TL;DR: Based on a CGM/BSP parallel algorithm for computing the transitive closure of an acyclic directed graph (digraph), a modified version that works for any digraph and does not use the linear extension labeling is presented.
Abstract: Based on a CGM/BSP parallel algorithm for computing the transitive closure of an acyclic directed graph (digraph), we present a modified version that works for any digraph and show very promising implementation results. The original CGM/BSP algorithm for acyclic digraphs uses a linear extension labeling of the vertices. With this labeling, the original algorithm can be shown to require log p + 1 communication rounds, where p is the number of processors. The modified CGM/BSP algorithm works for any digraph and does not use the linear extension labeling. In theory the modified version no longer guarantees the O(log p) bound on the number of communication rounds, as shown by an artificially elaborated example that requires more than log p + 1 communication rounds. In practice, however, all the graphs tested use at most log p + 1 communication rounds. The implementation results are very promising and show the efficiency and scalability of the proposed modified algorithm, and compare favorably with other parallel implementations.

TL;DR: Investigating the effects of intravenous injection of oxytocin (OT) on the urinary bladder in sham and ovariectomized rats and the topical action of OT on intravesical pressure (IP) suggest that intravenous Oxytocin decreases IP due to bladder relaxation and OT has local bladder effect, binding directly in receptors located in the bladder.
Abstract: Urinary bladder dysfunction affects several people worldwide and shows higher prevalence in women. Micturition is dependent on the Barrington's nucleus, pontine urine storage center and periaqueductal gray matter, but other brain stem areas are involved in the bladder regulation. Neurons in the medulla oblongata send projections to hypothalamic nuclei as the supraoptic nucleus, which synthetizes oxytocin and in its turn, this peptide is released in the circulation. We investigated the effects of intravenous injection of oxytocin (OT) on the urinary bladder in sham and ovariectomized rats. We also evaluated the topical (in situ) action of OT on intravesical pressure (IP) as well as the existence of oxytocin receptors in the urinary bladder. In sham female Wistar rats, anesthetized with isoflurane, intravenous infusion of OT (10 ng/kg) significantly decreased the IP (-47.5 ± 1.2%) compared to saline (3.4 ± 0.7%). Similar effect in IP was observed in ovariectomized rats after i.v. OT (-41.9 ± 2.9%) compared to saline (0.5 ± 0.6%). Topical administration (in situ) of 0.1 mL of OT (1.0 ng/mL) significantly reduced the IP (22.3.0 ± 0.6%) compared to saline (0.9 ± 0.7%). We also found by qPCR that the gene expression of oxytocin receptor is present in this tissue. Blockade of oxytocin receptors significantly attenuated the reduction in IP evoked by oxytocin i.v. or in situ. Therefore, the findings suggest that (1) intravenous oxytocin decreases IP due to bladder relaxation and (2) OT has local bladder effect, binding directly in receptors located in the bladder.

TL;DR: There was a positive association between malalignment of the knees, body mass index and physical fitness among schoolchildren and a significant positive association in both sexes.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between malalignment of the knees (genu valgum) and variables of physical fitness among schoolchildren. METHODS: We analyzed data collected between the years 2000 to 2009. The sample comprised 1,141 schoolchildren of both sexes aged 06 to 18 years. To participate in the research, the students must meet the following criteria: age between 6 and 18 years and a full assessment of physical fitness, including measurement of genu valgus in at least one of the semester assessments. Postural evaluation (valgus) was determined by the intermalleolar distance, in centimeter. Body Mass Index (BMI) determined through the growth curves of the World Health Organization. Physical fitness variables (strength of upper and lower limbs, agility, speed and flexibility), were taken according to CELAFISCS standardization. RESULTS: Among male students it was found a prevalence of 23.2% obese, 44.4% overweight and 32.4% eutrophic. Among females, the values were: 30.9% obese, overweight 39.5% and 20.6% eutrophic. When analyzing the prevalence of valgus according to the BMI classifications it was, found a significant positive association in both sexes. Association was found between genu valgum and upper limbs strength only in crude analysis. The other variables, agility, speed and flexibility were not associated even when the analysis was adjusted. CONCLUSION: there was a positive association between malalignment of the knees, body mass index and physical fitness among schoolchildren.

11 Aug 2006TL;DR: In this paper, the degree of satisfaction of the students of the course of an accounting course at an institution of higher education in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was evaluated by means of a research of field carried out with students of a referred course.
Abstract: This article had for objective show up the degree of
satisfaction of the students of the course of
Accounting of an private Institution of Upper
Education – IUE native of Sao Paulo, facing the
present demands of the Ministery of Education and
Culture – MEC and of the market of work. In
principle, was contextualized itself the need of
improvement of the quality of the inherent, upper
education to the service of the needs of his clients
(the students), that is a differential in the search of
competitive advantage in the educational segment.
By means of a research of field carried out with
students of him referred course in the year of 2004, in
an IUE private of the city of Sao Paulo, identified
itself the partner-demographic profile of the
students, the expectations of them as regards his
career and education continued, as well like hurried
its degree of satisfaction, based in the evaluation of
the students, regarding the knowledge as well as
regarding the composition of the curriculum and
distribution of the workload of the disciplines. Aiming
at to the improvement of the quality of the educationlearning,
the students woven critics and
suggestions, that showed up the factors critics for

24 Apr 2018TL;DR: The inspiration came from a sea lamprey in order to create a closed structure soft robotic gripper, which involves the object as whole, a homogeneous force is applied on it.
Abstract: This work describes a new kind of soft gripper. Inspiration on nature is usual in Soft Robotics device creation. In this case, the inspiration came from a sea lamprey in order to create a closed structure soft robotic gripper. Usually the grippers have one or more soft actuators that act like fingers. Since it is difficult to know whether the fingers are really grasping an object, it is being proposed a closed structure to deal with this problem. While the proposed gripper involves the object as whole, a homogeneous force is applied on it. In addition to the details of the closed structure actuator manufacture description, two procedure tests are presented: an analysis of load versus pressure function and of the force versus pressure characteristics. At the end, some new research topics to the proposed soft gripper are discussed.
