TL;DR: In this article, the authors used magnetically modified geopolymer materials as an oil remover from water with a magnet's aid, obtaining an average intrinsic oil removal capability (IORC) of 150 g/g.
Abstract: Environmental impacts are increasingly due to the human polluting activities. Therefore, there is a need to develop technologies capable of removing contamination and driving the impacted environment as close as possible to its inherent characteristics. One of the major problems still faced is the spill of oil into water. Therefore, to solve the environmental problem, this work shows the use of magnetically modified geopolymer materials as an oil remover from water with a magnet’s aid. The results obtained were outstanding since the average intrinsic oil removal capability (IORC) was 150 g/g. The presented IORC is the largest found in the materials produced by our research group, constituting an extremely encouraging result, mainly because of the ease of preparing the magnetic geopolymer system. Furthermore, the low cost of production and the material’s capability to be reused as filler of polymer or even cementitious matrices allows us to project that this nanocomposite can be widely used, constituting an economically viable alternative for more efficient environmental recovery processes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparison of thermal-oxidative vulcanized SBR degradation caused by Ultraviolet (UV) or Microwave (MW) irradiations is reported.
Abstract: This study reports a comparison of thermal-oxidative vulcanized SBR degradation caused by Ultraviolet (UV) or Microwave (MW) irradiations. The surface modifications of the rubber samples were explored by instrumental techniques. The cross-linking degree of the rubber was determined via leaching method and the contact angles with water were measured at room temperature. By increasing the exposure time, the UV-treated v-SBR kept 83.24, 62.65, 39.86 and 33.32% of crosslinks, while the MW-treated samples kept 94.78, 88.85, 86.98 and 80.40%. Besides that, the contact angle was decreased drastically after the UV treatment registering 83.70°, 52.45°, 34.75°, 6.0°, while the MW-treated samples had no significant change in the contact angles values. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) findings indicate that part of the polymeric chain was altered through C–C and C-S bond scissions (softening mechanism) calling the attention to a degradation beside the devulcanization phenomenon (regeneration), corroborated by the total carbon and sulfur mass balance. Assuming that the same energy is applied, the UV irradiation present a very strong regeneration effect comparing to MW irradiations. The results are promising, highlighting UV irradiations as a very strong regeneration tool of rubber which is considered a beneficial for the rubber residue problem facilitating its insertion in new composites.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the efficacy of four decellularization protocols, that varied according to the temperature of tissue storage and the sequence of chemical reagents, to decellule murine skeletal muscles.
Abstract: Volumetric muscle loss causes functional weakness and is often treated with muscle grafts or implant of biomaterials. Extracellular matrices, obtained through tissue decellularization, have been widely used as biological biomaterials in tissue engineering. Optimal decellularization method varies among tissues and have significant impact on the quality of the matrix. This study aimed at comparing the efficacy of four protocols, that varied according to the temperature of tissue storage and the sequence of chemical reagents, to decellularize murine skeletal muscles. Tibialis anterior muscles were harvested from rats and were frozen at -20°C or stored at room temperature, followed by decellularization in solutions containing EDTA + Tris, SDS and Triton X-100, applied in different sequences. Samples were analyzed for macroscopic aspects, cell removal, decrease of DNA content, preservation of proteins and three-dimensional structure of the matrices. Processing protocols that started with incubation in SDS solution optimized removal of cells and DNA content and preserved the matrix ultrastructure and composition, compared to those that were initiated with EDTA + Tris. Freezing the samples before decellularization favored cell removal, regardless of the sequence of chemical reagents. Thus, to freeze skeletal muscles and to start decellularization with 1% SDS solution showed the best results.

