TL;DR: The leaf anatomy of 16 species belonging to three genera of the Malpighiaceae family found in the Cerrado (Minas Gerais State, Brazil) is described to support the generic delimitation by contributing to the identification of the species and constructing a dichotomous identification key that includes anatomical characters.
Abstract: This work describes the leaf anatomy of 16 species belonging to three genera of the Malpighiaceae family found in the Cerrado (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). The scope of this study was to support the generic delimitation by contributing to the identification of the species and constructing a dichotomous identification key that includes anatomical characters. The taxonomic characters that were considered to be the most important and used in the identification key for the studied Malpighiaceae species were as follows: the presence and location of glands; presence of phloem in the medullary region of the midrib; mesophyll type; presence and type of trichomes; and presence, quantity, and disposition of accessory bundles in the petiole. It was also possible to indicate promising characters for future taxonomic and phylogenetic studies in the Malpighiaceae family, especially for the Banisteriopsis, Byrsonima, and Heteropterys genera.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared two processes for the encapsulation of Lactobacillus acidophilus LA3 using alginate or a blend of Alginate-shellac as the wall material and sunflower oil as the core.
Abstract: This study aimed to compare two processes for the encapsulation of Lactobacillus acidophilus LA3 using alginate or a blend of alginate–shellac as the wall material and sunflower oil as the core. The particles were dried and stored for up to 60 days at 25 °C for stability studies, and the survival of the encapsulated probiotics in simulated gastrointestinal fluids was evaluated. The viability of the LA3 encapsulated by co-extrusion using alginate or a blend of alginate–shellac was, respectively, 6.2 and 7.2 log CFU/g (colony-forming units per gram), after 60 days of storage, while the viability of the LA3 encapsulated by extrusion was, respectively, 5.3 and 6.2 log CFU/g. The particles produced with the blend of alginate–shellac presented additional protection to the probiotics, as revealed by the increased survival rates in simulated gastrointestinal fluids. Taken together, these data provide a promising alternative for the incorporation of the probiotic L. acidophilus LA3 into new functional foods.

Abstract: The soil-geomorphic surface relationships were investigated in an area of the Central Brazilian Plateau, based upon a high intensity reconnaissance pedological survey, aiming at the prevision of the soil attributes and their distribution in adjacent areas which don't have pedological maps. Three geomorphic surfaces, with distinctive soil distribution patterns, were identified. In the highest geomorphic surface, the soil distribution is highly related to the hydric regime variation along the hillsides, occurring Red-Latosol (RL), Red-Yellow Latosol (RYL), Yellow Latosol (YL), Plinthic Yellow Latosol, Petroplinthic Yellow Latosol (PYL) (concretionary soil) and Haplic Plinthosol. These soils show very clayey texture, values of Fe2O3 and TiO2 relatively homogeneous, and Ki and Kr indexes indicatives of oxidic mineralogy. In the second surface, the soils show higher variation with respect to texture and iron and titanium contents. RL, Acricferric RL, RYL and YL are the dominant soils, with occurrence of Acriferric Endopetroplinthic RYL and YL near the borders of the high tablelands. In the third surface, that cuts the first and second ones, predominate less weathered soils, with high variable attributes, such as Haplic Cambisol, Red and Red-Yellow Argisols, Eutroferric Red Nitosol, Litholic Neosol and Fluvic Neosol. This work includes a proposition of a regional landscape evolution model.
