To measure the effects of tilapia on the phytoplankton community and on water conditions of a large tropical reservoir in south-eastern Brazil (Furnas Reservoir), we performed two in situ experiments using three controls (no fish) and three tilapia enclosures (high fish density). Abiotic and biotic parameters were measured at 4 day intervals for 28 days. 3. Fish presence increased nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability (ammonium 260 and 70% mean increase – first and second experiment; and total phosphorus 540 and 270% mean increase) via excretion. Nutrient recycling by fish can thus be significant in the nutrient dynamics of the reservoir. The higher chlorophyll a concentration in the experimental fish tanks (86 and 34 μg L−1, first and second experiment, respectively) was the result of a positive bottom-up effect on the phytoplankton community (approximately 2 μg L−1 in the reservoir and control tank). 4. Because tilapia feed selectively on large algae (mainly cyanobacteria and diatoms), several small-sized or mucilaginous colonial chlorophyceans proliferated at the end of the experiments. Thus, the trophic cascade revealed strong influences on algal composition as well as on biomass. 5. Tilapia can contribute to the eutrophication of a waterbody by both top-down and bottom-up forces. In particular, by supplying considerable amount of nutrients it promotes the increase of fast growing algae. Tilapia must be used cautiously in aquaculture to avoid unexpected environmental degradation.

Abstract: Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have emerged as a new two-dimensional material's field since the monolayer and few-layer limits show different properties when compared to each other and to their respective bulk materials. For example, in some cases when the bulk material is exfoliated down to a monolayer, an indirect-to-direct band gap in the visible range is observed. The number of layers $N$ ($N$ even or odd) drives changes in space-group symmetry that are reflected in the optical properties. The understanding of the space-group symmetry as a function of the number of layers is therefore important for the correct interpretation of the experimental data. Here we present a thorough group theory study of the symmetry aspects relevant to optical and spectroscopic analysis, for the most common polytypes of TMDCs, i.e., $2Ha$, $2Hc$ and $1T$, as a function of the number of layers. Real space symmetries, the group of the wave vectors, the relevance of inversion symmetry, irreducible representations of the vibrational modes, optical activity, and Raman tensors are discussed.

Abstract: Germ cell survival and development critically depend on the cells' contact with Sertoli cells in the vertebrate testis. Fish and amphibians are different from mammals in that they show a cystic type of spermatogenesis in which a single germ cell clone is enclosed by and accompanied through the different stages of spermatogenesis by an accompanying group of Sertoli cells. We show that in maturing and adult testes from African catfish and Nile tilapia, Sertoli cell proliferation occurs primarily during spermatogonial proliferation, allowing the cyst-forming Sertoli cells to provide the increasing space required by the growing germ cell clone. In this regard, coincident with a dramatic increase in cyst volume and number of germ cells per cyst, in Nile tilapia, the number of Sertoli cells per cyst was strikingly increased from primary spermatogonia to spermatocyte cysts. Abstract: Neotropical seasonally dry forests are found from northwestern Mexico to northern Argentina and southwestern Brazil in separate areas of varying size (fig.1-1). Their different variants have not always been considered the same vegetation type (e.g., Hueck 1978) or biogeographic unit (e.g., Cabrera and Willink 1980), but recent work has helped to define the extent, distribution, and phytogeography of seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) as a coherent biome with a wide Neotropical distribution (Prado and Gibbs 1993; Pennington et al. 2000; Pennington, Lewis et al. 2006). This unified interpretation is important both for biogeographic inference and for setting conservation priorities in Neotropical SDTF, which is the most threatened tropical forest type in the world (Miles et al. 2006).
