Single-port cholecystectomy in a patient with situs inversus totalis presenting with cholelithiasis: a case report

Abstract: Introduction: Situs inversus totalis (mirror image organs) is a rare condition and may affect the intra-abdominal viscera as well as the intrathoracic organs. Cholelithiasis is not more common in these conditions, but the diagnosis may be more difficult. Case presentation: We present the case of a 59-year-old African woman with gallstones and situs inversus totalis. A single-port cholecystectomy was performed using a single trocar access device (SITRACC). Conclusions: The procedure was uneventful, showing that this approach may be an option for this kind of surgery even in patients with situs inversus totalis.

Effect of Enamel and Dentin Surface Treatment on the Self-Adhesive Resin Cement Bond Strength.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of enamel and dentin surface treatment on the micro-shear bond strength of self-adhesive cement. Seventy-two extracted third molars had their crowns embedded in acrylic resin and worn to obtain a flat enamel or dentin surface. The enamel and dentin specimens were randomly assigned to 8 groups (n=12) that were based on surface treatment (11.5% polyacrylic acid solution or no treatment), substrate condition (wet or dry) and storage period (1 day or 90 days), and treated accordingly. Cylinders (1 × 1 mm) were fabricated using self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200) following the manufacturer's instructions. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for either 1 day or 90 days and subjected to micro-shear bond strength test (EMIC DL 2000 at 0.5 mm/min). After this, the failure type of the specimens was determined. Data were subjected to statistical analysis (a=0.05). According to the results, the 11.5% polyacrylic acid application decreased the bond strength in both enamel and dentin samples. The moist groups showed higher bond strength than the dry ones, regardless of the substrate and surface treatment. Storage period did not influence bond strength. In conclusion, surface treatment with 11.5% polyacrylic acid and absence of moisture decreased the bond strength of the resin-cement (RelyU200), regardless of the storage period.

Padrões de cooperação tecnológica entre setores na indústria brasileira: uma análise quantitativa dos dados da pintec 2001-2003

Abstract: O atual cenario contemporâneo atribui a cooperacao um papel de destaque no desenvolvimento de inovacoes, tornando relevante a analise das relacoes cooperativas nos diferentes setores industriais. A presente pesquisa buscou identificar padroes de cooperacao tecnologica existentes entre os diversos setores da industria brasileira, com base nos dados fornecidos pela Pesquisa Nacional de Inovacao Tecnologica 2001-2003 (Pintec). O estudo, de cunho descritivo e exploratorio, tem como foco de analise os setores industriais disponibilizados pela Classificacao Nacional de Atividades Economicas (CNAE), sendo o tratamento dos dados feito por meio da analise de cluster. Os resultados da pesquisa identificam a existencia de dois grupos distintos, com destaque para aquele com maior indice de cooperacao, a saber: fabricacao de produtos do fumo; refino de petroleo; produtos siderurgicos; fabricacao de maquinas para escritorio e equipamentos de informatica; fabricacao de aparelhos e equipamentos de comunicacoes. Nota-se uma diferenca significativa entre os grupos no que tange aos tipos de cooperacao estabelecidos e, de modo geral, verifica-se que, no Brasil, setores intensivos em producao tendem a possuir um indice mais significativo de cooperacao tecnologica.

Cranioplasty with three-dimensional customised mould for polymethylmethacrylate implant: a series of 16 consecutive patients with cost-effectiveness consideration

Abstract: Different methods of cranioplasty for the reconstruction of bony skull defects exist. In the absence of the autologous bone flap, a customised manufactured implant may be the optimal choice, but this implant has several limitations regarding its technical standardisation and better cost-effectiveness. This study presents a series of 16 consecutive patients who had undergone cranioplasty with customised three-dimensional (3D) template moulds for polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) implants manufactured after 3D modelling on a specific workstation. The virtual images were transformed into a two-piece physical model using a 3D printer for the biomaterials. PMMA implant was produced intraoperatively with the custom mould. Cosmetic results were analysed by comparing pre- and postoperative 3D computed tomography (CT) images and asking if the patient was satisfied with the result. The average total time for planning and production of customised mould was 10 days. The 16 patients were satisfied with the result, and CT images presented harmonious symmetry when comparing pre- and postoperative scans. Cases of postoperative infection, bleeding, or reoperation in this series were not observed. Cranioplasty with high-technology customised 3D moulds for PMMA implants can allow for an aesthetic reconstruction with a fast and cost-effective manufacturing process and possibly with low complication rates.
