TL;DR: A brief history of the study of tardigrades in Brazil and an updated species checklist of Brazilian tardigades is presented and a total of 100 species known from Brazil are listed.
Abstract: Tardigrades are microscopic animals, commonly referred to as “water bears”, and comprise the phylum Tardigrada. They are found in diverse habitats in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments worldwide. In this paper, it is presented a brief history of the study of tardigrades in Brazil and an updated species checklist of Brazilian tardigrades. Since the first report in 1913, the number of tardigrades records has increased, reflecting advances in the understanding the diversity of tardigrades in Brazil. A total of 100 species known from Brazil are listed, being 30 in marine and 70 in terrestrial and freshwater environments. The records are concentrated in Southeast (47.1%) and Northeast (41.3%) regions. Despite the advances, further research and sampling of new areas is still needed, besides reanalysis and confirmation of old records. Brazil, with its vast territory, extensive continental shelf and great diversity of biomes, has great potential to expand our knowledge of tardigrades fauna.

TL;DR: The surgery performed corrected altered passive eruption of the maxillary anterior teeth and lengthened the lateral beam of the elevator muscle of the upper lip and wing of the nose, and achieved containment with sutures, reducing the gingival smile.
Abstract: There are various alternatives for correcting a gingival smile, ranging from techniques such as gingivectomy to more complex and invasive procedures such as orthognathic surgery. Gingival smile is one of the most common complaints of patients seeking an aesthetic smile. This article describes the alternative treatments available for lip repositioning and improving smile aesthetics, and presents the clinical course of a gingival smile patient after undergoing the surgical technique of gingival recontouring (GR) associated with lip repositioning with restorative aesthetic treatment. The surgery performed corrected altered passive eruption of the maxillary anterior teeth and lengthened the lateral beam of the elevator muscle of the upper lip and wing of the nose, and achieved containment with sutures, reducing the gingival smile. After surgery, it was apparent that the high smile line had been successfully corrected without compromising labial harmony. The patient expressed high satisfaction with the treatment. The surgical technique proposed in this study may be a therapeutic option for lip repositioning to achieve smile harmony.

TL;DR: A female patient, with 67 years of age, presented mental confusion and visual acuity deficit, which evolved to periods of psychomotor agitation, which revealed an arteriovenous malformation compatible with cavernous angioma.
Abstract: Pineal cavernous angioma is a vascular malformation that has a prevalence lower than 1%. The etiology is debated. It is believed that it is originated from an autosomal dominant inheritance or from radiotherapeutic treatment. Complete resection enables the cure and prevents complications of the natural evolution of the lesion, mainly hemorrhagic events. A female patient, with 67 years of age, presented mental confusion and visual acuity deficit, which evolved to periods of psychomotor agitation. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the head showed a lobulated mass lesion in the pineal region with hypersignal on T1 and hyposignal on the susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) sequence. Hydrocephalus was also noticed. The patient underwent a microsurgery for complete lesion resection though a supracerebellar/supratentorial access. The anatomopathology revealed an arteriovenous malformation compatible with cavernous angioma. The pineal cavernous angioma is a rare malformation that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of expansive lesions of the pineal gland.

TL;DR: In this paper, a retrospective observational study was conducted Age, weight, height, body composition, blood count, serum iron, serum ferritin, serum transferrin and total iron binding capacity data were collected from the athletes' medical records in the months of January, May and August of 2015 and January of 2016.
Abstract: Introduction: Soccer players may experience hematological changes that could be detrimental to their health status In addition, inadequate body composition may impair performance Objective: To assess body composition and hematological changes over a year in soccer players Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted Age, weight, height, body composition, blood count, serum iron, serum ferritin, serum transferrin and total iron binding capacity data were collected from the athletes’ medical records in the months of January, May and August of 2015 and January of 2016 Body mass index was also calculated For the statistical analyses, the Anova and post-hoc Tukey’s post-hoc tests were used for the quantitative variables and the Chi-square test for the qualitative variables The significance level adopted was p<005 Results: Data were evaluated for 51 athletes with a mean age of 2353 ± 311 years, 7710 ± 656 kg, 180 ± 007 and 156 ± 289% body fat (BF) We observed significant (p<005) changes in mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, cell size and eosinophils during the period evaluated Among the athletes, 216% had decreased hematocrit levels and 39% had hemoglobin levels below the reference range A BF% greater than 16% was significantly related to serum iron depletion (p = 001) Conclusion: Small significant hematological changes during the competitive year were observed, but without significant changes in body composition Level of Evidence III; Study of nonconsecutive patients; without consistently applied reference ‘‘gold’’ standard

TL;DR: Surgical advancement of the mandible increases the size of the pharyngeal airway space in patients undergoing mandibular advancement through cephalometric tracing in pre and postoperative lateral radiographs.
Abstract: Aim: To evaluate the increase of pharyngeal airway space (PAS) in patients undergoing mandibular advancement. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed in thirteen patients who underwent mandibular advancement and were evaluated by cephalometric tracing in pre and postoperative lateral radiographs. In cephalometric tracing, the PAS was assessed by measuring the distance from the lower portion of the soft palate to the posterior pharyngeal wall (UP-PHW) and from the tongue base to the posterior pharyngeal wall (TB-PHW). Results: Patients’ age ranged from 22 to 42 years with an average of 28.54 ± 2.23 years. A preoperative mean of 9.20 ± 4.56 mm in the UP-PHW measure and 10.53 ± 5.84 mm in the TB-PHW measure were obtained. The mean values found for those measurements in the postoperative period were 11.61 mm and 13.95 mm, respectively. There was an average increase of 2.4 mm in the UP-PHW and of 2.95 mm in the TB-PHW. The mean mandibular advancement in evaluated patients was 5 mm. There was no statistical correlation between PAS increase and the amount of mandibular advancement for UP-PHW (p=0.058) and TB-PHW (p=0.53), as there was no such correlation either between PAS increase and the age of patients for UP-PHW (p=0.16) and TB-PHW (p=0.26). A greater effect of the retrolingual dimension in mandibular advancement was observed, with an average increase of 24.52% while in the retropalatal dimension an average increase of 20.75% was obtained. Conclusions: Surgical advancement of the mandible increases the size of the pharyngeal airway space.
