Disciplina coercitiva: relato de estudantes universitarios brasileiros

Abstract: Socialization strategies used by parents are part of a relevant and systematic current field of research. One of its main areas focuses on the use and consequences of coercive techniques used by parents, as recent data continues to indicate that these strategies are still very common today. The object of this study was to verify the prevalence of receiving coercive disciplinary practices by means of the retrospective accounts of differing university students in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. 400 participants answered a wide-ranging questionnaire investigating practices used by their parents when they were approximately ten years old; the instrument also analysed the student’s opinions about disciplinary practices they would have with their own children. The results show that the absolute majority of participants reported having been smacked and spanked by their mothers and fathers and there was positive and statistically significant correlation between receiving coercive discipline and the belief that such practices are efficacious in bringing up children. There was no significant difference between receiving coercive discipline and the marital situation of their parents, although participants whose parents were married reported that they thought such discipline was fairer, when compared to those whose parents were separated. A considerable percentage of participants reported having been beaten, both by their mothers and their fathers, with objects such as belts and brushes, but there is no data showing correlation between the use of these practices and the level of their parents’ education. The implications of the use of coercive techniques and corporal punishment are discussed and the relationships between parental behaviour and their children’s opinions about bringing up their own children are shown. Physical punishment is still much used currently and is a controversial subject owing to the fact of parents believing that how they bring up their children is their affair and they are not open to laws or rules dictated by others.

Anatomia de Rhipsalis subgênero Erythrorhipsalis A. Berger (Rhipsalideae, Cactaceae)

Abstract: The goal of the present study was the anatomical analysis of the species belonging to the subgenus Erythrorhipsalis aiming to identify diagnostic features and potential synapomorphies. Six out of the nine species were collected and processed for anatomical study. The species have uniseriate or multisseriate epidermis; parallelocytic stomata; collenchymatic hypodermis; chlorenchyma below hypodermis; mucilaginous cells, cortical bundles and druses are present in the cortex; the vascular cylinder is surrounded by a continuous layer of sclerenchyma external to the collapsed phloem; secondary phloem and xylem are present. Several features are informative for distinguishing species, with potential use in the group phylogeny. We highlight the shape of epidermal cells, the presence and arrangement of sclerenchyma in cortex and pith, the occurrence of mucilage secretory structures in the pith, and the disposition of unlignifi ed parenchyma in the secondary xylem.

Comparing methods to improve reliable sensor deployment time in continuous water quality monitoring

Abstract: Sensor fouling affects continuous water quality monitoring. Experiments were performed with probes for 10 months with copper guards; PVC guards coated with paint mixed with copper powder; and a water jet mechanism. Previous studies focused on the use of one antifouling method, using biocides such as copper and silver and mechanical cleaning, such as air jets, mostly on single parameter probes. The present work looks at multi-parameter probes and compares different antifouling options. Additional periods of reliability were verified with all alternatives. For the conductivity parameter, an additional period of up to 29 days (48%) with copper guards was observed, 26 days (43%) with water jets, and 37 days (61%) with copper powder paint mix. For dissolved oxygen, an additional period of up to 23 days (38%) was observed with copper guards, 29 days (48%) with water jets, and 60 days (100%) with copper powder paint mix. For pH, monitoring was reliable for 90 days (100%) with copper guards, and 60 days (67%) with copper powder paint mix. For turbidity, an additional period of up to 7 days (12%) was observed with copper guards, 3 days (5%) with water jets, and 57 days (95%) with copper powder paint mix.
