TL;DR: In this article, a nonlinear quantum transport theory for many-body systems arbitrarily far away from equilibrium, based on the nonequilibrium statistical operator method, is discussed, and an iterative process is described that allows for the calculation of the collision operator in a series of instantaneous in time partial contributions of ever increasing power in the interaction strengths.
Abstract: A nonlinear quantum transport theory for many-body systems arbitrarily far away from equilibrium, based on the nonequilibrium statistical operator method, is discussed. An iterative process is described that allows for the calculation of the collision operator in a series of instantaneous in time partial contributions of ever increasing power in the interaction strengths. These partial collision operators are shown to be composed of three contributions to the dissipative processes: one is a direct result of the collisions, another is accounted for in the internal state variables, and the third arises from memory effects. In the lowest order, the so-called linear theory of relaxation, the equations become Markovian.

TL;DR: Ecological studies including occurrence, relative abundance and spatial distribution of 15 species of Brachyura, as well as the fluctuation in the annual cycle are carried out in mangrove during the year 1986, where Chasmagnathus granulata was the most abundant specie.
Abstract: Ecological studies including occurrence, relative abundance and spatial distribution of 15 species of Brachyura, as well as the fluctuation in the annual cycle are carried out in mangrove (27o 34' 14" and 27o 35' 31" L.S.; 48o 30' 07"and 48o 31' 33" L. W.), during the year 1986. The hydrological parameters temperature, salinity and pH of surface and intersticial waters were also studied. Chasmagnathus granulata was the most abundant specie, followed by Uca uruguayensis, Aratus pisonii and Callinectes danae. The number of males was higher than females. In the spring a larger rate of Catches occurred. The species Eurytium limosum, Cardisoma guanhumi that had the state of Sao Paulo as their austral boundaru and Uca maracoani the state of Parana, have now their boundaries of distribution expanded is for as the City of Florianopolis, in the state of Santa Catarina.

TL;DR: Jatrophone (JAT), a diterpene isolated from the plant Jatropha elliptica, caused a concentration-dependent relaxation effect against acetylcholine (Ach)-oxytocin (Ot)- and KCl-induced uterine sustained contraction and inhibited CaCl2-induced contraction in K+-depolarized preparations.
Abstract: 1. Jatrophone (JAT), a diterpene isolated from the plant Jatropha elliptica (1-300 microM), caused a concentration-dependent relaxation effect against acetylcholine (Ach)-oxytocin (Ot)- and KCl-induced uterine sustained contraction. The relative potency order was: Ach greater than Ot greater than KCl. 2. The relaxant effect of JAT was not modified by phorbol ester, forskolin, MIX, TMB-8 and W-7. The increase concentration of calcium (0.2-2 mM) in the medium did not reverse the inhibitory effect caused by JAT. 3. Pre-incubation of the preparations with JAT (16-32 microM) for 20 min, caused a concentration-dependent inhibition of KCl-induced contractile response. At 30 microM, JAT inhibited in an apparently non-competitive manner CaCl2-induced contraction in K+-depolarized preparations. High concentrations of JAT (100 microM) also caused a time-dependent relaxation in CaCl2-induced sustained uterine contraction (T1/2 = approx. 15 min). 4. JAT (30 microM) inhibited the dihydropyridine calcium channel agonist Bay K 8644-induced uterine contraction in an apparently non-competitive fashion, while verapamil (0.1 microM) caused an rightward displacement of Bay K 8644 contraction and marked inhibition of the maximal response.

TL;DR: The anxiolytic effect of kynurenic acid detected in the elevated plus-maze strengthens the proposal that glutamatergic neurons of the dorsal periaqueductal gray matter play an important role in anxiety.
Abstract: The effect of kynurenic acid (20 to 160 nmol) microinjected into the dorsal periaqueductal gray matter was measured in rats placed in an elevated plus-maze. Microinjection of 160 nmol of kynurenic acid increased the percentages of open arm entries and of time spent in the open arms. Both of these measures may be considered indexes of anxiolysis. Although kynurenic acid also increased the total number of entries, analysis of covariance shows that the increase in open arm entries is independent of the effect on closed arm entries. Thus, the anxiolytic effect of kynurenic acid detected in the elevated plus-maze strengthens the proposal that glutamatergic neurons of the dorsal periaqueductal gray matter play an important role in anxiety.