EnglishIntroduction: karate is a millennial martial art, currently inserted in the context of Olympic Combat Sports. However, important scientific gaps still persist in monitoring high-performance athletes, including the basal metabolism measurement of female karate athletes. Aim: to contribute to understanding the applicability of equations for predicting basal metabolic rate in this population. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study with a retro-analytical component, in which data were obtained from the medical records of seven athletes participating in the project “Karate Sao Paulo Olimpico” (Sao Paulo Olympic Karate) (KSPO) during their nutrition counseling, including body composition and indirect calorimetry testing, with the aim of comparing these data to basal metabolic rate prediction equations. Results: only one out of the five evaluated equations did not have a significant statistical difference relative to the value obtained by open-circuit indirect calorimetry. Conclusion: in case basal metabolism cannot be measured through standard methodology (calorimetry), Cunningham’s prediction equation (1980) would be appropriate to obtain total energy expenditure for high-performance female karate athletes.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of AGE-albumin on cholesterol efflux and inflammatory cytokine secretion in macrophages was evaluated. And the authors concluded that AGE has a persistent deleterious effect on macrophage lipid homeostasis and inflammation.
Abstract: Advanced glycated albumin (AGE-albumin) impairs cholesterol efflux and contributes to inflammation in macrophages. The current study evaluated: (1) the persistence of the deleterious effect of AGE-albumin in cholesterol efflux and in inflammation, and (2) how metabolic control in diabetes mellitus (DM) contributes to attenuate the deleterious role of AGE-albumin in macrophage cholesterol homeostasis. Methods: AGE-albumin was produced in vitro or isolated from uncontrolled DM subjects’ serum before (bGC) and after improved glycemic control (aGC). Albumin samples were incubated with bone marrow-derived macrophages and 14C-cholesterol efflux or LPS- induced cytokine secretion were determined immediately, or after cell resting in culture media alone. The ABCA-1 degradation rate was determined after cell incubation with cycloheximide, and ABCA1 protein level by immunoblot. Oil Red O staining was used to assess intracellular lipid accumulation. Results: A persistent effect of AGE-albumin was observed in macrophages in terms of the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and reduced cholesterol efflux. HDL-mediated 14C-cholesterol efflux was at least two times higher in macrophages treated with aCG-albumin as compared to bGC-albumin, and intracellular lipid content was significantly reduced in aGC-albumin-treated cells. As compared to bGC-albumin, the ABCA-1 protein content in whole cell bulk was 94% higher in aCG-albumin. A 20% increased ABCA-1 decay rate was observed in macrophages treated with albumin from poorly controlled DM. AGE-albumin has a persistent deleterious effect on macrophage lipid homeostasis and inflammation. The reduction of AGEs in albumin ameliorates cholesterol efflux.

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the effects of whole body electrostimulation (WB-EMS) with body weight training on functional fitness and body composition of older men. Methods: Twenty physically inactive older men were randomized into: Control group (control), performed the body weight exercise training wearing electrostimulation clothing, but without receiving electrical current stimuli (n = 10), and body weight associated with whole body electrostimulation group (BW+WB-EMS), performed the body weight exercise training wearing electrostimulation clothing plus whole body electrostimulation (n = 10). The training sessions were performed twice a week for 6 weeks and included eight exercises using body weight, performed in two sets of eight repetitions. Physical function was assessed using a battery composed of seven tests, six derived from the Senior fitness test and a handgrip strength test. We also measured the muscle thickness (MT) of the biceps and triceps brachii and vastus lateralis. Results: The BW+WB-EMS group presented increased (p < 0.05) performance in the 30-s chair stand test (10.2 ± 3.3 vs. 13.8 ± 5.0 reps), arm curl (16.6 ± 3.9 vs. 19.9 ± 6.1 reps), 6-min walk test (402 ± 96 vs. 500 ± 104 m), and handgrip strength test (30 ± 11 vs. 32 ± 11 kgf). The BW+WB-EMS group also presented increased MT (p < 0.05) in the biceps brachii (17.7 ± 3.0 vs. 21.4 ± 3.4 mm), triceps brachial (14.7 ± 3.6 vs. 17.5 ± 4.1 mm), and vastus lateralis muscles (15.1 ± 2.6 vs. 18.6 ± 4.3 mm). Moderate correlations were found in arm curl (p = 0.011, r = 0.552) but not handgrip strength (p = 0.053, r = 0.439) with changes in the biceps MT. Moderate changes in the 6-min walk distance were significantly correlated with changes in vastus lateralis MT (p = 0.036, r = 0.471). There was a moderate correlation between the changes in the 30-s chair stand test (p = 0.006, r = 0.589) and changes in the vastus lateralis MT. Furthermore, although a moderate correlation (r = 0.438) was found between triceps MT and handgrip strength no significant difference (p = 0.053) was reported. Additionally, there were no statistical differences in any parameters for the control group. Conclusion: WB-EMS with body weight training increased functional fitness and MT in physically inactive older men.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of watching TV on global cognitive function, immediate memory, verbal fluency, risk of dementia of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) in a cohort of older adults residents of socioeconomically deprived areas of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Abstract: Watching TV is a highly prevalent leisure activity among older adults and, in many cases, the only leisure option of those living in low-income communities. While engaging in leisure activities have proven to protect older adults from cognitive decline, the effects of watching TV on cognition of this population is controversial in the literature. This study investigated the impact of watching TV on global cognitive function, immediate memory, verbal fluency, risk of dementia of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) in a cohort of older adults residents of socioeconomically deprived areas of Sao Paulo, Brazil. We used data from the Sao Paulo Aging & Health Study (SPAH). Participants aged 65 years or over, with no dementia diagnosis at baseline and who completed the 2-year follow-up assessment were included in this study (n = 1,243). Multivariable linear regression models were performed to assess the effect of watching TV on global cognitive function, immediate memory and verbal fluency. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate the risk of developing dementia and aMCI. Models were controlled by cognitive performance at baseline, sociodemographic characteristics and functional status. Cognitive performance at baseline and follow-up were similar. Thirty-one participants were diagnosed with dementia, and 23 with aMCI 24 months after inclusion in the study. Watching TV did not show any positive or negative effect on global cognitive function, immediate memory, verbal fluency, risk of dementia and risk of aMCI. It is good news that watching TV did not predict the decline in cognition in elders. However, it is essential to increase opportunities for other leisure activities for low-income and low-educated older adults if we do consider that leisure activities protect cognition decline in older adults. In the coming decades, developing countries will experience the highest burden of dementia and more than fun, public policies to promote leisure activities might be a strategy to alleviate this burden shortly.

