Abstract: CONTEXTUALIZACAO: A faixa etaria que mais cresce no Brasil e no mundo e a de idosos com 80 anos e mais. Entre esses individuos, a prevalencia de incapacidades e morbidades e maior que em outros grupos. OBJETIVOS: Investigar a influencia de fatores socioeconomicos, demograficos, biologicos e de saude, nutricionais, de relacoes sociais, alem da autoavaliacao da saude sobre a capacidade funcional de idosos longevos (80 anos e mais). METODOS: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, de base populacional, em que os dados foram obtidos por meio de questionarios e medidas antropometricas. A capacidade funcional foi avaliada utilizando-se o modelo desenvolvido por Andreotti e Okuma (1999). Foram realizadas analises univariada e multivariada. RESULTADOS: Os fatores independentes associados a pior capacidade funcional foram: ter 85 anos e mais (OR=2,91), ser do genero feminino (OR=6,09), fazer uso continuo de cinco ou mais medicamentos (OR=2,67), nao visitar parentes e/ou amigos pelo menos uma vez por semana (OR=11,91) e considerar a propria saude pior que a de seus pares (OR=4,40). CONCLUSOES: Os resultados sugerem que a capacidade funcional esta associada a uma complexa rede de fatores multidimensionais, sendo importante o desenvolvimento de acoes relacionadas aqueles fatores que sao passiveis de intervencao, visando propiciar melhores condicoes de saude e qualidade de vida a esses individuos.

Abstract: Many plant species produce mixtures of odorous and volatile compounds known as essential oils (EOs). These mixtures play important roles in Nature and have been utilized by mankind for different purposes, such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, aromatherapy, and food flavorants. There are more than 3000 EOs reported in the literature, with approximately 300 in commercial use, including the EOs from Eucalyptus species. Most EOs from Eucalyptus species are rich in monoterpenes and many have found applications in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, food flavorants, and perfumes. Such applications are related to their diverse biological and organoleptic properties. In this study, we review the latest information concerning the chemical composition and biological activities of EOs from different species of Eucalyptus. Among the 900 species and subspecies of the Eucalyptus genus, we examined 68 species. The studies associated with these species were conducted in 27 countries. We have focused on the antimicrobial, acaricidal, insecticidal and herbicidal activities, hoping that such information will contribute to the development of research in this field. It is also intended that the information described in this study can be useful in the rationalization of the use of Eucalyptus EOs as components for pharmaceutical and agrochemical applications as well as food preservatives and flavorants.

Abstract: Esta compilacao de samambaias e licofitas do Brasil e uma atualizacao daquela de 2010, no Catalogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. A metodologia consistiu na reuniao de dados de listas regionais, revisoes de grupos e bancos de dados selecionados. Especialistas convidados melhoraram a lista atraves do acesso a um sitio da web do Jardim Botânico do Rio Janeiro. Os resultados apontam uma diversidade de 1.253 especies, sendo 1.111 samambaias e 142 licofitas. Este numero e 6,5% maior que o anterior (1.176 especies). As especies endemicas decresceram de 38,2% para 36,7%. Foram reconhecidas 36 familias e 133 generos (vs. 33 familias, 121 generos em 2010). As dez familias mais diversas sao: Pteridaceae (196 especies), Dryopteridaceae (179), Polypodiaceae (164), Hymenophyllaceae (90), Thelypteridaceae (86), Aspleniaceae (78), Lycopodiaceae (64), Selaginellaceae (55), Anemiaceae (51) e Cyatheaceae (45). Os tres generos mais diversos continuam sendo Elaphoglossum (87 especies), Thelypteris (85) e Asplenium (74). O Dominio Fitogeografico mais rico continua sendo a Mata Atlântica (883 especies) e tambem com mais especies endemicas e ameacadas, seguido pela Amazonia (503 especies), Cerrado (269), Pantanal (30), Caatinga (26) e Pampa (oito). Minas Gerais permanece como o estado com maior riqueza (657 especies vs. 580 em 2010).
