TL;DR: Low light intensity, in understory species, appears to be determinant of leaf morphology and anatomy differences, associated to high rainfall and relatively low temperature of the study area, both being the characteristics of this Atlantic Forest formation.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the leaf morphology of 57 tree species to determine if there is a dominant leaf pattern in a remnant of the Araucaria Forest, Curitiba, PR, Brazil that can be used as ecological indicator of this forest. We also determined the quantitative morphological and anatomical traits of all species, distributed in 4 different strata, to identify a dominant leaf type of each stratum, regarding light exposure. Thirty mature leaves were collected for each species and were classified morphologically. Leaf area and size, dry mass, specific leaf area, stomata density, total thickness of leaf blade, epidermis, palisade, and spongy parenchyma thickness were also analyzed. Leaves with entire margin, acuminate apex, and microphyllous were predominant among the studied species. All of them presented hypostomatic leaves, except Araucaria angustifolia. All 57 species presented thin leaves and high specific leaf area, indicating mesophyll, characteristic of rain forests as observed in studies in similar dense forests. Low light intensity, in understory species, appears to be determinant of leaf morphology and anatomy differences, associated to high rainfall and relatively low temperature of the study area, both being the characteristics of this Atlantic Forest formation. Considering the results, no specific leaf pattern for the Araucaria Forest was found. Only the lowest stratum showed more differences comparing with the others, and no specific leaf trait could be correlated to light exposure in the present study.

TL;DR: A conservative remodeling to improve the harmony of the smile was provided by combining direct composite resins and ceramics to improve smile esthetics.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to describe a restorative approach to the cosmetic remodeling of the teeth of a young adult patient with right maxillary lateral hypodontia and left lateral microdontia. A conservative restorative management was proposed to improve smile esthetics by combining direct composite resins and ceramics. Initially, periodontal therapy and dental bleaching were performed. Subsequently, direct composite resins were applied to the central incisors and canines to reestablish the sizes and shapes of these teeth. Finally, ceramics were placed on the implant and the microdontia to unite with the new alignment and color of the anterior teeth. Thus, conservative remodeling to improve the harmony of the smile was provided.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the behavior of the amido de feijao, a natural bio-polymer used in many industrial applications, mainly in the food sector.
Abstract Starch is an abundant carbohydrate in nature and can be extracted from several botanical sources. This natural bio-polymer has many industrial applications, mainly in the food sector. Beans are highly consumed and produced in Brazil, but there are many losses due to inadequate storage conditions. One option to reduce losses is to isolate the bean starch, which can then be applied in many technological processes. For that its behavior must be studied and known, by techniques that determine the paste property and the thermal degradation. TL;DR: It is found that keratoconus apex stability may be achieved 3 months after the procedure, and CXL promoted stabilization or improvement of keratometric values and visual acuity.
Abstract: Purpose: We aimed to report and analyze topographic and refractive outcomes following corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) in patients with progressive keratoconus (KC). Methods: We performed a retrospective, analytical, and observational study of 100 eyes from 74 progressive KC patients who underwent CXL at the Eye Hospital of Parana. Keratometric values were analyzed preoperatively as well as 3 and 12 months postoperatively. Results: For a total of 100 eyes, 68 belonged to male patients. The mean age of our study population was 19.9 ± 5.61 years. The average visual acuity and topographic parameters overall were stable after 1 year (p<0.05). After 3 months, steepest keratometry reading (K2) and maximum keratometry (Kmax) were significantly decreased (p<0.05). Regarding topographic astigmatism (dK), there was no significant difference between the 3-month and 12-month follow-ups. When we made comparisons between genders following CXL, there were no significant differences related to the changes in Kmax, K2, and spectacle-corrected distance visual acuity (SCDVA). Conclusions: CXL promoted stabilization or improvement of keratometric values and visual acuity. We found that keratoconus apex stability may be achieved 3 months after the procedure. There was no significant difference in keratometric and refractive values measured between male and female patients.

TL;DR: In this paper, the outcomes of balloon compression and microvascular decompression were evaluated in patients with trigeminal neuralgia and the post-procedural rate for pain relief and recurrence and associations between patient demographics and outcomes were analyzed.
Abstract: Background: About 50% of patients that suffer from trigeminal neuralgia do not experience sustained benefit from the use of oral medication. For their adequate management, a few surgical procedures are available. Of these, percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) and microvascular decompression (MD) are two of the most performed worldwide. In this retrospective study, we present the outcomes of these techniques through estimation of initial pain relief and subsequent recurrence rate. Methods: Thirty-seven patients with medically refractory trigeminal pain surgically treated at Hospital Cajuru, Curitiba, Brazil, with PBC, MD or both between 2013 and 2018 were enrolled into this retrospective study. The post-procedural rate for pain relief and recurrence and associations between patient demographics and outcomes were analyzed. Results: MD had an earlier recurrence time than balloon compression. Of the 37 patients, the mean age was 61.6 years, approximately one third were male and most had type I neuralgia. The most affected branch was the maxillary (V2). The time for recurrence after surgery was on average 11.8 months for PBC and 9.0 months for MD. Complications were seen only with microsurgery. Conclusions: MD presented with a more precocious recurrence of pain than PBC in this article. Moreover, it had a higher recurrence rate than described in the literature as well, which is possibly explained by the type of graft (muscle) that was used to separate the neurovascular structures.
