A risk reduction approach for academic research labs: A case study on naphthenic corrosion

Abstract: Academic research and development (R&D) labs are a significant part of academic life. But there can be physical, environmental, and experiment quality risks associated to this activity. Academic labs can present specific experiments, which have associated risks for researchers. Academic labs are also characterized by a high turnover of students and many of them are not fully aware of the level of physical and environmental risks of their activity. Accidents in academic labs with injuries and loss of life are facts that have to be tackled through risk management approaches. The objective of this paper is to present an integrated management approach, tackling risk management and analysis methods. HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) and PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) enabled, respectively, the analysis of safety and environmental risks. By quantifying the level of risk according to the type of experiment and the research context, it is possible to provide safety to the system. The resulting Digital Poka-Yoke – a mistake-proofing approach – has brought about the desired quality of results in experiments. The proposed approach was validated through a case study monitoring naphthenic corrosion experiments conducted by the Lab of Surface Electrochemistry and Corrosion (LSEC) at the Federal University of Parana (UFPR). As a consequence, this approach is currently in use at this lab.

Safety check list in outpatient surgery teaching

Abstract: This article proposes the use of a safe surgical checklist in the teaching of the discipline of Ambulatory Surgery during medical graduation. It discusses its benefits and potential implementation and adherence difficulties. It underscores the importance of developing a patient safety culture and active learning methodologies to train students for greater commitment and accountability with the quality of care provided to the community in the academic outpatient clinic of the school hospital.

Structural topology optimization as a teaching tool in the architecture

Abstract: The student of architecture with the basic knowledge of the disciplines of structural engineering can easily understand structural processes more technologically developed. The use of optimization starts from the understanding of how the structure behaves statically and aims to generate physical models that address structural criteria, such as supports and loads, and functional criteria, such as the type of material used, openings and solid areas. By knowing the variables required for optimization, the geometric shape of the structural element tends to change to an organic architecture configuration. Even with optimization processes presenting a lot of mathematical complexity, this paper approaches the essential stages for teaching the structural topological optimization in undergraduate architecture. Also, through examples, propose practical and simplified models that can be easily implemented in the classroom and in the professional life of the architect, conferring excellent results in terms of functionality and structurally efficient. To achieve these results, three software were used in free and educational versions, such as ForcePad, Topostruct and MIDAS NFX . The studies were applied in the structural design of a vertical building, a footbridge, a hammerhead bridge pier and a cantilevered building.

Viscossuplementação como tratamento das alterações internas da articulação temporomandibular: relato de casos

Abstract: JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: As formas de tratamento consideradas nao invasivas para as alteracoes internas das articulacoes temporomandibulares (ATM) descritas na literatura sao muitas, incluindo aconselhamento, farmacoterapia, fisioterapia e dispositivos interoclusais. No entanto, alguns pacientes tornam-se refratarios aos tratamentos conservadores, sendo indicados procedimentos como artrocentese, artroscopia e cirurgias das ATM. A viscossuplementacao e uma abordagem pouco invasiva, de baixo custo e com bons resultados em curto e medio prazo. O objetivo deste estudo foi discutir a tecnica de viscossuplementacao como tratamento das alteracoes internas da ATM, com relato de 2 casos clinicos com acompanhamento de 12 meses. RELATOS DOS CASOS: Duas pacientes com artralgia das ATM e refratarias a tratamento conservador foram submetidas a uma infiltracao semanal de hialuronato de sodio por tres semanas. Observou-se melhora da dor e da amplitude de abertura mandibular nas duas primeiras semanas, resultado que se manteve constante ao longo de um ano de acompanhamento. CONCLUSAO: A viscossuplementacao das ATM mostrou ser eficiente no controle da dor articular, melhorando tambem a funcao mandibular nos casos clinicos apresentados. Ensaios clinicos controlados com amostras significativas devem ser realizados para compreensao de sua real eficacia no tratamento das DTM.

Estado e expansão do ensino superior privado no Brasil: uma análise institucional dos anos de 1990

Abstract: Este artigo trata da expansao do ensino superior privado no Brasil, durante os anos de 1990, tendo como base as mudancas institucionais que envolveram o Estado no seculo XX, destacando sua crise nos anos de 1980, que culminaram na busca de um novo modelo na ultima decada analisada. Merece ser enfatizado que ainda nao ha clareza das relacoes Estado e Sociedade, mesmo em meados do seculo XXI, posto que possui menor numero de instrumentos de acao direta, nao obteve reducao significativa em seu tamanho, apresenta dificuldades nas operacoes regulatorias, mas mantem razoavel interesse em se constituir como Estado de Bem-Estar. Nesse contexto, torna-se mais facil o entendimento da expansao em voga, na medida em que se trata de um aspecto da mudanca e nao de um fenomeno isolado. Quanto a metodologia, foram realizadas 32 entrevistas semiestruturadas e analise autores que abordaram o assunto, cujas principais conclusoes estao apresentadas no final do texto.