TL;DR: It appears that xanthoxyline induces a direct and non-selective inhibition of contractions triggered by agonists or electrical stimulation of smooth and cardiac muscle preparations.
Abstract: The inhibitory action of the major constituent of Sebastiania schottiana (Euphorbiaceae), 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxyacetophenone (xanthoxyline) on contractions induced by agonists and electrical stimulation of smooth and cardiac muscle preparations was analysed. Xanthoxyline (30 to 300 microM) inhibited contractions of the rat uterus, guinea-pig ileum, and urinary bladder induced by several agonists in a non-competitive, non-selective, concentration-related manner, with the IC50's ranging between 47 and 190 microM. Twitches evoked by electrical-stimulation of strips of guinea-pig longitudinal ileum, urinary bladder, dog ureter, and rat left atrium were also inhibited dose-dependently by cumulative additions of xanthoxyline (IC50's between 50 and 480 microM). Xanthoxyline was found to be a potent inhibitor of spontaneous contractions of the circular smooth muscle layer of the dog ureter, yielding an IC50 of 54 microM. Repeated washing of all preparations completely reversed the inhibitory effects of xanthoxyline. Therefore, it appears that xanthoxyline induces a direct and non-selective inhibition of contractions triggered by agonists or electrical stimulation of smooth and cardiac muscle preparations. The elucidation of the mechanism(s) by which xanthoxyline induced muscle relaxation requires further investigations.

TL;DR: Comparative data on the levels of citrulline or other free amino acids in Alnus glutinosa are unlikely to be useful as an index of nitrogen fixation, under most experimental conditions.
Abstract: Citrulline was the major amino acid in root pressure sap, stem sap and stem wood from Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn. plants relying on fixed nitrogen or, partly or wholly, on mineral nitrogen for growth. Glutamine increased in prominence in plants assimilating mineral nitrogen but asparagine remained a relatively insignificant component. Differences in the relative amounts of the free amino compounds of stem sap from nitrogen-fixing and mineral nitrogen-fed plants were usually small compared to differences between plants fed different sources of mineral nitrogen. In contrast, relatively high values for the ratios of citrulline/total free amino nitrogen compounds and particularly of citrulline/amides in root pressure sap distinguished nitrogen-fixing plants from those receiving mineral nitrogen. Although the amino acid ratios of stem wood extracts showed closer similarity to those for root pressure sap than stem sap, the seasonal accumulation of citrulline, possibly as a storage amino acid, in stem wood from field-grown plants negated the possibility of utilising stem wood analyses as an indicator of the form of nitrogen assimilation. Comparative data on the levels of citrulline or other free amino acids in Alnus glutinosa are unlikely to be useful as an index of nitrogen fixation, under most experimental conditions.

Abstract: Along the years, the word care has been a common one for those involved with nursing theory and practive; nevertheless, on our search for a beter understanding of that word, quite a number of questionings came up. On developing our work, we have selected three authors who have been dedicatingtheir efforts to the study of care/caring, and tried to present what those authors understand about such dyad, its goals, importance and components. Closing our study, a few questions are proposed, seeking to promote reflection among the nursing personnel.

Abstract: We study the one-dimensional totalistic rule 20 with five cells per neighborhood. We find two transients both characterized by finite correlation lengths. The first transient of about 100 time-steps terminates in the glider phase. Collisions of gliders determine the second transient of about 30,000 time-steps. The final state has a finite magnetization and is indistinguishable from class 2 behaviour.

TL;DR: The lipid content of pup liver and brain was similar to that of the control group, and the rate of lipogenesis in this gland was increased, which may be relevant to an adequate supply of lipid substrate to the pups.
Abstract: Ethanol intake during lactation causes growth deficiency and decreased plasma and liver protein content in pups. The lipid content of pup liver and brain was similar to that of the control group. Mammary gland protein content decreased, but the rate of lipogenesis in this gland was increased. This fact may be relevant to an adequate supply of lipid substrate to the pups.