TL;DR: In this article, a literature review was carried out to propose a set of indicators capable of assessing the overall impact of this eco-innovation in eight lines of action: (1) environmental, (2) social, (3) economic, (4) human resource training, (5) institutional development, introduction of innovation, (6) unwanted occurrences, and (8) characteristics of environmental management.
Abstract: Eco-innovations are innovations capable of helping to reduce the environmental impacts of production processes. In this sense, the adoption of models that assess comprehensively, in an integrated manner and in different perspectives, the general performance of these innovations allows managers to guide their decisions. The object of this research is the use of an eco-innovation in the production processes of cassava, where the waste generated is treated by biodigesters. These cassava processing industries are located in southern Brazil, Parana State, comprising a multiple case study. A literature review was also carried out to propose a set of indicators capable of assessing the overall impact of this eco-innovation in eight lines of action: (1) environmental, (2) social, (3) economic, (4) human resource training, (5) institutional development, (6) introduction of innovation, (7) unwanted occurrences, and (8) characteristics of environmental management. To compile and process the data, the computerized model INOVA-tec System was used. The objective was to employ the INOVA-tec System model as an instrument for evaluating eco-innovative processes in leading companies in its segment, looking for evidence to expand its usability to other realities in the agro-industry. The results show that the technology scenario is favorable to its dissemination; however, the low performance of the indicators together makes it underutilized.

Abstract: In addition to the contemporary challenges related to student motivation and the adaptation of methodologies and strategies to the digital world, the recent pandemic of COVID-19 and its consequent social isolation brought new implications to education: the impossibility of face-to-face classes highlighted the need to rethink distance learning and digital teaching techniques. Within this context, a gamified training was developed, aiming at providing fast and accessible training in digital methods and languages for teachers nationwide. The focus of the present work was to expose, from the point of view of education professionals, the evaluation of the created tool. The data obtained from this research demonstrated a rate of retention of participants that is around twice the national average for distance learning in general. Additionally, the analysis of feedback from participants who concluded the training indicates a strong preference for gamified training over traditional online training, mainly due to factors such as entertainment, interactivity and innovation in learning techniques.

TL;DR: Improvements in maximum strength and muscle thickness are similar when repetition volumes are equalized through the number of series and repetitions, after general statistical analyses for all protocols.
Abstract: Introduction There are few studies on the effectiveness of training models with high volume sets per session in particular muscle groups. Objective The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of different resistance training (RT) repetitions with equalized volumes on muscle adaptations. Methods This study used an experimental design in which forty-seven volunteers underwent 8 weeks of RT after having been distributed randomly into three groups: ten sets of three maximum repetitions (10x3), three sets of ten maximum repetitions (3x10) and five sets of six maximum repetitions (5x6) for each muscular group per training session. Maximum strength (1RM test) and muscle thickness (MT) were evaluated as outcomes. Results A significant main effect (p=0.001) of time on maximum strength was observed for the three groups, but no significance was observed (p>0.05) in time x group interactions. A significant main effect (p=0.001) of time was observed on MT for biceps, triceps and vastus lateralis, without significant differences for time x group interactions. Significant correlations were found between maximum strength and muscle thickness after general statistical analyses for all protocols. Conclusion Improvements in maximum strength and muscle thickness are similar when repetition volumes are equalized through the number of series and repetitions. Abstract: This article aims to reflect on the different nuances that Brazilian design can take in the face of decolonial narratives, which break with universal ideals for others based on the pluriverse (ESCOBAR 2016). We seek to understand the hegemonic position of the discipline to question its dominant place in the light of theories that elucidate the coloniality of power (QUIJANO, 2000). Through two lines of thought – border thought, which theorizes from the epistemic frontiers, and intersectional thought, which looks to the voids in the intersection of categories of race, gender, class and work – we raise theoretical and practical reflections that guide practitioners towards an attitude aligned with decolonial thought. The article is divided into three parts: (1) the relations between modernity and coloniality applied to the Brazilian context; (2) Brazilian design analyzed through border and intersectional thoughts; and (3) theoretical and practical reflections for the construction of a decolonial perspective for a pluriversal design. Based on these points, we address alternative paths to Brazilian design, which is based on emancipatory practices that guide the autonomy and freedom of subjectivities
