Abstract: There has been a resurgence of interest in multiagent reinforcement learning (MARL), due partly to the recent success of deep neural networks. The simplest form of MARL is independent reinforcement learning (InRL), where each agent treats all of its experience as part of its (non stationary) environment. In this paper, we first observe that policies learned using InRL can overfit to the other agents' policies during training, failing to sufficiently generalize during execution. We introduce a new metric, joint-policy correlation, to quantify this effect. We describe a meta-algorithm for general MARL, based on approximate best responses to mixtures of policies generated using deep reinforcement learning, and empirical game theoretic analysis to compute meta-strategies for policy selection. The meta-algorithm generalizes previous algorithms such as InRL, iterated best response, double oracle, and fictitious play. Then, we propose a scalable implementation which reduces the memory requirement using decoupled meta-solvers. Finally, we demonstrate the generality of the resulting policies in three partially observable settings: gridworld coordination problems, emergent language games, and poker.

Abstract: Arterioles and sinusoids of the bone marrow (BM) are accompanied by stromal cells that express nerve/glial antigen 2 (NG2) and leptin receptor (LepR), and constitute specialized niches that regulate quiescence and proliferation of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). However, how niche cells differentially regulate HSC functions remains unknown. Here, we show that the effects of cytokines regulating HSC functions are dependent on the producing cell sources. Deletion of chemokine C-X-C motif ligand 12 (Cxcl12) or stem cell factor (Scf) from all perivascular cells marked by nestin-GFP dramatically depleted BM HSCs. Selective Cxcl12 deletion from arteriolar NG2+ cells, but not from sinusoidal LepR+ cells, caused HSC reductions and altered HSC localization in BM. By contrast, deletion of Scf in LepR+ cells, but not NG2+ cells, led to reductions in BM HSC numbers. These results uncover distinct contributions of cytokines derived from perivascular cells in separate vascular niches to HSC maintenance.

Abstract: The cytokine profile produced by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in response to leishmania antigens and the ability of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) to modulate the immune response were evaluated in 21 mucosal leishmaniasis patients. Patients with mucosal disease exhibited increased gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) secretion and decreased IL-10 secretion compared to patients with classical cutaneous leishmaniasis. CD4+ Th1 cells were the main source of IFN-γ and TNF-α production in mucosal leishmaniasis patients. Evaluation of cytokine gene expression in PBMC of these patients showed that there was strong up-regulation of IFN-γ transcripts upon stimulation with leishmania antigen, in contrast to the baseline levels of IL-10 mRNA. IL-10 suppressed IFN-γ production by 48% in cell cultures from cutaneous leishmaniasis patients and by 86% in cell cultures from healthy subjects stimulated with purified protein derivative, whereas in similar conditions IL-10 suppressed IFN-γ production by 19% in cell cultures from mucosal leishmaniasis patients stimulated with leishmania antigen. TGF-β suppressed IFN-γ levels to a greater extent in healthy subjects than in mucosal leishmaniasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis patients. These data indicate that a poorly modulated T-cell response in mucosal leishmaniasis patients leads to production of high levels of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IFN-γ and TNF-α, as well as a decreased ability of IL-10 and TGF-β to modulate this response. These abnormalities may be the basis for the pathological findings observed in this disease.

Abstract: A polymorphic microsatellite (Y-27H39) based on a (GATA) n repeat was recently discovered on the short arm of the human Y chromosome. We have used a simple technique based on polymerase chain reaction amplification and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by highly sensitive silver staining to study the inheritance, the genetic stability and the allele frequency distribution of this polymorphism in the Brazilian population. We have analyzed 100 randomly chosen Caucasian Brazilian father-son pairs with established paternity. Five alleles, four base-pairs apart, were easily distinguishable. Their frequencies were: A (186 bp), 0.19; B (190 bp), 0.49; C (194 bp), 0.24; D (198 bp), 0.07; E (202 bp), 0.01. In all father-son pairs, there was complete allelic concordance. From these data, the probability of discrimination for forensic cases and the average probability of exclusion for paternity cases were both calculated to be 0.66.