TL;DR: The results suggest that the CE from C. dracaenoides exhibits a potent and long lasting antioedematogenic effect, has central depressant effects and potentiates noradrenaline‐induced contractile responses of the isolated rat vas deferens.
Abstract: Chemical analysis of Cordyline dracaenoides (Kunth) demonstrated the presence of steroidal saponins and anthocyanidins in the stem, rhizome and root. Small amounts of tannins were also detected in its stem and rhizome. Pharmacological analysis revealed different effects according to the part of the plant used. Crude aqueous/alcoholic extract (CE) from the rhizome inhibited carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema, while the CE obtained from the root significantly decreased the locomotor activity and potentiated barbiturate-induced hypnosis in mice. The CE from the roots inhibited noradrenaline-induced contraction in the rat vas deferens in a concentration-dependent and a noncompetitive manner, while the CE from the rhizome caused a parallel displacement to the left of noradrenaline concentration response curves. In the isolated rat stomach, the CE from the roots promoted a concentration-dependent displacement to the right of the serotonin concentration response curve allied to a marked inhibition of its maximal response, while the CE from the rhizome produced only an inhibition of about 40% of serotonin-contractile responses. These results suggest that the CE from C. dracaenoides exhibits a potent and long lasting antioedematogenic effect, has central depressant effects and potentiates noradrenaline-induced contractile responses of the isolated rat vas deferens. All these effects may be, at least in part, related to the presence of steroidal saponins in this plant.

TL;DR: The crude extract from M. velutina antagonized in a dose-dependent and reversible manner bradykinin (BK)- and lysyl-BK-induced contractions of the guinea-pig urinary bladder in vitro and inhibited both actions of the kinins.
Abstract: 1. 1. The crude extract (CE) from M. velutina (0.2–0.8 mg/ml), antagonized in a dose-dependent and reversible manner bradykinin (BK)- and lysyl-BK-induced contractions of the guinea-pig urinary bladder in vitro . 2. 2. Schild plots yielded nominal pA 2 values (as g/ml) of 3.5 and 3.7, but the slopes were significantly greater than unity. 3. 3. At concentrations 2–10-fold higher, the CE failed to affect responses to acetylcholine or histamine. 4. 4. In electrically-stimulated tissue, BK, L-BK and M-L-BK potentiated nerve-mediated twitch responses and increased muscular tone. The B 1 agonist [des-Arg 9 ]-BK, was inactive up to 10 μM. 5. 5. The CE from M. velutina (0.4 mg/ml) inhibited both actions of the kinins.

TL;DR: The behavioral effects of the calcium channel antagonists nifedipine, diltiazem and verapamil administered intraperitoneally alone or in combination with the CNS stimulant cocaine were investigated in rats using the open-field test and do not support the view that calcium antagonists can reverse the effects of psychostimulant drugs.
Abstract: The behavioral effects of the calcium channel antagonists nifedipine (10 mg/kg), diltiazem (10 mg/kg) and verapamil (10 mg/kg) administered intraperitoneally alone or in combination with the CNS stimulant cocaine (20 mg/kg) were investigated in rats using the open-field test. Calcium channel antagonists alone or combined with cocaine produced no significant effects on the number of rearings or number of ambulations. Cocaine injected alone significantly increased the frequency of ambulation. These data indicate that some calcium channel antagonists were not able to alter the behavioral effects induced by cocaine in rats in the open-field and thus do not support the view that calcium antagonists can reverse the effects of psychostimulant drugs.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a survey in the largest psychiatric hospital in the Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil, where they identified 171 patients with epilepsy (prevalence 152/1000), generalized tonic clonic attacks were the commonest seizure type and polytherapy was the standard treatment.
Abstract: Epilepsy was surveyed in the largest psychiatric hospital in the Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. This establishment was designed for one thousand long-term beds but at the time of the survey there were 1126 inpatients. Diagnosis ranged from anxiety neurosis to schizophrenia although patients with epilepsy, with or without psychiatric symptoms were also admitted. The following aspects were analyzed: prevalence of epilepsy, seizure types, antiepileptic drug treatment and psychiatric diagnosis. 171 patients with epilepsy were identified (prevalence 152/1000), generalized tonic clonic attacks were the commonest seizure type and polytherapy was the standard treatment. In at least 85 of the epileptic patients there was no reason for prolonged institutionalization in a psychiatric environment. Moreover, most of the sample were prescribed large amounts of sedative drugs. A multidisciplinary approach and outpatients services are urgently required to improve the prognosis and well-being of patients with epilepsy who are referred to psychiatric care.

Abstract: How far do the author's main concerns and beliefs dictate the narrative techniques she (he) adopts in her (his) novels? This is an intriguing question which, depending on the author, will probably require different answers. Relationally, and "a priori", one would think that there should be a strong relationship between form and content in a novel so as to make it an aesthetic, coherent whole. In what concerns Virginia Woolf's novels one notices, after a close analysis, that there is such a relationship between some of the ideas conveyed by her characters, in a significative number, and some of the narrative techniques she adopted. And this is what we shall be examining next.
