Thermal and chemical characterization of Dicksonia sellowiana extract by means of thermal analysis

Abstract: Dicksonia sellowiana Hook., Dicksoniaceae, is a tree-fern which is being recently used in medicine mainly for its phytotherapic activities. While several other studies have focused on D. sellowiana extract characterization in terms of its biological and antioxidant activity, the novelty of this work aims to understand the fate of this extract during thermal disposal through thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry/mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis, to further characterize this plant's extract. Thermal analysis revealed mass loss within three well-defined steps, with the respective mass signals represented generated during heating. Light-volatiles were released during the first step, with release of NO2, CO2, and ethanol in the following, as a result of extract pyrolytic decomposition. Furthermore, mass signals variation during heating indicated the release of harmless by products in contrast to other pharmaceutical and personal care products. Finally, chemical characterization confirmed the observed under thermal analysis suggesting a highly polar structure within extract's composition.

Dengue fever in patients with multiple sclerosis taking fingolimod or natalizumab

Abstract: Dengue fever is the most prevalent mosquito-borne viral illness in humans. There may be different clinical manifestations of the disease, from mild symptoms to hemorrhagic forms of dengue fever and even neurological complications of this viral infection. Blood cells are usually affected, and thrombocytopenia is the hallmark of the disease. This paper presents 15 cases of dengue fever in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) taking fingolimod or natalizumab. There were no complications of dengue fever or worse outcomes of MS in these patients, and only four of them needed short-term treatment withdrawal due to lymphopenia.

Dentoalveolar Evaluation of Lower Incisors by CBCT after Treatment with Herbst Appliance

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the Herbst appliance on the proclination and protrusion of the lower incisors, and to verify if the device causes alveolar bone loss in the anterior region of the mandible. This is a retrospective study. The sample consisted of 35 individuals. The treatment group consisted of 22 individuals (8 girls and 14 boys; initial mean age of 8.2 years) who used the Cantilever Herbst appliance for a period of 12 months. The control group consisted of 13 individuals (3 girls and 10 boys; initial mean age of 8.9 years) who received no treatment and were followed up for a period of approximately 18 months. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were performed at the beginning and at the end of the observational period. The medullary bone thickness (MT), buccal cortical bone thickness (BCT), lingual cortical bone thickness (LCT), and lower incisors proclination and protrusion were evaluated. Data were submitted to statistical analysis (ANCOVA and Student's t-test) with a significance level of 5%. There was no significant difference in MT, BCT, LCT and incisor proclination between groups. Incisor proclination increased in the treated group with no statistical significance. The treatment group showed a significant increase in the protrusion of the incisors (p = 0.02). The Herbst appliance promoted a small proclination and protrusion of the lower incisors, without relevant clinical implications. The Herbst appliance did not cause bone loss in the anterior region of the mandible during Class II treatment.

Avaliação da Qualidade da Água do Ribeirão dos Müller, Curitiba-PR

Abstract: O Ribeirao dos Muller e afluente do Rio Barigui, situado a oeste do municipio de Curitiba — PR. Nasce em uma densa area populacional, composta de residencias e comercios, atravessa toda a extensao do Campus da Universidade Positivo e grande parte da cidade industrial de Curitiba, onde desagua no Rio Barigui. E formado por uma pequena bacia hidrografica com 10,29 km2 de area. Como muitos rios do municipio, o Ribeirao dos Muller vem passando por um processo de degradacao e ou poluicao, principalmente pela falta de infraestrutura de saneamento basico da regiao. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade das aguas do Ribeirao, no trecho em que corta a Universidade Positivo, e verificar se a situacao atual em que se encontra e compativel com a Classe 3, na qual foi enquadrado, segundo a portaria SUREHMA no 92 de 20 de setembro de 1992, artigo 1o, inciso VII. A avaliacao da qualidade das aguas do Ribeirao dos Muller foi feita por parâmetros fisico-quimicos e microbiologicos. Foram coletadas 24 amostras, entre fevereiro a agosto de 2007. Dentro do Campus da Universidade Positivo, o Ribeirao dos Muller apresenta um odor desagradavel e coloracao acinzentada, semelhante ao esgoto domestico. Os resultados indicaram baixa concentracao de Oxigenio Dissolvido (OD), com valores de 1,14 ± 0,94 mg.L-1, alta concentracao de materia orgânica (DQO), com valores igual a 250,82 ± 186,48 mg.L-1, e presenca de metais tracos como o chumbo (Pb), com valores igual a 1,55 ± 0,04 mg.L-1. Os resultados tambem mostraram altas concentracoes de coliformes totais (CT), 16 x 106 NMP.100 mL-1, coliformes termotolerantes, com 10 x 106 NMP.100 mL-1, com presenca de Escherichia coli em todas as amostras. Quais as principais características organizacionais das empresas dos diferentes segmentos da construção civil

Abstract: Neste artigo os autores se propoem a identificar os fatores que definem as principais caracteristicas organizacionais de empresas do subsetor da construcao civil, localizadas em Curitiba e regiao metropolitana, assim como verificar as diferencas existentes entre os cinco segmentos de atividade mais relevantes desse mercado: residencial, industrial e comercial, infraestrutura, servicos especializados e construcao industrializada. Para tanto, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa exploratoria e de natureza quantitativa, em nivel de mestrado. O metodo survey foi escolhido como procedimento principal para este estudo, permitindo a obtencao de dados primarios por meio da aplicacao de um questionario em um grupo de 118 empresas. Esse questionario procurou identificar o perfil da organizacao e as caracteristicas organizacionais das empresas avaliadas. Os dados foram analisados com a aplicacao de tecnicas multivariadas de analise fatorial e analise discriminante. A analise fatorial evidenciou as estrategias de melhoria, o comportamento do individuo no trabalho, a estrutura de funcionamento, a dinâmica de crescimento, o estilo de gestao, as relacoes interpessoais e o posicionamento da empresa perante o mercado como fatores determinantes. A analise discriminante apontou significativa homogeneidade no desenvolvimento organizacional das empresas que representam os diferentes segmentos de atividade.
